tall rant about a customers “concerns” (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by bedusseyy
(sorry for any formatting issues i’m mobile)
had a man give me attitude today for...touching his cups. he pulled up to window, and i was covering for a barista on a ten but also helping my bar person with fraps, and coincidentally made his fraps. i go to hand them to him in our little hand off container, and:

customer: did you touch the cups?

me: i mean...yeah i had to touch them to make your drinks?

customer: well were you wearing gloves???

me: no, we’re washing our hands, it’s not efficient to wear gloves as i’d have to change them after touching anything

he grudgingly took the drinks and sped off. i just - if you’re that concerned about contamination why are you even coming to starbucks????? did you really need your mocha cookie crumble and mocha frap that badly? just fucking stay home instead of going out and giving attitude to someone that doesn’t have the luxury of being able to choose to stay home
sadbrockboy 111 points 3y ago
i dont even see how gloves would have made this any better..
littleedge 56 points 3y ago
There is a misunderstanding of public health amongst the vast majority of the population, and an overload of readily available information (real or fake) so nobody knows what to believe and how the world works.

Then you have people like OP’s customer who is simply whack.
submitizenkane 15 points 3y ago
They wouldn’t, gloves can be just as dirty, if not dirtier than hands
CrystalizedCage 15 points 3y ago
Anytime I see someone wearing gloves I assume they’re dirtier than bare hands. Gloves are more to protect the individual wearing them than anyone else
lilBalzac 12 points 3y ago
Gloves on baristas would be far less effective at infection control, far slower due to repeated glove changes, and impossible to implement without massive increases in the global glove supply. But Karen and Steven know best, right?
sass_mouth39 3 points 3y ago
I absolutely agree with you but I had to giggle because Karen and Steven are the names of 2/3 people who host and direct my favorite podcast lol
norewichhea 47 points 3y ago
I had a regular come through and yell at my 16 yo barista about how he’s a doctor and he has a friend who is the same age as her, and shes gonna die. Just because she wasn’t wearing gloves. addition- we can do without his 2 venti 7 scoop non fat no foam extra hot matchas everyday.
DogmaticHappiness 26 points 3y ago
Regulars are the wildest of the customers istg.

A grown ass man got mad at me yesterday because I unwrapped his cookie to put it in a pasty bag. MIND YOU only the tongs touched the cookie. I had it to him and he responded with “why would you unwrap that???”

“Well sir that’s how we serve our food, (unwrapped and in a pasty bag) but I can give you one still wrapped if you’d prefer”

“No it’s FINE I just think that with everything going on you should change how you’re doing things here”

And he stormed out, like, my dude, my hands are fucking raw and nearly bleeding from washing them 20+ times in an eight hour shift. If you’re so god damned concerned about you’re stupid cookie then maybe ask what kind of precautions were taking to ensure people’s safety OR JUST DONT COME TO STARBUCKS.

Sorry rant over.

OR JUST ASK FOR IT IN THE PLASTIC!!! sheesh, some people
they-were-roomates 18 points 3y ago
I KNOW RIGHT, the thing that bothers me most about it is that I offered him on in the plastic and HE DECLINED AND KEPT COMPLAINING. I just don’t get people right now man.
narviat 14 points 3y ago
honestly i just open the package and drop it right in the bag, no contact with tongs or hands, unless it needs to be warmed of course
sass_mouth39 2 points 3y ago
It’s not like that is an uncommon or unheard of request either. Smh
narviat 3 points 3y ago
right?! it makes my job easier when they want it in plastic, less work for me, and less waste
i-am-lizard-queen 26 points 3y ago
Not glove related, but we had this older guy come in. He ordered an Americano and wanted room. When the front person told him that we would have to pour his cream for him or give it to him in another cup as opposed to having a carafe out, he got pissed off and stormed out.
Darebear52 19 points 3y ago
😤 to get that upset over hot water and shots! Some people these days!
PossibleWishbone1 14 points 3y ago
I only wear gloves when I’m doing handoff (i live in nyc and drive through stores are non existent here unless you go upstate)

Anyway, I only wear gloves at handoff because customers love to gently caress my hand as their grabbing their drinks. Unintentional or not, it fuels my anxiety. Other than that, I agree it wouldn’t make sense to wear gloves as it makes the drink making process harder and gloves carry loads of contamination. He should have sat this one out and stayed home.
Koalastars009 7 points 3y ago
A lot of dudes in my city like to make a complaint as a “joke” and get mad when you don’t play into it or get mad back. One trick I do is play dumb and pretend you don’t understand what they’re talking about. Do your best to shrug off these bad customers. It’s not worth the anxiety that comes with it.

Did you wash your hands between DTR and bar? Well there you go. Same as changing gloves.. And I mean they obviously had different expectations of what Sbux would be doing to operate as safely as possible and under that ignorance decided to go there.
SandHanitizerrrr 1 points 3y ago
I've seen a woman spray her cups and her child's ACTUAL CAKE POP with Lysol before driving away. I was actually speechless
bedusseyy [OP] 2 points 3y ago
sounds like she took drumps advice to ingest bleach literally
itsalatte 1 points 3y ago
I completely agree with you and I think that how you worded it was perfect. There are so many other people coming through that drive-through of yours that appreciate you being there and making their coffee. Providing them with something daily that makes their lives feel a little bit more normal. Everyone in this country is facing different issues with this pandemic, and some of them forgot their manners, unfortunately. But just know, for every single one of those customers, there are so many others that thank you!

I get that being upset about touching the cups is stupid, but isn't current protocol that the window/handoff partner should not be making drinks or putting lids on? It's a planted position and yeah people at my store flex positions but at the very least DTR should not be making drinks.

Edit: lids, not kids.
bedusseyy [OP] 8 points 3y ago
i was the shift on and trying to make sure my minors got the breaks that they needed within a timely frame, we were short handed because of this and i did what i had to do, it’s not something that happens all the time, it was a situation in which i was the most experienced bar partner on the floor other than my other ssv on bar, and she was getting backed up so i helped make these two fraps and then went back to window
WholesomeOnliPls 1 points 3y ago
Yeah that's understandable. Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do. It's definitely frustrating for me when I'm on window and the bar partner is backed up and I can't touch any unfinished drinks whereas before COVID I would have been all over cold bar to help. At my store it's a pretty strict expectation right now to not jump in even if bar is backed up, but I also know every store does things differently and I'm not a shift so I've never been in your position. We also don't have many minors at my store. Shit's tough.
qwasyas 3 points 3y ago
In a beautiful world DTR is a planted position. But if every starbucks is like mine with only five ppl on a team, 30 cars wrapped around DT, 25 customers at the front door demanding to be let in, and all of my partners wanting to drop dead. It usually isn’t possible.
phat_pheasant 3 points 3y ago
when i do slide off window to make a drink, its slow, one drink, and i wash my hands right after and hand sanitizer as well. None of us are perfect, just trying our best
