Face mask (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by brokenlatteart
I’m literally so tired of wearing the black and even the surgical face masks during work. And if Starbucks isn’t going to continue are $3 pay then what’s the point. I mean they’re not requiring people who come in to wear mask or people who come up to the drive thru. The extra $3 was supposed to compensate for everything going on but if we’re not getting that than I don’t see the point. And if customers are so worried they’re gonna get something from us cause we’re not wearing mask than they can just make coffee at home.

Starbucks and every other company have collectively decided that they’ve had their fun with helping people and now it’s time to make money again.
AinslieSt 70 points 3y ago
As though they ever stopped making money.
kyle_shrewz -55 points 3y ago
Well they were likely spending more than they were making
miniinovaa 25 points 3y ago
My store hit an all time high on sale. So gtfo with that
kyle_shrewz -11 points 3y ago

Get outa here with your logic, this is Reddit, big companies bad.
2275921 -51 points 3y ago
If they can't make money they can not pay us.

Right now many stores are not profitable, as nice as an extra $3/hour is, I don't want Starbucks going bankrupt trying to be over the top nice to us. Seems you understand that though. :)
chinfox 43 points 3y ago
Kevin Johnson’s making $19 M a year. this is not a matter of starbucks breaking the bank on an extra $3 an hour, they simply only act like they care about our wellbeing for brownie points.
rachelsmall 8 points 3y ago
Let’s stop calling it an extra three dollars and just admit it’s a liveable wage.
overshoulderboulder 1 points 3y ago
I thought you had a really good job? You're sweating on $3 now?

factsss

the mask isn’t to protect the person wearing it, it’s to protect whoever comes in contact with the mask-wearer

so me wearing a mask means the customer is safe

sbux could give no fucks about us, the mask wearers

The only thing I’ll miss about the masks is that I don’t have to smile.
brokenlatteart [OP] 59 points 3y ago
My manager “smile with your eyes” like okay Tyra calm down
alh1st 29 points 3y ago
Honestly your manager needs to fuck off.
brokenlatteart [OP] 9 points 3y ago
LOL
MonstrousGiggling 6 points 3y ago
Did she seriously say this?

Smiling with your eyes is so genuine and personal, random customers don't really deserve that lol
brokenlatteart [OP] 9 points 3y ago
Cause he said “make sure to smile and connect with your customers” and I was like okay “how am I supposed smile with a mask on” “well smile with your eyes” like boy get out of here.
MonstrousGiggling 2 points 3y ago
Lmfao sounds like they were just trying to not sound like a dumbass but just ended up reaffirming it lmao
trashabrina 1 points 3y ago
during our conference call before CAT pay was ended for partners who were willing (i.e. forced to go back because being scared of working in public isn’t a valid reason to not work) to go back, our DM said “Like Tyra says, smize”
MonstrousGiggling 11 points 3y ago
Okay this is super cheesy but I kinda really miss the smiles of my co-workers hahaha.

Or like they'll say something funny or appealing and my smile is huge under the mask but normally I wouldn't have to say anything because it's clear how amused I am but now I have to like do a fake laugh to confirm my amusement, idk lmao.
miniinovaa 4 points 3y ago
I transferred just as this all hit and I literally don’t know any of my coworkers faces lmao just their eyes
Marinaseaglass 17 points 3y ago
Honestly, if they take away the $3 I have to stop wearing my mask so I can increase my hours.

The extra $3 helps me be able to afford to work shorter shifts, which is necessary when working hard with heavy breathing at a decreased oxygen rate.

I have anxiety attacks wearing them longer, because my brain interprets the increased difficulty breathing as anxiety. Not to mention the exhaustion after a shift from working so long with oxygen deprivation.

This does not even include the cost I have to spend for my own masks, as the masks provided by the store have no wire to fit it to my face so my glasses don't *fog (yes, I have followed all the suggestions to keep them from fogging, those combined with the wire mask are what work.)

Catastrophe pay needs to continue until we are no longer required to follow catastrophe measures.

If it is removed, I am all for protesting by not signing the paper disclosing my personal health at check-in. (Still won't work with a fever, but I won't sign to disclose that.) It's technically a rights violation anyway.

*Edited for spelling

I wear surgical masks for 12 hours at work, because I work at a hospital. I know it sucks, and I know people are jerks, but masks help you not spread anything, especially since a lot of people are asymptomatic. Sometimes you have to be compassionate even when customers and the company are assholes.
Kavjan 6 points 3y ago
And we are thrilled and thank you for your service! My mom is a nurse and I think you guys are fucking heroes right now. However, our job is minimum wage and working under these extenuating circumstances isn't something any of us really signed up for. I want to help reduce spread in order to help everyone, but being compensated a little extra to do an additional job that I didn't sign up for is very helpful during these stressful times.
pcp2md 1 points 3y ago
Hey me too! Are you a resident or fellow?
TinyItalian 9 points 3y ago
I see where you’re coming from... but in my mind we aren’t wearing masks because we’re getting paid extra, we’re wearing it for our own safety and for others and our coworkers safety around us. Although customers are choosing to be disrespectful, at least we have our masks on to create some barrier for our safety.
rachelsmall 3 points 3y ago
Almost there, but not quite. When you wear a mask, you’re protecting others from you. If you were a mask, you’re still at risk from others not wearing masks.

Customers are actively choosing to not wear a mask for their brief comfort, and consistently disrespect barriers, safety boundaries, etc.
TinyItalian 2 points 3y ago
Yes, you are correct! I wasn’t really gonna make this point lol but I’ve learned from doctors as well that masks are meant to be worn by people that want to protect others from their symptoms. However, in this situation, we are told that some people could have the disease without showing symptoms... so perhaps it’s better to be safe than sorry and wear masks just in case while cases are still high and testing supplies are low, especially since we are told that covid is extremely contagious. And creating a barrier, even as minuscule as a mask can be, to me is better than nothin.
annoyinglyuseless 5 points 3y ago
My sm was surprised and said we made more in a single day about 2 weeks ago than a whole week last year. And that every day this week has been the same. Starbucks most definitely has the money to keep the $3 extra pay.

Every store around us has almost doubled in sales compared to last year.. were all burned out.
wontonbitch 4 points 3y ago
Don't think of it as protecting the customer. Think of it as protecting yourself and your team. Put yourself and your coworkers first. This selfish mindset is negative and will bring you down, in a time where we need to be as positive and optimistic as we can. Take care of yourself, health wise and mentally. The more together we are as a team, the more positive our work environment will be. We're all in this together 🥰
sweetbabidoll295 2 points 3y ago
I have said from the get go- if I am required to wear a mask, so are customers.

If they don’t have to- then neither should I! It’s not equal playing ground.
pretiburdi 2 points 3y ago
This is gonna suck as advice but try different masks! I am excited to get some from redbubble so I'll give you my review when they show up, but I totally understand they can feel suffocating I don't know how asia does it; when I was in japan people wore them in the dead of summer which I could not understand lol (I understand why I don't understand how haha)
SkylerSayys 1 points 3y ago
I heard the extra $3 was more for if your store shuts down after cat pay ends, you have that extra money from before from my SM, not because of all the stuff we have to deal with.
brokenlatteart [OP] 13 points 3y ago
Yeah but it was also a way to encourage the ones who could work to stay and work and not just take the pay leave.
SkylerSayys 2 points 3y ago
I do agree, I was just sharing what I had heard about it.

Quit complaining and be thankful you even have a job right now. Think about the healthcare workers that have to wear that shit for 12+ HOURS everyday.
PhenomenalPhoenix 18 points 3y ago
I really hate when people make that argument. Healthcare workers are more used to it than everyone else, also they aren’t wearing masks 24/7 while they work because they change masks between patients, they get breaks in their mask wearing. We don’t. So fuck off with that argument. Also people are allowed to dislike wearing masks
miniinovaa 9 points 3y ago
Not to mention they went for that career.... like knowing their life would be on the line in a pandemic? Lmao I’m a fucking barista I didn’t not sign up for this knowing I’d have to risk getting my family sick or not be able to pay bills
reiiayanami 8 points 3y ago
Healthcare workers deserve better too bro, but this is the starbucks subreddit
sholbyy 6 points 3y ago
I mean, to be fair, healthcare workers signed up for that when they chose to be healthcare workers.
rachelsmall 4 points 3y ago
And probably make a smidge more than minimum wage.
