Monday (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by SkullJooce
I'm sure many of you already know the details, but this Monday partners are going to be given three choices.

1) Be at risk of limited hours

2) Take unpaid leave

3) "the choice of unemployment"

Small things will vary by state and district.

Be safe out there.

Keep in mind that many partners have wanted to have the lay-off and unemployment option. We may find that most partners are able to have the option they would prefer. Ideally, partners wanting to be on unemployment can do so, those wanting a temporary leave can do so, and those who want hours will find enough hours left ti cover them. Ideally. Lots of moving pieces here. This is tough stuff, tough conversations, and tough decisions for many of us, but this is meant to give everyone a good path forward, hopefully, that works for them. Be safe, be well, be kind, and let’s all do our best to come out if this thing in decent shape as people and a business. Much Love, y’all.

I feel like I’m caught between a rock and a hard place. I literally have no idea how to make a wise decision here, if I have limited hours then how am I going to pay my rent? If I can get unemployment (moved to WA state from CA right before the virus was a thing and by the time I could get my WA state license n things the state offices all closed down, so I’m not even sure where my residency is officially) then do I take whatever hours I can get and have partial unemployment if that’s even possible?? Does the LOA allow you to be on unemployment, and am I even eligible? I have so many questions lol

I do believe with limited hours we qualify for partial unemployment as long as the gross amount of pay is under the states weekly amount. And then also until July 31st, the extra 600 too.

For a voluntary leave of absence I do not think that qualifies unless it’s for a child who’s home from school ( which by mid June most schools are out and that coverage would end)

possibly for other risk factors but not sure.

Okay I see, thank you for your reply!! :)

Do you know if they’re cutting hours that are already scheduled? Or starting with the 3 week schedule they’re cutting?
SkullJooce [OP] 3 points 3y ago
Whatever schedules you do have shouldn’t change

I am a green bean, going on my second week so I'm a little behind. What is happening Monday? I havent heard anything about my store for something happening then?
SkullJooce [OP] 2 points 3y ago
Details will differ depending on where you work, but the listed options above will be given starting Monday. SMs are supposed to have one-on-ones or phone calls with their partners informing them on Monday, but I can’t speak for how it will actually play out for everyone.

You are not in danger of being fired, and your personal hours might be fine. In my district, hours are being cut dramatically and it’s very difficult for a lot of people. For example, I’m getting 9hrs (2 shifts) next week. A friend of mine is getting 4 (1 shift). I’m not sure what it’s like where you work, but it might not be as bad. I’d say some districts might go on without any dramatic changes

Edit: my guess is that since your store was hiring, everything will be okay. There is a hiring freeze where I work haha

Oh wow, okay. Thank you for the information! I work in SC but I'm in a tourist town at the same time so things are still pretty busy where we are but I know our third week (now next week) schedule hasnt been posted yet when our SM is usually on it fast. So I wonder if that's not what will happen...
SkullJooce [OP] 2 points 3y ago
I’m sure since you were hired recently you won’t be very impacted! The fact that they were hiring alone seems to be a good sign to me. If you do have any questions definitely ask your SM

Honestly, I would be happy to have been laid off and stay at home while collecting my $2000 a month, but if you go on leave by choice you’re not eligible.

$2000 a month at the $17 / hour I make with service pay is the equivalent of me working 29 hours per week. I’m currently working like 10-15 per week AND risking exposure each day.
SkullJooce [OP] 2 points 3y ago
Keep in mind they aren’t laying anyone off. You would be quitting.
ahbeeceeess 3 points 3y ago
That’s what I mean. I don’t want to quit because I still need a job when this is all over, but if they actually did lay me off I’d be making more money
SkullJooce [OP] 2 points 3y ago
Yeah, I know of several partners personally who are getting screwed over by this. We live in an expensive area and hours are being cut dramatically (ex: I only have 4 shifts total over the next two weeks). It’s a truly unfortunate situation.
christinekwine 2 points 3y ago
You would be quitting? I thought it was an approved leave option through September?
SkullJooce [OP] 1 points 3y ago
One of the options is quitting, phrased as choosing unemployment. Unpaid leave is one of the other options as well, and you keep your benefits but are unlikely to get unemployment assistance.
christinekwine 3 points 3y ago
I’m trying to get answers before Monday so I can make an informed decision about health insurance as well.
mykotman12 1 points 3y ago
If you quit, you won’t be eligible for unemployment though.
christinekwine 1 points 3y ago
So the unpaid leave is the one that goes through end of September?

I am currently on medical leave because of COVID (high risk, underlying conditions)... I was considering ending my medical leave and taking this new leave so I don’t waste my medical leave if I may need it in the future.

On leave, I am currently able to collect unemployment.
