Add On Charges (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by FairMaidenRiverMouth
I work for a licensee store and I've always wondered: why do we charge extra for certain add on, like extra syrup or shots, but not dry ingredients like extra matcha or dry inclusions?

Not sure about licensed stores but at corporate stores it’s a 50-75¢ upcharge. Adding vanilla bean powder or berry scoops or something always has an upcharge, unless it’s already in the drink. So you could get a Strawberry Açaí with extra strawberry inclusions for the same price as the regular drink, but you can’t get a Strawberry Creme Frappuccino with strawberry inclusions without an upcharge

I think that's what is confusing to me. So someone could add like 6 scoops of matcha and the matcha latte is still the same price?

Exactly. It’s supposed to be that way to modify the beverage for an individual’s own preference but boy do we be getting some nasty abominations

Oh yeah, tell me about it, haha. Thanks for breaking it down for me.

If it’s included in the drinks then any extra doesn’t get charged. Like mocha sauce is already in the mocha frap so if customers want mocha drizzle on top, they don’t get charged extra. Also, idk if this still applies but things of the same consistency won’t add extra. So if you’re getting a vanilla latte with a bunch of other syrups, it’s just 0.50 for syrups in general. But you can add white mocha to a mocha without extra charge bc the sauces are the same consistency (sauce) (this needs to be fact checked tho. It used to be true)

Thanks, it just boggles my mind how pricing it all is supposed to work. Our POS doesn't automatically price things out when we add in the modifiers because it wasn't explained to our mgt. when our store was opening and we had to create our own POS.

I'll try to find more info through the portal.

Licensed stores have a long list of policies they have to follow and what they can and can't do for pricing. It's all in the contract that let's them open their licensed store.

Some of the add ons are obvious because it uses more product and costs the store more money to make the drink, but there's no consistency, and it often annoys customers who don't know the difference between licensed and corporate stores.

Wow, haha...they didn't give me squat about pricing. They sincerely left me to my own devices when I was setting up the store for the university. I absolutely hate that I run the store and don't even know how things are supposed to be charged.

That's pretty typical for licensed stores. Starbucks doesn't do enough oversight or training for licensed stores. Corporate partners can usually instantly tell the difference because of this.

Yeah, I've noticed the lack of training and guidance through other stores I've helped within our company. We'd love to comply and run like corporate stores to streamline things, but alas. Money and pride, I guess.
