how can we not enforce masks??(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by tang0foxtr0t
I'm from MA and like most other states right now people are legally required to wear masks in public/open spaces, but my SM told us we're not allowed to enforce customers wearing masks because we want to make it a "good experience" and I'm just not sure how that's legally possible. Every other store that's open in our little plaza has a sign on the door saying masks are required by law to enter.

I saw today that in Philadelphia we can call 311 about health and safety violations so you should look into who to contact in your state/city. It's so awful that we aren't allowed this for our safety and really shows that Starbucks doesn't care about us.

My sm posted a huge sign on the front door to tell customers about “how sanitary the baristas are and the precautions that were following to ensure the safety of the customer for the best experience” but like what about us? Customers don’t wear masks. They don’t follow social distancing. They’re short and snippy with us. Are we not considered people lol

I am with you on this concern & I think a number of partners at my store are. Our SM has said "we are not the police" in regard to enforcing the wearing of masks but that, of course, they are mandatory to enter the store. We already deal with altercations, small & large, on most days, so I'm concerned how everyone will react moving ahead. We're making coffees at an entry-level job, not trained in de-escalation.
(Edit for typo)

we're not the police, but we kick people out for breaking other laws like doing drugs in the bathroom all the time, how come we're not required to enforce this one?

I hear you. I guess, like, what do we mean by "enforce"? Telling a customer without a mask on that it is mandatory to enter seems reasonable & the least that should be done. So if they say no? That's not a normal or appropriate situation; it has already escalated. Are they just picking up? Are they coming in to order?
We've also been told that if they have no mask/refuse to wear, we can take their order outside & then input it ourselves inside. So will we be taking their credit cards or phones?
I don't know, honestly all feels very bullshitty & exhausting.

I completely agree. I’m in CT and my SM said we can be “informative” but not forcing and we can offer the store masks.
I just don’t understand how the company is not going to get into some legal trouble for this.
I get that people could pull a gun on us or something. But that’s when you call the police. Idk I don’t get it. I feel like the company was doing so well to protect us and support us, and now we are right back to how things were.

People could pull a gun on us for anything though, that sounds like such a dumb reason. We’re putting other customers (high risk, elderly, underlying conditions) at risk too, so they can’t even claim that it’s for the customers.

I get that Starbucks wants money from their customers. But I don’t understand why they don’t have the balls to just say these are the rules! People would respect it right now tbh. They would look better from society. Not to mention partners physically can’t social distance. Customers really should be appalled by what they see. But they don’t care and just want coffee.
I’m just trying to find some way to be hopeful and all I want to be is pessimistic. Idk

My state doesn’t require masks. I work in a tarbucks, and the target as a whole frequently reaches capacity, but we still aren’t requiring masks for anyone but team members.

A security guard in Michigan was shot and killed by a member of a family he asked to wear a mask.

Baker had a hotline set up specifically for this, to report stores not following the mask ban rule.
