I’m thinking about turning the green apron in.... thoughts?(self.starbucksbaristas)

so I have now worked at Starbucks for over a year and a half and honestly it’s been a great experience. I love my coworkers, my managers are usually understanding and work with me on my schedule to work with it with school, and sometimes we get great customers. But my story is disgusting. It was made with not sealed concrete floors, and there’s always puddles everywhere. There’s mold and fungus growing in places, and the store is just very dirty. Stuff like hot water doesn’t always work, along wit other things. Management is aware of these situations and it’s not fixing them and like I said I’ve been here over a year. We found black mold and sludge in the ice bins one time that keeps reoccurring because cleaning is just not a priority but drive-through times are. I honestly feel bad at this point serving people because our store is so dirty. So that is why I’m thinking about turning in my apron and giving my two weeks. The only problem is I have to find another job before I can leave. Any input would be helpful. thank you for listening to my rant.
UPDATE: I had an interview and now a second interview with training set up with a correctional facility. This would be a great job for me because I plan on entering law-enforcement upon my graduation in fall 2021. I have already written out my two weeks notice to the Starbucks and plan on handing it in once I get the job (or seal the deal haha).

yeah either switch to a new job or try transferring to a diff store. only you can decide what's best for you.
Hermione117 [OP]2 points3y ago
thank you!
cilantroprince4 points3y ago
each store is very different, i’ve seen many as i’m usually the one they send to fill in when other stores need coverage. if that’s your only issue with your job you might consider finding one that’s run much better, but if you already have some distaste that this is amplifying, then listen to your heart on what you have to do best of luck!!!

Report them report them report them.
Seriously, this is how people get sick and die after eating at dirty restaurants. What happens if you have an old person or someone immune compromised that gets food or a drink for you that's contaminated?
Quite frankly you have a moral and ethnical obligation to report this and are really doing the wrong thing if you don't.

So do I call PCC?? Or the health department?
romansapprentice2 points3y ago
I'd do PCC and call the health department if you don't see any changes. Honestly if you're ready to leave I'd probably do both at the same time, at least in that case you'll know that the government is aware and will deal with them when you're gone.
Good luck on the new job!
Hermione117 [OP]2 points3y ago
thank you! I will do that then. I’ll be turning my letter in today, so I guess I’ll just start making phone calls tomorrow. Sidenote. I am not looking forward to working out my two weeks because in the past when people have done that everyone at the store has been really mean to the person leaving :(
romansapprentice2 points3y ago
Sounds like a lot of them suck then, explains why the lack of cleanliness doesn't bother them quite frankly.
I'd just try to remember that even if they're nasty the next two weeks, it'll only bother you if you let it. When it's five years from now and you've finished your degree and working in your career field, you'll barely remember any of the things they're gonna say or do in the next two weeks
Also, forgot if you said you've given in the two week's notice yet but...you're really not required to give one at all. If you're all set with your new job there's really no need to give one I suppose. ;)

Sounds close to how my store is :(
Hermione117 [OP]3 points3y ago
Oh really? The other stores in my district are really really nice and not dirty! My store is less then three years old, and falling apart. there’s rot in the walls by the sinks and ugh it makes me so upset to work and serve people drinks made there.
mykotman122 points3y ago
Can you transfer to a different store?
Hermione117 [OP]1 points3y ago
I am going to try to but when i mentioned it to my SM she said they aren’t doing transfers due to covid rn? So i’m just applying to other jobs outside of customer service cause i’m kinda done at this point.

Wait until this week is over at least. There’s talk about severance pay.

First off i will be a police officer. I want to actually insight some change in this country and stand up to those bad cops and not sit by and watch more people loose their lives. Also I am not going to work a beat for my whole career, I want to be a sex crimes detective so yeah I won’t be a beat cop forever lol
Also I already took cat pay, and that is done on June first so that’s not an option anymore. Plus I have insurance through my parents till I am 26 so I am not worried about that. If you don’t have any advice as to how and handle health code violations or get my store to do better and get management to care please don’t bother commenting.
pitachitah1 points3y ago
You know, a hundred and fifty years worth of police academy grads have said that, but i'm sure you're gunna be the one to actoully get it done. Good luck.

does your store have a clean play day? if not try talking to ur store manager about one! if nothing is done i would definetly call the partner help line and complain or tell the health inspector when they come
Hermione117 [OP]1 points3y ago
Yes! i’m actually scheduled for clean play tomorrow. The main problem is that the building that the stores and is very poorly built. Our drains are raised at least an inch above the rest of the ground so nothing drains properly and I’m standing in a puddle throughout my entire shift.
pxvgd2 points3y ago
oh my gosh thats awful :( please transfer stores if you're able to! my boyfriend said he was moving when he transfered stores so he didnt step on any toes if that helps!
Hermione117 [OP]1 points3y ago
haha right as I was writing a reply to this post my manager called to see if I could come in and cover because two partners are out sick today. I kindly declined and used the excuse of homework. I really don’t want to spend another minute more then my scheduled shift in that place :/
netocanessa1 points3y ago
Wow that sounds like an awful work environment... I’m sorry. Maybe you should try transferring, if you like the company and working for Starbucks that is... otherwise perhaps leaving is the best option
Hermione117 [OP]1 points3y ago
I’m honestly just looking for another job that’s actually career Relevant to what I wanna do in life. I just haven’t left yet because I want to have another job lined up before I quit. Honestly though it just keeps getting worse daily, a partner threw up at work the other day and they still made her come in yesterday. All because she couldn’t find coverage. I ended up working 11 AM to close so that she could go home because the manager did not want to stay in close. It’s just getting worse and worse and I slowly am beginning to hate my time there.
coffeemaster1911 points3y ago
If you really like the job I would say don’t turn in the green apron just yet. Sit down with your store manager and let her know all of your concerns. Tell your concerns to other baristas too so they can back you up as well. If your SM isn’t listening to you, you can always reach out to your DM. This is isn’t always the best option but if there is serious health and safety issues like this at your store and your SM isn’t acknowledging it, your DM should know about it.
Hermione117 [OP]1 points3y ago
That’s the thing I have talk to my general store manager I’ve let her know about issues in the store. I found black mold growing in the ice bin, the one in the back of the store that makes all the ice, and she told me well just scoop out the pieces that have mold on them. I asked her if I should just clean the whole thing like we do on clean play (that hasn’t been done in probably four months) and she said no the story is too busy to have you in the back cleaning right now.
When the hot water went out a month ago she didn’t call it in for two days and told nobody to call it in because “it would come back on eventually“.
I’m just disgusted at the way the store is cleaned. I feel sick when I have to serve people dirty drinks. i’ve actually completely stopped eating or drinking anything that comes out of that store, I bring my own water bottle filled up to work and my own snacks and I only eat the prepackaged snacks at the store.
at this point I don’t know what else I can do, I thought about calling the health department anonymously but I’m not sure how to do that without it being traced back to me. There’s been rumors of eco-sure coming to check but since they didn’t shut us down last time I’m pretty sure they can get away with anything. I’m just a barista and all of the shifts just say well it could be worse and don’t want to report or do anything extra. Honestly I think I’m just going to be done.
Lollipop_Lawliet951 points3y ago
This.
Worse comes to worse, I would report them to the health department anonymously. They will be forced to do a better job or risk getting their store shut down.
Your manager needs to have a routine set up to clean this stuff. My store is practically spotless because we have a REALLY great cleaning routine. Basically, we deep clean one section a day every week.
