Nothing has changed with the recipe... someone just made your drink very incorrectly unfortunately.

I asked an employee to remake it and they did but it was just as sweet as before. They said “I’m sorry there must be something wrong with our pump” like uhhhhh what do you mean.... do you not wash your pump.... how does it being sweet have to do with the pump you’re supposed to be washing every day....?(I didn’t say this to them but I was thinking it)

Just to answer about the pump thing- the cleanliness has nothing to do with it if the pump messes up. It's how it's put back together AFTER its cleaned/sometimes if a pump gets heavy use within a day some pieces come loose and it messes up. These issues aren't always visible either, and one only catches it if they do an iced drink with normal amounts of pumps and they see exactly how full the bottom is, and go "hmmm that doesn't look normal. Must be getting a little bit over/under when I pump the syrup than usual", and that will strongly affect taste. If its during peak, everyone is moving at 200mph so we are less likely to notice that until it slows down and someone orders the right drink and we see it and correct it.

I never realized that was the reason we used different pumps! That’s good to know.

Pumps are adjustable too, like the CBS pumps (which are shorter) can be made taller. If someone messes with how its adjusted, its messed up. Adjusting is very hard though from what I've experienced, and I think only the CBS ones can adjust by that much? Like they all can adjust somewhat, but its more of a flaw i think, but we had a CBS mocha that pumped like the normal mocha and we made it shorter so it was right, so i know its possible because we did it. It took literally all day to do though

No sometimes the wrong pump is used. We have different ones for mocha and white mocha as they are thicker and require a different size pump. If the white mocha pump was accidentally put together instead of the chai, it would be putting more chai in the drink because it has a wider gauge

Sounds like a case of "I was too lazy add water in the chai this time."
SkylerSayys 12 points 3y ago
Just popping in here to say that an alarming amount of people don't even know they need to add water to hot chais. It may not be lazy but an honest mistake because they were, like me, not told about that during training.
wooperquil 5 points 3y ago
I was actually trained not to put water in my chais, but I learned at my new store we don’t do dat
SkylerSayys 5 points 3y ago
Yeah lots of people don't know how to do chais to standard and that causes trainers to incorrectly train. It creates a lot of karen issues.... 😬

Back at my old store they taught me that water USED TO be part of the recipe. They said it no longer was the recipe, and they even told customers that water is no longer part of the recipe so they didn’t have to ask for no water anymore. My current store does water in chai lattes
wooperquil 2 points 3y ago
They told me that’s what the recipe called for and that it “recently changed back to the old recipe” when I told them when I found out. They said it’s a district thing? But imo that didn’t make sense since Starbucks is a huge company so
TheFifthCrow 3 points 3y ago
All of the customers I make chais for ask for no water because it makes the chai taste better, and honestly I have to agree with them.
kizuni_ 1 points 3y ago
Whenever I’d make my own chai, I’d never put water and it definitely didn’t taste that sweet, the flavor was just more potent. This was like Dunkin Donutes level sweet
mobiledanceteam 3 points 3y ago
Nope, has not changed
bbun223 3 points 3y ago
Yikes! Only one time ever did I encounter something like this. I kept remaking a customers chai and she kept saying it was too sweet and “spicy”. Finally I made one for myself and she was right... it tasted way off. Maybe the chai syrup wasn’t changed out after 24 hours or something? Or it really is a not washing the pump everyday issue.
SkylerSayys 2 points 3y ago
Were you adding water? That's very important.
romansapprentice 1 points 3y ago
Isn't the concentrate we use for the drink sweetened?

Maybe they're doing all milk versus for half water half milk? Idk if that's change the flavor in the way you describe though.
