New Manager in need of help (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Lollipop_Lawliet95
Hello guys! I just became the new manager at a Starbucks in my local grocery store. A few points I should make is that I’ve been working for Starbucks for a total of two months. Yep. That’s right. I got hired as a manager without ever working at Starbucks in my freaking life.

Anyways... so even though I am brand new to Starbucks and learning everything all at once, my district manager and grocery manager have both threatened my jobs if I don’t “step up” now here is another point... my trainer did not get the proper training she needed to become manager either. So I only have what she knows. Now... there are two things I need help with.

1. PPV guide (Period Planning Visit guide)

2. Action plan

The reason I am coming here is because when I asked how I was supposed to do these things (no training mind you) I got told that I should be able to do these things by myself by both managers. So basically my job is currently on the line and I have to pull something out of my butt or I won’t be able to keep my job. My staff loves me and they are doing everything they can to help me out too, more with the coffee side of things.

If you are able to help me, please comment down below or pm me. Thank you!

So it seems like you work at a licensed store and not a corporate store. Meaning you technically work for the grocery store and not starbucks. That being said, you should still have a district manager who works for starbucks and covers your store. Try to find their contact info and reach out to them for help.

Unfortunately, that’s who I’m talking about in my post. My Starbucks district manager went to my grocery store manager and told her a bunch of BS. They are deciding by her next visit whether or not I get to keep my job just because I asked her how to fill out the action plan... She told my store manager that I have ‘No leadership or initiative’ skills, that ‘she makes excuses’ and that the only reason I got certified is because they would have gotten an NNC if they didn’t.

Again, I’m BRAND NEW to Starbucks and I am learning everything at the same time. I was just trying to be honest with her, and told her I wasn’t pulling sales because at that moment in time, it wasn’t one the top of mine and my trainer’s priority list. With Covid going on, we lost 5k in sales a week, so my trainer decided to just focus on things like going on store link, ordering stuff, barista basics training (again, only been working at Starbucks for 2 whole months) Starbucks values, standards, etc. My trainer screwed me over when the DM came too, not being honest with her about my training. It’s just all kinds of screwed up. I’m trying to learn as much as I can, and I’m just getting to a point where I feel like I have a pretty good grasp on all those things mentioned above.

Now I’m learning about conference calls, what my store is lacking in terms of routine (voycalls, cleaning routine, certifying barista trainers, gaps in schedule, asking for names (only because we usually just have regulars), this action plan thingy, and the eight point thing in the PPV guide. And no one but me myself and I (and hopefully a nice person on reddit) is going to help me with PPV and Action Plan

Sorry for this long explanation, just trying to give as much info as possible on what I know and don’t know and what my current situation is.

Sounds like you're in a licensed store. If so what you're describing is sadly typical. They expect to come into the job knowing how to do it well and don't want to spend time or energy teaching you to be better at it.

For PPV, a district manager usually spends 1-3 hours walking through your store with you, making sure that things are ready for the next planning period, and looking for anything wrong that needs to be fixed. Every DM is a little bit different about what they're looking for, some are more focused on things that directly hit the P&L, others are looking more from a customer perspective what they might notice that make a good or bad experience.

The action plan should detail what steps you're taking to improve the store and implement any changes for the next planning period. i.e. training, coaching, hiring/firing, Specifically what are you doing, and what is your team doing to make those changes happen.

Okay yeah I kinda get it, the only thing I’m having trouble with the action plan is coming up with “standards” lol

As for the PPV I kind of get it I just need to learn the definition of each category

You don't need to come up with your own standards, starbucks already has most of those made for you. The health checks are a good place to start. There's about a dozen of them for inventory, cash management, etc.

Would that kind of stuff be on store link? Sorry if I’m asking stupid questions I’m just terrified to ask my district manager and lose my job

I'm not sure if you have access to the same info that corporate partners have. I just log into partner hub and can do a search for "health check" or go to my store home page to get to them. I can dm you some of it.
