Unpaid leave or severance package??? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by lesbian_valkyrie
There are rumors going around that store managers are going to be asking partners to take unpaid leave or voluntarily quit and take da severance package? Does anyone have information on this? I’m kind of confused. If I take the unpaid leave will I qualify for unemployment? (I’m from California)

Update: there are 3 options we can choose from.
1) keep working and be transferred out if needed for business needs
2) take voluntary LOA until September, Starbucks your healthcare premiums and you MAY be eligible for unemployment (I checked with California and most likely not because it’s a voluntary LOA), however if your store manager needs you to come back they expect you to go back to work with it 2-3 days with open availability, if you can’t go back to work with open availability or you don’t feel comfortable going back to work you will be terminated.
3) take the severance package where you’ll be paid out for 80 hours in one lump sum, you would qualify for COBRA and their ridiculous healthcare premiums (for my spouse and I it would be $3200 for health and $200 for dental) and be marked down and “involuntary separation” but still be rehireable.
With that said, you can only pick one option. You can’t decide in a week that you want to take the LOA or the severance package you can only choose one.
I honestly think this is a way for Starbucks to cut labor and not have to worry about paying people or having to fire them and force them to take LOA so they don’t have to pay unemployment. We shall see if they are forced to lay people off for force them to take LOA though.

No one knows anything YET. Tomorrow is the call to SMs. Hang on - all info will be released soon.

I think it depends on your store and if that store has suffered any. My store did fine during the virus so we aren’t having any of these offers.

Thank you! I honestly have no idea what is happening with my store. I know our sales are down and most people are getting less than 20 hours a week, including supervisors.

So did my store, but we are still being offered these, whatever they are. We don’t actually find out until tomorrow. Labor cuts are happening like never before. Wait until tomorrow, thats when SMs are explaining everything. So your SM might be talking to you this week about it.

Ooo, your store might be affected. It never hurts to be proactive and ask your manager. Just pull them side privately and let them know what you’ve seen wandering around on social media, and ask if you have anything to worry about.

Me and a couple other people already have. She said she won’t know until tomorrow after her conference call with our DM and RM. She has been known to withhold things from us though and lie to us about certain things. So maybe she is just waiting for confirmation that she needs to have conversations with us this week?

my manager talked to us today too. she doesn’t ever hold back information from us, and they (at least here in WV) don’t know anything for sure yet until their call tomorrow. but that’s all i know. she doesn’t say a word till she has solid information to prevent rumors and stress.

Maybe. Most Managers don’t want the trouble of saying something without confirmation to back them up. Keep us updated!
