Short sized rant about CS (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by golden_pinky
So I have been criticized for doing too much myself when I'm on bar (grabbing ice, sanitizer, syrups, lids, etc.) and have been told to utilize a CS more when there is one. Meanwhile when I have a CS and I need something real quick (let's use dark caramel as an example) and there are other drinks (7) for that same car I could work on, wouldn't it make sense to ask for help? Well everytime I ask for help I get responses about them being extremely busy and their tasks that need finishing before they can get to mine. And I agree with them! I wish there wasn't so much obsessive time pressure. I wish I could just go grab dark caramel. But no matter what I do, I either feel like a needy barista, or a barista who can't stay planted. Anyone else relate?

Edit: grammar

Can anyone tell I had a minor dark caramel incident today?

I also hate being the one to ask for things. I'm pretty fast so I'd rather just grab it myself.

My store yells a lot... A LOT. Even borrowed partners don’t understand why we’re so loud but when we need something on the fly during peak and windows times at 30 and my manager wants to keep it there you best believe we’re getting that white mocha and then that kind of mindset is ingrained in us at all times so yeah... I’d get my dark caramel right away or in my case today, matcha. Just start yelling. Like obscenely loud. They’ll want you to shut up so they’ll get ya what ya need

When I am CS and a barista yells at me, I do it right away haha.

BTW this comment is not meant to be a criticism. CS is hard af. I'm bad at CS.

My store is similar in that borrowed partners come and don't understand our culture. We tend to playfully bully each other.

Legit, that’s why I quit Starbucks back in 2014 when playbook was being introduced (assuming that’s what’s still being used and what OP is talking about). It really messed with my mental health at work and I had to quit.

I got in trouble for this with one of my shifts. A lot. I came from a high-volume Barnes and Noble college cafe at an SEC school (read: 100s of customers in the morning and we were open on game days.) I worked there for a year before working at Starbucks for almost three. We had food, bar, and register. That's it. I was used to doing *a lot* at once. And then I had to get used to working in a similar environment but kind of just...stay where I am? that was really hard to get used to. Luckily I usually worked with great people on bar or CS, but the few times I didn't, I just wanted to get things myself.

This is why I love working nights. We have 3 baristas and a shift closing (while oftentimes remaining pretty busy) I am kind of floating around doing tasks. Even on window I will try to help the bar barista with any cold bar drinks I can. Working the mids is a little annoying for me just because the mentality is so different and like you said, you just can’t leave your position.

In my store when CS is asked to slide into bar support whatever they are doing is dropped so they can come help.
