I'll be blunt: how will this make a difference? Is it going to help change anything or is it just going to make you feel good?

I think people knowing that they have support and protection makes a huge difference. It’s putting your money where your mouth is. It’s a form of peaceful protest like any other.
gaayrat 11 points 3y ago
Unfortunately I think something like that would bring more attention to the act than the cause, which makes it unhelpful. Donate to fundraisers, if you’re white go to protests and act as a barrier between the police & black protestors (I promise they’re less likely to attack you), check in on the black people in your life.

There’s a good thread on twitter going around about non-optical allyhsip. Optical allyship is defined as allyship that serves at the surface level to make a statement but doesn’t go beneath the surface & isn’t aimed at breaking from the system of powers that oppress. This feels like optical allyship to me
Mariiriini 3 points 3y ago
Don't make that promise, it's false. They've been tear gassing and assaulting white protestors in Seattle and Portland, with white protestors being beaten down with trudgeons while on the ground unprovoked.

It's still important to go, but let's stop pretending being white gives you protection. Being POC is a target, being against cops makes you a target, and being white doesn't give you a free pass from it.

I said less likely, I didn’t say the wouldn’t, but I could’ve chosen my words better

When the protesting first started, if you were white it was less likely. White people were even jumping infront of poc but now the cops are just saying fuck everybody

If you’re white and looking for something to do, donate to important groups and gofundme accounts, or maybe do some volunteering in your community. Wearing BLM shirts could get you in trouble and you won’t be directly supporting POC in need.
throwaway1209340987 2 points 3y ago
The thing is, I can do both. I can do all of these things. And wearing BLM shirts is supporting Black community, directly. Immediately. I think messages of protest and solidarity and support and unrest are extremely important right now, not just for BPOC to see, but for everyone to see. Especially when you work for a company that refuses to take a stand and is instead leaning on mandated copaganda/“not all cops” rhetoric.

I’m not saying that it’s a bad sentiment, but I don’t think it’s gonna go well overall, since corporations are spineless and would rather stay neutral than directly address an issue that’s considered political (whether it should be considered political is a separate, but important, issue). I don’t mean to say wearing BLM shirts is bad, but I don’t think it’s going to be as useful right now as direct support or support in other ways.

Hope you’re staying safe, wherever you are.

edit- meant to reply to the reply on my comment but I’m bad at reddit today apparently

You may acknowledge our differences when they are relevant and treat everyone with the same respect otherwise. In other words, don't make a big deal about melanin unless it's already being discussed. Don't do the #RaceTogether mistake all over again.

Even asking this question is a little weird but there's my 2¢.

Don't make any kind of political statement at work. No matter your intentions, good or bad (yours are good), you will likely be fired.
You can't take a stance of any kind at work. It reflects the company and they won't like it
Mariiriini 1 points 3y ago
Yeah, you'll get fired. Don't.

Donate to organizations, ask your local protest leaders how to help, don't connect any of it to Starbucks.

Matching shirts are performative. Show up for your community in other ways that are actually going to have an impact. I’ve read through the comments and your replies, and I see that you want people to know your store is a safe place, but if you haven’t created that environment already, getting shirts or signs isn’t going to change anything.

How about you just do your job? I’m black; you think I care about what the person who serves me my coffee thinks? You think writing a cute little message on my cup will fix everything? Your thoughts and prayers don’t mean shit. You’re a Starbucks barista, you have no political power, stop pretending you do.
_hamburglar__ 5 points 3y ago
Love this.
throwaway1209340987 5 points 3y ago
I don’t need political power to care. I don’t want to write on cups, I want people to know on sight that they are safe here. People are scared. And lots of people care what their baristas think; people ask all the time. When you work at a coffee shop, half of your job is building relationships with customers, listening to their problems, etc.
ashley441 4 points 3y ago
maybe you don’t care about the values of the people who “serves you your coffee” but outside of that coffee shop, they are either the people who choose to fight for the minority or the people who are killing them. so you’re implying that people with no political power just don’t matter? this is a country that is (relatively) democratic. the people are supposed to have a voice. yeah, you’re right. let’s all just watch human beings be murdered in cold blood- i’m not the president so i don’t have a say in any of it! what the fuck? is your level of thinking really that shallow? ideas have to start somewhere. shame on you for making someone (who has every GOOD INTENTION, which is very hard to come by nowadays) feel like they don’t matter! if you thought voicing your opinion would have no impact you wouldn’t have written this comment in the first place.
