severance package. i got accepted to law school so i was going to be quitting in july anyways. it kinda sucks bc i wanted to save as much money as possible before i left. i’m quite curious to see how much the severance pay is though. i’d also like to be guaranteed unemployment before i take that route.
Mariiriini4 points3y ago
You will be eligible for unemployment. If you're a barista it's 60 hours at your rate of pay plus an amount to cover COBRA if you had health benefits. You don't have to enroll in COBRA, but you'll get the money regardless.
sassy7girl3 points3y ago
Do you really trust that we qualify for unemployment for the severance aka “involuntary elimination”? Not trusting there’s any guarantee....
Do you know what amount to cover cobra and for how long? ( cobra can run 900-1000 per month per person) unless we get discount thru SBux, very unaffordable.
Mariiriini3 points3y ago
Yes. It's involuntary job elimination, it legally means "We don't need this person anymore and they do not have the option to retain their job at this time." It's legal to classify it that way because everyone simply requests and that data is not given to unemployment, only the final determination as DMs decide who gets Involuntarily Eliminated. Theoretically people who did not choose that package may, but volunteer layoffs getting unemployment is legal and has precedent in other companies.
Cobra payout is 1700 for a single partner with more depending on your other enrolled people in your household and the payout is made with Starbucks benefit costs in mind. You aren't required to use cobra, and loss of job is a valid event to shop for other insurances on your states health insurance exchange if your state isn't stuck in the early 1900s.

Ty for the info!!
psychgirl20192 points3y ago
Yes. Starbucks will classify your separation as “reduction in force-job elimination”. You’ll qualify for unemployment.

The form I read on the hub said, You can apply for unemployment as early as the first day you tell your manager you will either be taking the leave or severance. You get paid for 60 hours of work, or 84 if your a shift. There is a part about benefits too but it was confusing lol
PurpleTIEFighter8 points3y ago
Severance, which sucks because I love my partners but my manager dislikes me and I can't survive on seven hours a week. Thinking about it makes me a little teary even though I genuinely hate it here and find some of (...a lot of) the decisions this company makes fucking baffling.
criesincoffee6 points3y ago
I looked and I'm only scheduled 5 hours on the latest week. After a year of working 30+ hour weeks, severance it is!
PurpleTIEFighter2 points3y ago
I got a whopping nine. I'm so upset right now that I don't know what to do with myself.

I’m considering the unpaid LOA. None of the options are good, but at least I can take a shot at unemployment and if that doesn’t take, I can find some summer job.

I don’t think A voluntary’ LOA qualifies in most states for u/e- unless you are schooling a child (schools out mid June so that’s done) or/ have covid or are caring for someone w/it- it or- possibly for risk factors but who knows. Very difficult to find advance answers in this from unemployment commission . We imply it/ but how do we really know?
So dubious!! Def. reduced hours qualifies for it tho.
Mariiriini3 points3y ago
It really depends on the state. It does quality in Washington if you feel your work was unsafe, and I know two people who successfully applied and received benefits with that on their application.
YMMV absolutely, it's really about whether you want to gamble unemployment but have benefits paid or gamble that you will have more hours than unemployment pays but have to pay your benefits.
I personally don't see the value in package 2 unless you don't need Starbucks to pay the bills, only using it for pocket money/benefits. But I know several baristas that only have sbux for the insurance, so it's not useless.
mamastrawb2 points3y ago
Starbucks is explicitly saying they will list an _involuntary_ complete loss of hours. You will most likely be approved for unemployment.
Russellx992 points3y ago
Do you think if no one takes the LOA or The payout then they’ll just end up terminating employees?
2020themovie4 points3y ago
They worded it as preference...so. yikes.
Russellx993 points3y ago
So yeah? I’m a new hire about a month and a half in, I love the job but I do not need it like other people at the moment. I wouldn’t mind taking reduced hours but if it’s at the cost of them firing someone else then I’d rather take the LOA if I’m allowed to
glittterturtles2 points3y ago
Oh yikes... I didn’t think about that.
Wonderful_Nightmare3 points3y ago
Can I get unemployment in CA under package 2?
bakedalmond3 points3y ago
I’m considering taking the unpaid LOA like some others. Since I’m in Texas, I should be able to qualify for unemployment but we’ll see.
jumpingsquid3 points3y ago
What is this, now? Where can we find information about this (I’m only seeing vague comments) on the Hub? I do work tomorrow so I’m sure I will hear about something.
elsha0071 points3y ago
Go onto the partner hub and search for Partner Care Preferences. There's a PDF detailing our 3 choices. Your SM is supposed to meet with everyone to discuss what they want to do.
jumpingsquid2 points3y ago
Thanks for the tip!
xosadcykaxo3 points3y ago
What is this about? Ive only heard rumors but i dont wanna lose my job!
kaliedoscoping2 points3y ago
I’m taking the LOA, I think. I still haven’t gone back due to being mildly immunocompromised and have just been biding time with my personal leave and sick days. 60 hours sounds really good, but that’s only $600 (before taxes — not sure if you pay those on a severance package or not, but regardless) where I live. I’ll at least have a job to go back to in September if I can manage without the extra $450-500 or so I’d end up actually getting from the severance, and since things are so uncertain with finding other jobs right now I’m too afraid of that. Especially if you can apply for unemployment either way. I need to research specifics on the unemployment eligibility of both options more in my state before I decide firmly, but that’s my inclination as of now.
smilygirrl122 points3y ago
Yeah what is everyone talking about?
q-a-z-x7 points3y ago
In light of cat pay ending there will be three options to choose going forward:
1: keep on working
2: Covid LOA managed thru sbux and not sedgewick. It’s up to 120 days, unpaid, but you keep benefits and can apply for unemployment. If however they need people on the floor before that time they can call you back in at any time. You may amicably quit at that point but you are not eligible for a separation package (option 3).
3: Separation - you leave and are given a 60hr payout if yr a barista and an 80-something hour payout if yr a shift. It comes with a cobra payout for health if you’re eligible. You can apply for unemployment under the framing that you lost your job due to the position being removed. You’re eligible for rehire.
You have to choose by the 7th, and whether or not preferences are honored will be decided by the 12th when SMs confer with their DM.
I am just summing this up from a call I just had. Info doesn’t seem to have been shared effectively so things could change. Also I’m just a partner scrambling to make a choice and recall all this so definitely fact check me. This info is on the partner hub and your SM should be in the loop.
glittterturtles5 points3y ago
You should edit #1 to say keep on working, but having to accept cuts to your hours. Some people have predicted it could be as much as half your hours gone
Mariiriini3 points3y ago
The way it was explained to me was that stores will first try to rebalance partners based on desired hours. So if you have 10 partners that want 40 hours at one store and 8 partners that want only 20 hours at another, some of those partners that want 40 will be reshuffled to another store.
After that has been done, you'll be scheduled based on need. At my store, for instance, we need 3 people to take the LOA or severance to maintain everyone's preferred weekly hours. At some stores they need more partners to not exceed weekly hours preferred.
I'm heavily on "Do not trust what corporate says" 100% of the time, but there's a legitimate strategy here to take care of partners that stay. It just... relies on some leaving. Which isn't great. Minors and people working for fun money will likely be pressured to take 2 or 3, people with reduced availability will be hurt the most if not enough people leave.
sassy7girl2 points3y ago
Do you know what the cobra payout is? 😊
sassy7girl1 points3y ago
I’ve reviewed the PDF ( partner care preferences & faq )- and yes it Does says that- the scary thing is it’s like jumping off a cliff into the unknown b/c until you apply ( which would be the week of the 15th) you won’t know for sure- ( decisions need to be made by June 7th. I’m going to try to call employment commission but really doubtful at getting through to as these questions.
I guess I feel uncomfortable at the wording that says ( under 2 & 3) last sentence in each square- “ MAY be eligible for state unemployment and CARES act benefits due to loss of hours.
Would be much more reassuring if the “MAY” said “WILL”.
