LOA Unemployment Eligibility in AZ (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by sharkface0
Like most of you, I’m struggling with my decision on the three options. I’m leaning toward the unpaid LOA, just because it seems like the best decision with everything going on in my life at the moment.

But, I have no idea if taking the LOA will make me eligible for unemployment in Arizona. I tried calling the offices but they cannot tell me whether or not I am eligible, because they cannot guarantee it. I’m at a loss, because I don’t want to struggle on so little hours per week, but I’m not sure if taking the LOA will leave me without any financial support going forward. But I cannot know for sure unless I apply for unemployment, and since they recommend applying until the last day of work, I can’t back out once I make my decision.

Does anyone know is the LOA option is eligible for unemployment here in Arizona?

if you go on the partner hub, there is a really helpful document that talks about employment requirements. it lists all the states and the requirements to receive unemployment. it’s under COVID-19 resources and if you scroll down a little, it’s right near the top.

Unfortunately that chart is very basic and still doesn’t seem to guarantee compensation reassurance —

the real doubt is that it’s a LOA -not a lay-off even tho SBux says they’ll report it as complete loss of hours due to biz conditions/ how do we know unemployment commission won’t see it as a voluntary LOA anyway? Even though we are being made to choose due to loss of hours ( & not every store or peep is) they are trying to reduce the # of partners competing for hours overall - they can then shuffle peeps around I guess if needed as partners that choice 2/3

Still seems like a voluntary choice though which is why I feel dubious about the wording

I’m in AZ too and I was wondering the same thing.

Did you actually get through to talk to someone??!!!!

And explained completely or said complete involuntary loss of hours due to biz conditions

& then they still couldn’t verify if you’d qualify?

I do know However that you sh/qualify for partial u/e w choice one if ur gross pay falls under the states amt to collect- the basic plus the extra 600 til end of July then basic after that- if hours go up and you exceed the amt then it doesn’t qualify- so better to have just under the amount to qualify!

But agreed the LOA seems very tenuous.

Anyone call the PRSC to get more understanding?

Yes, I did. I told them start to finish the whole situation. But each time they told me they can’t be liable and they cannot guarantee that I will be eligible. Each time I worded it more specifically, but they seemed really scared to tell me if I’m eligible or not. It was the weirdest thing because in the back of my mind I was thinking, “BUT THATS WHY IM CALLING YOU. I THOUGHT YOU’D BE ABLE TO GIVE ME AN ANSWER. YOU WORK HERE!” I called 3 separate times, but each one went the same.

So, I’m really not sure. I want to take the LOA, but that means risking it all on applying for unemployment or finding another job in the meantime.

I’ll keep y’all updated, but so far no progress on eligibility information.

Exactly the same scenario and thoughts! Thx for your update!

Trying to find answers but not finding them at all. Will try to get through to the local employment # tomorrow..

if in fact a leave of absence is same as a furlough- it might be a positive. Also that we’re being told which we get after our preference is stated so it’s as if we are ‘given’ the leave, not choosing exactly. So involuntary might hold up.

This article gave me that thought:

https://www.sapling.com/8647284/can-unemployment-im-leave-absence

Leave of Absence/Furlough vs. Layoff

“If you've been laid off from your job, this means that your employer ended your position. But if you're furloughed, this means that you're on a temporary leave of absence and will return to your job at some point.

Because of recent COVID-19 legislation, anyone who is on a leave of absence because of the coronavirus is eligible for unemployment insurance. This is in contrast to pre-coronavirus eligibility when some states may not provide unemployment benefits to furloughed workers.”

Not sure how reliable the source is!
