What are your guys managers and SSVs like? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Critical50
I first worked for this company about 4 years ago. My manager was an active part of operations. He was great. He had some flaws, but overall a great manager.

The SSVs were a..interesting collection of people. We had a 28 yo pretty boy who was really friendly. He'd tell Dad jokes a lot. One who was a cunt. One who was cool but wouldnt do much. Mostly the bare minimum, and even laugh and brag about. Another one would come in hungover a lot. The absolute WORST of the bunch. Mid rush hour, she stood next to me at the register playing Pokemon GO.

Now at my new store, it seems to run pretty well. For the most part. Could also be that we're very low volume. Low volume = less stress = less chance for fuckups. But my new manager seems to just..not do anything. Everytime I see her shes on her computer.

The SSVs are pretty great. Most of them do their job, except one. Hes often in the back, saying hes doing stuff. I'll see him restocking the fridges..all shift. I hardly ever actually see him on the floor with us. Just about everyone hates him. Theres a lot of internal drama between the 4 of them.

My store is a cafe store and we're moving to Drive Thru, so Im at a new DT store that recently opened. Only here for a week for training. And again, the SM and ASM have done nothing but sitting down and talking while on their computer. They're fairly nice people, but what the hell happened? Is being a SM a deskjob now?

Definitely got a lot of shifts that will cut corners. Don’t do temps so they don’t catch when a fridge/freezer is out of temp or not even on. Don’t count deposits so we get emails about shorting the bank or giving them too much money. Don’t count milks or inventory correctly so we either get too little or too much of something in the next order. Don’t rotate and toss expired food and milk so we end up selling old milk and food for days.

You’d think the corners are cut so they can spend more time cleaning and stocking on the floor, but visual evidence concludes that doesn’t happen either.

I think the main difference between a good and a bad shift is one who can solve a problem or even recognize when one exists and find the resources to resolve it. There are a few shifts who have complained about the safe being broken and won’t close so they leave the money out when what really happened in the door handle got turned to the locked position and the “locking spoke” things popped up so you couldn’t close the door. All you have to do is type your numbers back in and turn the handle to the open position. You know, stuff like that.

My SM is great! She is very organized and isn’t afraid to jump in and help us when we need it. She also helps the SSV’s with their work. Just the other day she said “hey, SSV, I see you’re busy with customers so I started the food count for you”. She will help get us ice a lot or come in and brew coffees if needed when she steps behind the counter. My SSV’s are usually pretty good. There is one who I don’t care for but she’s a good worker. I dislike how she always puts me in the same position, window. She also always puts certain people in certain spots even if they’re not the best at those spots, like one girl who sucks at bar is always put there. All the other SSV’s always ask me “hey, Anon, where do you want to be today?” Or “hey, would you rather do bar or drive thru?”. All of my SSV’s are genuine as people though, and when I see stories of them yelling at their employees and putting them down, it makes me happy that mine would never do that

I believe an SM only has to schedule themselves on the floor for a total of 15 hours a week. The rest is non coverage for admin, partner conversations, shift meetings, conference calls, etc...

SMs have a lot more admin work now than they did few years ago. They re-did SM approach and gave SMs more admin labor.

My SM is a great person, but needs some work when it comes to actually being a manager. She spends a lot of time on her computer as well and RARELY, if ever, is actually on the floor with us. Now my SSVs are wonderful. I have no complaints about them!!

My first SM was replaced by one of these people, and was why I left. But not just because she didnt do anything, we were running out of shit left and right. We even ran out of toilet paper. Thankfully no one needed to wipe... Or just didnt say anything. She pissed everyone off.

I dont understand what exactly it is that they're doing. How many urgent things is there to do on their computer?

Its just starting to feel much like we're doing all the work. Like I wouldnt even want to bar with my manager because shes kinda slow. But this is my SM? My first SM was like having 2 people on bar. Having her on bar is like having a new person you can tell will do great if you give them time.

My first store was interesting. my old manager would bully people and allow bullying. She'd pick someone that day, when she did work to beat up on. She'd blame people for our poor customer connections. One of our shifts, who worked for Starbucks for 5 years loved to bully people. We lost 12 people because of her. Other shifts were fine.

My new store. Manager is great. He's a team player. Shifts are mixed. Most are great, some cut corners. But in general, it's a great store.
