I’ve only seen a couple posts about the three options that Starbuck’s is giving its’ employees, but they’ve all been negative and make it seem like Starbucks is being unreasonable. I would just like to give an opposed opinion about the company that we work for and help shed some bright light on what they’re doing.
First, Starbucks doesn’t have to do anything for us. They didn’t have to give us CAT pay, they didn’t have to provide a $3 pay increase during lockdown and possible shutdowns of stores, and they don’t have to give employees any options right now. Starbucks could opt to fire the employees they don’t need and operate with less employees regardless.
In contrast to this, Starbucks has decided to present three preferences to their partners: The first one, to keep working like most of us have been. Yes, this creates the possibility of contact with Covid, no it won’t include a $3 pay increase, and yes it ends a period of maximum safety during this time. However, Starbucks is keeping policies in place to keep us as safe as they can while accepting that some exposure is going to happen. The second, to take an unpaid leave of absence. This almost completely removes the chance of infection, but it also removes a source of income. The benefit to this option, is that Starbucks has guaranteed current benefits to employees who choose this preference through the duration of their leave. This allows people who may not need the income from Starbucks to keep important benefits while staying safe from possible infection. The third, to take a severance package and leave Starbucks. Some people see this preference as a slap in the face. But in reality, Starbucks isn’t required to give any sort of package to anyone. They could choose to fire any unneeded employees and they would be completely justified in doing that. The benefit of this preference, is the severance package. The con is that you would no longer have a job.
Whatever preference suits your needs the best, you are able to take.
I think that the most important thing to remember through this time is that Starbucks, in its simplest form, is a business that has to make a profit in order to keep paying us and giving us benefits. Starbucks spent Billions, and I would like to repeat that, Billions of dollars paying its’ employees while they didn’t work. They’ve spent Billions of dollars giving thousands of employees a $3 increase in pay since February. They have continued to put their partners first throughout the COVID pandemic and are continuing to operate in the safest ways while they start to revamp business and try and fill in the hole that they made in their budget.
I’m not disagreeing that each and every one of us deserves more, but don’t refuse to recognize that Starbucks has done more for us than they had to, more for us than most employers could do, and they’ve continued to keep us employees the safest that they can while opening up operations slowly.

Don’t forget on second and third options most could still claim unemployment benefits ! This is what baristas have asked for.
Trump_Rim_Job1 points3y ago
True, but would you really like to file unemployment in states that are super slow in paying anything, such as Florida and California?

Defending Starbucks bc it's a company/business/corporation is archaic and simplistic. It doesn't help anyone to point it out.
Kind of takes away from people's real feelings of concern and worry.

OP's opinion is as valid as yours.

Everyone should really check the partner hub and read the fine print on the partner preferences (it’s under COVID resources). There’s a lot of good information to help make your decision.
Highlights for option 1: Business as usual. Your hours may be cut. Your store labor may be cut. Regular pay, but no guarantee of regular hours. Your benefits are protected until October.
Highlight for option 2: Unpaid LOA through Sept. 30. Your manager can “ask” you to come back at any time– if you refuse, it will be considered voluntary separation. While on LOA you ARE allowed to apply for unemployment, or even seek alternate work (yes– you can be officially employed by another company and it will not impact your status at Bux). While on leave you are still eligible for food, drink, and coffee markouts. Starbucks will pay your portion of health insurance if you have Starbucks-issued health care. You receive 20 benefit hours per week. The minimum working hours to qualify for health insurance/SCAP has been reduced to 450. You are guaranteed a a return to your position, but possibly at a different store.
Highlight for option 3: A severance package of 60/84 hours (depending on title), paid out vacation hours, paid out scheduled hours. You will be eligible for rehire. You forfeit any unvested stock. It will be cited as “involuntary separation,” so you can qualify for unemployment. If you have Starbucks-issued health insurance, you will be routed to COBRA for different insurance options. If you are SCAP, Starbucks will still pay for the current session, but future sessions will no longer be paid for by Starbucks.
Other info: It seems you can’t change your mind. If you keep working, or take the leave, but then decide to quit– it will be considered voluntary separation. You do not get a severance package, and you will be ineligible for unemployment.

I completely agree with you on everything you said. Starbucks has really done a lot for their partners. My fear mostly comes from the fact that although we can choose our preference, ultimately it’s up to our SMs to decide what happens next. My SM even said it wasn’t really a choice. The SM at the store I’m currently working at lied saying they have until tomorrow to choose. There is so much misinformation going around in addition to the fact most people don’t know because SMs are keeping people in the dark. Wild times right now.
Sbuxfacts3 points3y ago
Agreed. The misinformation is rampant and ridiculous. If you have any specific questions, I'd be happy to help answer them for you, but you shouldn't trust me either. Go o. The Partner Hub and grab the documents about this stuff. It's entitled: Partner Care Plan Preferences and it's 12pgs long.

Thank you for adding some positivity.

Agreed and couldn't have said it better myself, this whole situation sucks but it's out of our control and everyone, including Starbucks, is doing the best we can to make the situation hurt less. Lets spread more positivity and kindness, thats what we all really need.

Could not agree more, Ive noticed a trend of people being so negative in this sub while forgetting that most companies wouldnt do even half Stabucks has been doing
