Racist coworkers, complicit manager, searching for voices of color to speak their truth (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Tv2tran
TLDR: In response to my complicit to white supremacy manager and racist coworkers, I'm in search of partners of colors and allies to voice their truth so I can compile a list of statements regarding racism, microaggressions, and discrimination seen in the workplace (in Minnesota and beyond!). This is going straight to my DM and also cc'ing corporate since I'm tired of having to deal with ignorant and racist folks everyday.

Hey everyone! This is a bit of a heavier topic compared to some of the normal and focuses a lot racism and discrimination that's been happening now. I'm in the Twin Cities and with how Black Lives Matter has been fought for, my store relatively had most of us (PoCs and white allies) in support of everything that has happened.

In the last week and a half, it's been very clear to many partners/people of color (PoC) that some of our white shift leaders were being blatantly or trying to blanket their racism. I ended up in a fight with a shift supervisor when I asked them to check their privilege when they asked me to stop talking about BLM since they didn't want to here. They wanted to place their burden of their mental health, white fragility, and have me and other PoCs educate them, but only when they were interested about BLM.

Yesterday I created a doc for race and racism training that's a plan of action for Starbucks that I've sent to my DM, my manager, and corporate. Although my DM (a PoC) was open and supportive, my manager had decided that it was not their role to discipline the shifts or partners that have been racist or abused their authority on others.

I'm currently in the works of compiling as many stories as possible from partners of color and allies regarding racism and discrimination. I'm searching for partners of color (and allies!) that have or are currently working for the company. I would like to hear about your experiences or wittnessing racism, microaggressions, ignorance, catering to white fragility, and white supremacy and so on. This involves yourself, among coworkers, and to customers.

Please feel free to dm me or comment down below! I would love a chance to chat with you to help fight my racist coworkers, complicit manager, and advocate for a major change in educating partners and leadership about race and racism for a more inclusive and safe workplace.

Thank you!

I've seen starbucks (and many other large corporations go out of their way to try to have positive relationships with cops. I've always thought of this as a kind of bribery to get the cops to do their jobs.

Having a positive relationship with police is a good thing, but we shouldn't have to give them free coffee to get faster response times when we call the cops. They need to do their part and their job to build a positive relationship with the community. The fact that too many police departments and cops don't understand this is a big part of why we have systemic racism in our police.

That's a good point, I had a chance to speak to some midwest corporate folks last week and when asked about cop partnerships they froze up.

I think there are other factors that have lead to police violence but police should be held accountable to be able to their jobs efficiently (since that's what they're paid for).
