The dress code is stupid. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by vellamour
[vent]

I’m a SS and I am so sick of being told to “coach” our partners about dress code when what they are wearing is BARELY out of dress code. One of my baristas was wearing black jeans with a thin red stripe down the leg. It was about an inch thick and was like embroidered on. Anyway, my SM coached her about it, and then proceeded to tell me that I need to get better about coaching our baristas about dress code. This happens all the time at our store.

There are also some things that are obviously out of dress code, like white or grey shoes, or shirts with an accent color outside of the scheme, that I think is so stupid to enforce. The baristas are wearing nonslip shoes! Who cares if they are white! Or they’re shirt has pink sleeves but is otherwise in dress code, why am I going to “coach” them about it. I just feel like it’s a waste of my time when my SM should be emphasizing coaching about more important things like shaking drinks or FIFO.

I would honestly rather sbux change the rules to be more lenient (remember when they just did that and nothing changed? 🙄) or create a very strict uniform that’s black pants, black branded polo, and nonslip shoes. It’s just so frustrating when the company wants to pretend to be fun and hip but also has the worst color palette and stupidest rules. I’m also sick of nitpicking our partners constantly about tiny details on their clothes that are “out of dresscode”.
blondiebarista 102 points 3y ago
Yes! If you’re going to cut our hours and give us more work the least they can do for us is let us be comfortable. I can understand the safety part that is required but being able to wear leggings or t shirts would make such a difference in comfort.
vellamour [OP] 40 points 3y ago
Agreed. Our baristas hardly ever break the functional part of dress code (no leggings, low cut shirts, short skirts, etc), but it’s always tiny details we’re told to nitpick to no end! Like geez if you can’t handle a red stripe, then make us a wear a uniform!
suenologia 53 points 3y ago
then provide* us with a uniform lmao if they wanna be so annoying about it they can talk with their wallets

EDIT: before someone gets mad at me this is 100% a joke
vellamour [OP] 27 points 3y ago
I 100% agree and I’m not joking :)
sleepythyme07 9 points 3y ago
T shirts are allowed per the new dress code! not saying that makes a huge difference in comfort level because I would die to wear leggings, but it at least makes it easier on the side of tops.
alerollerblades 1 points 3y ago
what’s upsetting is when they provide us with shirts, they’re always t-shirts yet we can’t wear our own t-shirts that are within the dress code

miniinovaa 87 points 3y ago
The dress code is oddly specific but also very vague lol
KingDuck7 21 points 3y ago
perfect way to describe it tbh. when i first started i was excited looking at the color pallete but i found out that its actually pretty odd
Pheebers713 70 points 3y ago
One of the most satisfying moments of my time at Starbucks was when I came in wearing a white shirt with birds on, the birds were a khaki/brown color so technically all the colors were in dress code. But it was obviously considered a distracting pattern. My SM talked to me about it and I told her I won’t wear it again. Not even 5 mins later while my SM was ringing up a regular, the regular saw me and commented how she loved the shirt. I looked my SM dead in the eye and said “see customers like my shirt, I should be allowed to wear it.” My SM obviously shot me daggers and we explained it was out of dress code to the regular who thought it was funny.

Also for reference my SM and I are friends outside of work. I’m able to get away with saying stuff like this a lot. So I didn’t get in trouble.
veyetalz 52 points 3y ago
tbh i’ve been w/ the siren for about 1.5 years now and have showed up IN dress code a handful of times and have never been “coached” at.

guess i got lucky w/ my ss’s & sm.
vellamour [OP] 19 points 3y ago
It’s one thing if you’re wearing a too short skirt, bright af colors, or yoga pants, but most of the time our Sm wants us to coach people on tiny things like our prints or whatever that it isn’t even productive. It just makes the baristas resent us SS and the SM
veyetalz 4 points 3y ago
completely agree.
xsupermonkeyboyx 14 points 3y ago
I guess I got lucky too cause I was never even “taught” dress code and I’ve never heard of anyone getting dress code. The reason I put taught in “” was because it was obviously in the online training I skimmed through. I guess it also helps that most of my wardrobe is in compliance with the dress code.
EspressoPatr0num 28 points 3y ago
I had an SM who would go to war with a partner who wore red socks. Socks. Maybe visible by a quarter of an inch after the hem of his pants. And she wore a wrist watch every day. 🤔
lilcox1419 4 points 3y ago
We have a partner who wears red socks as his splash of color and he hasn’t had a problem with it. Maybe that SM is jealous of your buddy’s mad style?
DeliOck 24 points 3y ago
got told not to wear white shirts to work
ilovebrandonj 38 points 3y ago
white has literally always been in dress code what the heck
analiseh18 20 points 3y ago
wtf i thought that was just a recommendation bc of spills and such
DeliOck 10 points 3y ago
Thought the same shit too
howdudo 12 points 3y ago
When I got hired I was handed an infographic about the dress code. Under approved colors for tops white was 100% definitely listed as approved. Whyy is it different for you guys

Found it:

This is the new dress code, to be fair. The old one was a $1 that outlined exactly what types of tops and bottoms you could wear (for example any t-shirts that weren't issued for a promotion were banned outright), and even outlined examples of acceptable and unacceptable patterns. However, it left things *just* vague enough with regards to patterns to be a hassle for everyone.

I always say there are worse things to worry and deal with than dress code! Heck, I'm just glad partners show up for their shift lol
lizeken 17 points 3y ago
For the most part my store doesn’t get too mad about dress code violations because as long as you know you’re not supposed to wear something they don’t really care. I wore leggings once bc I hadn’t done laundry and they were like well Yknow like it’s not dress code but whatevs. Besides, are they gonna send people home to change???
vellamour [OP] 20 points 3y ago
My manager wants us to send people home to change. I don’t think any SS in their right mind would actually follow through on that.
lizeken 14 points 3y ago
Especially with hour and labor cuts like wtf
Ithaca_Alexandria 9 points 3y ago
I wish. My manager sent me home because my dress was too short and I was wearing skin colored nylons. I was only there for 6 hours, so I didn't take a lunch that day.

She also likes to lead with a compliment to tell you your out of dress code as well, so now I worry every time she gives me an actual one since she sent me home.

Have other people been out of dress code more than me? Yup especially with not slip shoes, but they're her favorite. It's ridiculous.

Edit: forgot, I'm a SSV as well with no prior issues.
randomyucky 7 points 3y ago
If we are out of dress code we get told to go home and change and come back and if we dont come back, its marked as a no call no show
vellamour [OP] 4 points 3y ago
That’s what my SM wants to do but right now everyone is so jaded with our store, and the amount of nitpicking for dress code we are supposed to coach on, I can see many baristas not coming in, and then us being short staffed. Also, our store isn’t having labor cuts. We are already short staffed.
FutureKnightMaybe 14 points 3y ago
And here I am sitting in the break room at my licensed store in all black- shoes, slacks, polo, and hat with my apron, all not having been washed in 10 days 😳
vellamour [OP] 7 points 3y ago
Hahahaha. I’ve worked at cafes with strict dress codes like that and honestly it’s so much easier to navigate when your shirts are provided and you can only wear black or khaki pants
kqs13 12 points 3y ago
Honestly sometimes I wish we would go back to the dress code where it was only black and khaki pants and black shirts, it is so much easier! I dont mind the dress code now of course, but there would be less issues if it was just more clear.
cyan_reynolds 11 points 3y ago
I literally can't wear most of my clothes to work because of how strict the dress code is. And I'm not spending tons of money on clothes just for work. It's so frustrating.
pretiburdi 8 points 3y ago
The only thing that drives me nuts is hoodies. If i could wear hoodies you know I would be so if I can't, no one can xD everything else I don't care about unless they're a butthole
NOTcreative- 7 points 3y ago
It wasn’t long ago that black or khaki pants with black polo was required. They changed it to neutral colors and jeans allowed along with plain t-shirts 5-6 years ago. Neutral colors isn’t that bad of a pallet to work with and is easy enough that everyone has it in their wardrobe. The most recent update was more around piercings and such. but level of dress code enforcement varies manager to manager, dm to dm. The dress code is there for standards and not clash with colors and to be matching. Do you think the baristas outside of work would go out without color coordinating their outfits? Pants the color of our apron with a pink shirt? I just think it’s something silly to get worked up about but also go crazy and overly enforce.
marsrants 7 points 3y ago
Maybe it's your district or sm's project? I know dms sometimes ride the sm or asm to show that they are working on something. Either way it's ridiculous thing to focus on :(.
meowmix221 6 points 3y ago
today our SM sent someone home to change his shirt with a "loud pattern" then when he got back to work he got "coached" on time and attendance.

\*\* side note

does anyone else keep hearing "this is an at will employer, if you dont like it you can leave"

Im slowly but surely becoming not proud to be a partner
PompadourPrincess 5 points 3y ago
my favorite is not being allowed to wear promotional shirts the company gave us because they arent in the color scheme. like what?
Kaywin 3 points 3y ago
The one that bugs me is not being allowed to wear the promotional shirts outside the specified dates. I didn’t even know there were specified dates until I moved stores and my new SM actually cared. As long as it’s not obviously time-sensitive (eg a holiday shirt in March,) who cares?
violentfemme17 5 points 3y ago
I always think the dress code is stupid but enforcing it now seems so much worse. Like, people are dying? Can you eat a dick for a second? If I have to wear a mask at work no one should give an utter fuck about what color shirt I’m wearing.
RoseRed98 5 points 3y ago
Lol I’m a shift and I honestly couldn’t care less about the dress code. Though I do work with people that actually have common sense and don’t push what’s acceptable. I like wearing color and when I’m happy and feeling good about myself it helps with connecting with customers. When you’ve got a relaxed, happy environment everyone is more at ease and business does better.
tang0foxtr0t 5 points 3y ago
Got hired to be trained at one store end of October while in school. Bought a couple of things within dress code from a cheap store, just to make sure I always had something to wear if I didn't have time to do laundry at school. It was getting cold, and I go to school in the city and have to walk to work, so I mostly got long sleeved things/sweaters. After Thanksgiving, got transferred to my new store, which was a reserve store, and was told the dress code was different and I'd have to wear collared, button-up shirts. Only had 1 or 2 in my closet within dress code. Spent all of winter break trying to find more long sleeve collared, button-ups. Had a bitch of a time, and dropped another \~$80 doing so. Got sent home from school in March. Didn't start working again until mid-May, when it's now quite warm, and I can drive to work. Now I'm spending even more money to buy some short sleeve tops within dress code so I'm not overheating. Feels kind of ridiculous at this point, but I'm working 5 days in a row this week and haven't really had time to do laundry, so I had to wear a bordering on dress code appropriate dress today, since all my jeans are in the wash. Luckily my SM is pretty chill, but she has been reminding us about dress code recently since the cafe opened back up.
JCaligirl420 2 points 3y ago
Walmart has some shirts for like $5 in dress code, I didn’t do laundry week before last and needed a shirt. I got most of mine when I first started at Old Navy good luck!
luckybean9 5 points 3y ago
I was genuinely hoping that when the cafes were closed we could get away with wearing leggings as long as they were thicker but no such luck :( it’d be cool if we could wear bright colors sometimes Bc all the grey and black really dampens my mood lol
snidejenner 2 points 3y ago
Really? Your SM was still super strict about dress code? I know baristas as my old store were wearing booty shorts and sweatpants.
luckybean9 1 points 3y ago
This comment hurt my soul 😭😭😭 I’m so jealous of that, I literally was opening from 3am to 1pm in a hot ass store with Skelton crew sweating my leg hair off just fantasizing about the second I could rip my jeans off
RegularFrappuccino 4 points 3y ago
Some sms just like to feel powerful and always coach. It was effing annoying
Oculument 4 points 3y ago
"Partners" lol
cush4 3 points 3y ago
Worst part of a shifts job is checking dress code of an adult. I hate it and get criticized by both Baristas and Store Manager for not noticing and coaching. But i grew up having to wear catholic school uniform attire so I’ve never been an opinionated dress style individual. its easy for me to be in uniform not easy to stalk other partners ability to stay in dress code. I’m ok with that lol
colonade17 3 points 3y ago
I'm glad that I have a SM and DM that looks at dress code more holistically. Does the partner look presentable and professional? would a customer look at them and understand that they work here? If it's yes to both questions, minor technical violations aren't a big deal.
JCaligirl420 3 points 3y ago
Our DM will come in dresses in a tank top blouse, sandals, one time she was in a sleeveless jumper, like she is never in dress code, and the colors are never the colors in our palette.
raptoraptorr 3 points 3y ago
i honestly don’t care when my managers get onto me about dress code. i don’t own any of the “dress code” clothes and don’t get paid enough to go out and get a whole new wardrobe for work clothes. so i let them continue to waste their breath. i show up in a shirt literally with the Starbucks logo on it or one of the old promo shirts and get bitched at like..... ok anyways let me go make all the prep morning crew didn’t make and close the entire store in the 4 hours I’m scheduled for. fuck right off with that dress code shit
spongepants19 3 points 3y ago
Can we talk about how uncomfortable the dress code is for women? I have heard weird conversations about seeing bra straps before and it makes me furious. Maybe I just won’t even wear one in the first place and see how they like that
ocarina_of_cats 2 points 3y ago
I’ve actually had that conversation! My SM didn’t have a problem with it but was forced to talk to me about it because my DM (who is a woman) apparently thought it was unacceptable that you could ever so slightly see them. I was livid.
Kaywin 3 points 3y ago
Maybe it’s a regional/generational thing? I have a friend in her 30’s who is anal about bra straps showing, and so is my 60-something stepmom, but nobody I know in their 20’s cares much unless they are, like, falling down your arms because the garment doesn’t fit.

Shoutout to abrathatfits: If your bra straps are falling down /r/abrathatfits is your friend
spongepants19 1 points 3y ago
I guess so. The problem is I like to wear sports bras and they are so chunky they are hard to hide. But in the dress code it says no visible undergarments so I understand, I just think bra straps shouldn’t matter
Kaywin 2 points 3y ago
I definitely feel like sports bras should be excepted from the rule, they hardly look much different from a tank top strap if they're visible that way. :\ That sucks.
catmos 3 points 3y ago
Back when I was an SS I used to wear thick black leggings with a black t-shirt that covered my butt. I was the closing shift so I was doing tons of deep cleaning so honestly fuck getting my expensive jeans disgusting and ripped while on the floor cleaning fridges out and picking up dirty mats.
alo-san 3 points 3y ago
Damn honestly do we work at the same store bc my SM is sooooooo ANNOYING AND ANAL about the stupid dress code omg. Literally ANY LITTLE THING is a problem and a potential write up from her smh
She also would rather send people home to change (and waste a whole hour) rather than brush it off smh
vellamour [OP] 2 points 3y ago
We might 👀👀
Tangofett4 2 points 3y ago
I'm a shift as well, and nobody at our store enforces it at all.
I couldn't bring myself to be the one to tell a barista he couldn't wear a BLM shirt
Tarable-03 2 points 3y ago
Hey your out of dress code! Get new clothes! Also here's less hours and all the stores are crowded with people buying things they don't need so they can sit at home and wear it. Just wear one of the oh so efficient face masks we provide.
Kaywin 2 points 3y ago
Periodically my SS’s at my store will come at me with some comment about dress code - I’m in dress code 99.9% of the time with the exception of socks and it seems painfully obvious to me that our SM coached them to coach us on dresscode, the way they talk to me about it seems almost more like they’re reminding themselves they were supposed to check, and they pretty much never find anything wrong with what I’m wearing. Looking around the store I’ve noticed a coworker out of dress code like 1 time, so it seems like she was just looking to give them something to practice coaching with. In any event it seemed like a waste of the SS’s time and I felt bad for them because it felt to me like they were getting nit picked for not coaching us enough. Or something.
soda_rain 2 points 3y ago
I’m tired of PRSC didn’t respond to my request for Sedgwick claim ID for unemployment after I, a legally disabled employee, was terminated while involuntarily hospitalized after my fam filed a missing persons report and my DM reversed my termination and put me on personal leave rather than FMLA medical leave of absence.
siriushendrix 2 points 3y ago
That moment your SM, DM, and RM don’t care about all the pins you have on your apron none of which have anything to do with Starbucks while also wearing converse and colorful socks. They told me I have flair (office space reference????)
Critical50 2 points 3y ago
What annoys me is they dont allow certain colors. Like purple. Why?

I can understand the no graphic designs and such. If that was allowed, I feel like we'd have a lot of issues with people finding some of our clothing offensive.

I remember when I was first hired and we were still allowed to put personal pins on our hats and stuff. Then just suddenly "no more of that".

Then they started wondering why all I wore was black polo and black pants. I got so tired of random nitpicks about dress code. FOH with your pretend freedom. The dress code is so restricted, and being a guy with not that big of a fashion sense I feel like I barely have any options.
Kaywin 2 points 3y ago
You know, *knock on wood* I’ve never been coached on my personal pins, and the customers compliment me on them all the time. I honestly was unaware it wasn’t technically dress code until the last weekly update, where it was outlined specifically in reference to people wanting to wear BLM pins. I understand their reasoning but I’m gonna raise hell if they make me ditch my pronoun and Pride pins >:|
TheWallTheVeil 2 points 3y ago
Black lululemons look just as nice on all the baristas as black dress pants do and neither can withstand boiling water. But the dress pants are allowed and the lulu's aren't
MonstrousGiggling 2 points 3y ago
" company wants to pretend to be fun and hip but also has the worst color palette "

Duuude why can't I wear a pink polo??? Or my pink corduroy shorts? It's funny because they claim to make the color palette easily accessible but any black shirt I have has some gruesome graphic on it or something trippy.

Curious how do they want you to actually "coach" them? Like...coach just seems like such a serious word for telling someone to not wear that next time lol
vellamour [OP] 5 points 3y ago
This is what my SM wants me to do to “coach” (coach is in quotes because anytime we’re supposed to correct something with our baristas, my SM calls it “coaching”)

Barista has red stripe on pants. I’m supposed to instantly notice when they walk in. I say “Hi, just want to let you know your pants are out of dress code. This is the 2nd time you’ve been wearing them, so I’m going to ask you to go home and change.” And they do. Or if they don’t go home and change or it’s their first offense, I tell them to not wear the pants next time and show them the dress code pdf online or whatever (we used to have it printed out but it’s long gone by now).

And basically our SM also tells them about how they are out of dresscode when she comes in at 8am, and if the barista doesn’t say “yeah I know, shift already told me” us shifts ALSO get coached about how we aren’t coaching! That’s what happened today, but I didn’t coach on the pants because I didn’t think a stripe mattered if the majority of the pants were black.
meester_bravo 2 points 3y ago
I always wear a short sleeve button-up in various prints (even some not in the color pallet). I usually don’t get told anything, but I think that’s partly because I’m a partner who goes in every day and does their job to the their best ability, and partly because I can charm my way out of it. I was only told once by a SS (who wears jeans and a black polo EVERY day and isn’t known for her hospitality) that I was out of dress code, and I told her “I can’t flirt with customers to get tips wearing the same black polo and pair of jeans everyday”, and she hasn’t told me anything since. 🤷🏽‍♂️ lmao
Alliiicatttt 2 points 3y ago
Preach it sister! (Or brother?) Also an ss and that sounds absolutely ridiculous! I hate to coach on those little things. I mean a reminder like hey that’s not actually dress code is appropriate there, but still annoying!
vellamour [OP] 4 points 3y ago
(Sister :)) It wouldn’t bug me if it was about clothes that were way out of dress code like leggings, ripped jeans or miniskirts but a red stripe? Really? What customer is gonna see that anyway?
official_koda_ 1 points 3y ago
You would think out of any company, Starbucks wouldn’t have a specific dress code saying what colors you can wear.
snidejenner 1 points 3y ago
I remember one time in was wearing a black and white striped T-shirt and I had worn it literally hundreds if times because one of my SSVs told me I couldnt wear it anymore because it was a T-shirt? But it was large and flowy so it looked more like a "blouse"

I kept on wearing it, especially around my SM and my SM said absolutely nothing to me.
drinkliquidclocks 1 points 3y ago
I don't think you need to stop enforcing dress code to start enforcing the other things. Both is good. By agreeing to work for a company you're agreeing to their dress code. This is pretty elementary stuff...
theraddestlad 1 points 3y ago
I'm going in for orientation on Thursday. Is it ok to wear black jeans with uniform rips in the knees? They aren't big- just straight across.
coffeeslinger2000 6 points 3y ago
I would say no. Opt for jeans without rips
jess-kaa 1 points 3y ago
Whaaaat, my sm lets us wear leggings. She’s super chill about the dress code, the only time she gets strict is when it’s around time for inspections.
sonicleeway 1 points 3y ago
The problem with this is, what you think is a minor problem and not terribly far from dress code might be a big deal to the next ss/sfm and vice versa. Also, dress code used to be a black polo and khakis and black non slips. We weren't allowed to show our tattoos or have piercings besides one ear stud. Please, let us never wish for that.

I do agree whole heartedly on fifoing and shaking btw
vellamour [OP] 3 points 3y ago
I guess I don’t understand why a red stripe on otherwise fine pants is a big deal. The things we’re supposed to point out do not functionally inhibit the barista doing their job, is inappropriate, or wildly clashing with our aprons. Telling someone they have to go buy a black version of their shoes because white shoes just “aren’t in the color palette” or sending someone home to change because their pants have a red stripe down the seam, seems a little excessive to me, and that’s what I find annoying.
soraah97 1 points 3y ago
All stores in Portugal have a strict dress code.
Starbucks polo + black pants + black shoes
No piercings.
Thats it 🤷‍♀️
zorbss_ -1 points 3y ago
Idc idc, if I’m working a 6+ hour shift, I’m wearing leggings because who is about to wear jeans and I’m standing the entire time!!! And then I’m on bar working like a Hebrew slave. No ma’am no Pam. Not me.
