venti rant: opening the cafes was a stupid decision, and not just for health reasons (self.starbucksbaristas)

so when we were only open for mobile orders and order at the door, one of the registers was moved right up to the door. the person on door would be in charge of handing out drinks and taking orders. it worked really well. but now that customers are allowed to come into the cafe, it’s all gone to shit.

first off, we’ve moved the register back so it’s about 3/4 of the way down the bar, and past where the other register is that we’re not using. people keep thinking that’s where they order, instead of the one behind the plexiglass that the arrows on the floor are clearly pointing you to.

second, with labor cuts, middle of the day to close we only have about 4 people working, including the SSV. they have their duties, one of the baristas is breaking down stations, one is at the door, leaving only one to make the drinks. my SM keeps telling us that the barista should be the one to stop everything they’re doing to go around the bar and take the order, then go back to the bar, wash their hands, and go back to making the drinks. she doesn’t want the door person to run back to take the orders because “then anybody can just walk in” but like what does that matter? if we’re letting people in, we’re letting them in. and we’re never getting more than 4 customers in at the same time so it’s not even a problem with keeping the number of customers down. and the person at the door has nothing to do 75% of the time anyways. especially in the last 30 minutes. even if there’s 2 baristas working on drinks and 12 drinks to make she still wants one of us to take the cafe orders.

third, we’re supposed to prioritize the cafe orders. so once the barista gets back behind the bar, they have to ignore the 5 mobile orders that came in and start working on the cafe order instead. which is fine, unless another customer comes in to order. or the printer doesn’t jam.

basically i just think it was ridiculous to move the register back and make it way more difficult for everyone. having cafe orders coming in and having mobile orders still coming in like crazy is making it SO MUCH HARDER than when people could just order at the door. mobile order customers get annoyed when it takes way longer to get their drinks because i have to focus on the cafe customer who just ordered 4 trenta drinks. if we could use the register at the bar i wouldn’t be that annoyed but this is fucking ridiculous.

When we reopened our lobby to grab-and-go we had to completely sacrifice both the handoff and concierge roles.

Our SM put up plexiglass at both the handoff station and the register. Then, we transitioned to having register partner guiding people as they walk in. Followed by the bar partner guiding them to the “waiting zone”. Then, out the appropriate exit door, as their order was complete.

It’s not perfect, you have to be careful not “bombard” the customer, and it requires a lot of “polite yelling” from across the cafe... but it solved our coverage issues.
