Customer is ALWAYS right 😬😬 (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by SunnyFlowers29
As a barista I’ve obviously had some crazy requests. Recently they have been like a venti iced chai filled with chai no milk no ice no room. Or a short white mocha no milk, no whip, only white chocolate w/ no room. Is this allowed? I know I need to ask my SM but I feel like the response will be, “yes, that’s okay, make the moment right.” But like we have to stop somewhere right? Today someone ordered an iced tall Carmel macchiato in a venti cup with extra 2%. I know we can do extra ice but extra milk? I feel like basically everything is allowed as long as they ask for it??

Definitely ask your SM. Mine would say definitely no to the chai and white mocha. For the caramel macchiato we would do the add dairy charge. They’re only getting one shot still but need to pay for the milk.

For the chai or WM if they got a splash of milk or water in it would it then be considered okay?
How do you ring in a dairy charge for regular milk? I swear I tried to do that on the POS today but because the drinks already made of 2% it wouldn’t let me charge. Would I just click a nondairy so it would charge the appropriate $.70 up charge ?

There’s a button that says “add dairy” and all it does it charge! So for drinks made with the milk if you press it it doesn’t charge you see do the add dairy button. I’m not sure about the chais. I know we don’t sell beverage components so you could always try to explain that if it’s worth it. I would get a shift to back me up and say no, but your SM has final say if they’ll allow it or not. It’s best to get the whole store on the same page on charging so customers stop pushing it.

If it were me, I’d charge them for multiple drinks.
“I’m sorry, it’s against our policy to sell components of our drinks or to go majorly past the beverage instructions. For something like all white mocha, I’d have to charge you for each extra pump or for multiple drinks with no milk in order to make up for the cost of giving you the base. Do you want that, or would you like to try something else?”

Bless your soul!! That button will now be in FULL effect I thought there was a button but I swear after the LOA from quarantine my brain went to mush and the customers have been ever so unruly! I will be asking my SM about the WM and Chais because I’ve seen it now on multiple occasions and I need everyone to be on the same page because having customers say “well they did it for me yesterday” is going to make my brain burst. 😓😓😓

My store would allow this type of behavior. My SM says “it doesn’t come out of your paycheck, and we need our connection scores to be high”. We have someone order a venti syrup cream Frappuccino, add all 3 refresher bases, 2 scoops of each berry inclusion , lemonade, 5 pumps LCS, 3 pumps of raspberry and put it in a trenta cup with a “venti and a tall scoop of ice in the blender”. It gets worse though. This girl is a former partner and to measure her refresher base portion, she wants us to take a shaker, put strawberry açaí to the tall base line, then rotate and add mango dragonfruit to the grande base line then add very berry to the venti base line. And she WILL complain if the portions aren’t correct. She even called our DM personally to complain on an SSV who told her we can’t do all the portioning

Whenever I've asked an SM about this, most of the time it's "as long as it's a reasonable request, and one drink fits in one cup, then it's fine".

However there are a few weird exceptions to this, like you're not supposed to do a venti iced latte in a trenta cup for extra ice.

My SM will allow customers to get iced lattes or mochas in a trenta cup with extra ice. Even the forbidden nitro in a venti with ice. So then when I tell the customer no it’s against policy and disturbs the nitrogen making it lose the effect, the customer goes, “your manager did it for me last time!” So I say we will do it this time but can’t continue and it happens all the time bc others allow it.

Yeah. There's no consistency, and no clear guiding principle for us to follow. And having SMs say to "make the moment right" means that one store may do one thing that another refuses to do, which leads to annoyed and confused customers.
