Serious question about Starbucks America and other companies (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by soraah97
Hi, im a partner from Europe and ive seen a lot of news about Starbucks banning employees from wearing BLM clothes and now changing and actually providing them tshirts and such.
My question is , do other companies in America been allowing their employees to wear them as well? If not, why was the issue only brought up with Starbucks?

This is an honest question as Im deeply confused.
Here we have a strict dress code , Starbucks polo and black pants. Ofc nobody would even consider to show up to work with their own clothes that arent in the dress code, just like all the other companies around here.

I’m doubtful other companies are allowing it. However starbucks likes to make a big show of how socially conscious & progressive they are so they looked extra hypocritical

Also our dress code isn’t as strict anymore here in the US.

Im unaware of other companies allowing their employees to wear anything other than dress code however what I will say is that Starbucks often boasts about being the woke company that stands with its partners and communities. The events that recently transpired has really awoken the general public to the human rights issue that America has been going through for forever (as a woc I can't more deeply express my hurt and thankfullness at the same time that it has taken so many deaths and such a dark history for people to finally hear and care about these issues). But, just saying you support black people is not enough. This is such a pressing time, racism, police brutality, and the system that we have been abiding to is not okay.

For Starbucks to be on the sidelines providing no action to support the black community in America and everywhere else while allowing partners to wear Pride gear that you have to purchase so they can make bank off their own employees is disgusting. Black lives (though much more pressing in recent times) is as much a political issue as Pride is and we have been allowed to show support to the LGBT+ community for quite a while now. That said, they are going to be providing us with BLM shirts some time soon I hear due to the recent media backlash.

Is there a fine line here between performative activism vs damage control here..? Starbucks is a good company and some stores are really community focused. At first I was told the company didn’t want employees to wear BLM merch to reduce customer backlash and take off the social pressure because the pressure of COVID is already enough for some. I thought this was considerate but maybe it is catering to white fragility. I just thought it isn’t better for Starbucks to be proactive versus just ignoring everyone on this and going about their day? Maybe I’m falling for it, idk. Maybe starbucks can also work to improve how much it donates to black community funds and other things down the line to better aid the movement?

The timing definitely made it seem like a backtrack to save face, but I doubt they had the shirt design made in so little time. I would like to think they planned to give us BLM shirts all along.

It could be to placate white fragility, or it could be because a corporate-sanctioned BLM shirt would alleviate baristas of responsibility if a customer gets pissed off. Starbucks shouldn’t give a shit about some racist opinions at all, but at least a company-wide statement makes it harder for customers to pick valid fights.
