EBay reseller RANT! (self.starbucksbaristas)

New poster here. I’ve been working at Starbucks for around 6 months now, and we’ve been doing really well in sales thanks to the pride cups. We had originally placed a limit on the cups of two units per household right after they came out to prevent resellers from buying them all up, and sales were going great! That is until two days ago. We had previously lifted this limit on the cups thinking “It’s been three weeks. If you didn’t buy them, that’s your problem”, and people could now buy as many as they wanted. Let’s just say that I will always have limits on the merchandise while I’m working from now on.

I was working the closing shift and this man comes in and starts looking at the merchandise. Totally normal, I thought. That was until he brought in a shopping cart and started filling it up with color changing cups. I had heard of those people who buy up all of a store’s merchandise and go price gouge it, and I was onto him as soon as he couldn’t hold what he was trying to purchase in his hands.

When it was all said and done, this man had bought 23 5 packs of color changing cups, giving me the biggest sale of my life, much to my dismay, given that those cups will be resold on eBay for ten times the price, and wouldn’t be going to actual customers.

So then I come into work today, and all of our merchandise is gone. The same man came in this morning before I came into work and had bought the rest of the color changing cups! And as if that wasn’t enough, some lady came in later and bought EVERYTHING ELSE WE HAD. So now we have a case of color changers and a case of bling tumblers left. And that’s it!

I hate that these types of people exist, just because it ruins the experience for everyone else, because now that these people have the merchandise, they control the prices, and our potential customers have to bend to these vultures’ wills to get these cups. Now that we have virtually no merchandise left, our sales are going to plummet over the next week, and customers now have to deal with these scumbags who’re gouging the prices on these plastic cups. Does this infuriate anyone else like it infuriates me?

TL:DR Scumbags bought all of my store’s cups and killed our sales as a result.

It’s just so selfish and greedy! To me they’re no better than a scammer. There should definitely be a limit, make it annoying for them so they have to go around to different stores to hoard all the cups

Exactly! And during a global crisis too! Apparently the man in question has done this before back when the matte black cups were really popular. He couldn’t sell them, and my manager wrote “No Returns” on his receipt, so the man broke all his cups and tried to return them as damaged! You CANNOT make this stuff up.

Holy shit did he end up getting a refund??
BachStrad007 [OP] 2 points 3y ago
Heck NO. My manager sent that jerk away with a cart full of useless matte black tumblers.

SUPPOSEDLY there is a starbucks task force that take down these posts etc but I've also heard that unless you're a barista there are like No consequences otherwise

Take down these reddit rants or take down eBay resellers?
pretiburdi 1 points 3y ago
lol my bad they take down resellers

One of the partners at my store who chose option 3 literally cleared the store of cups when they left. Very very annoying

You should only put out like 5 at a time and if someone asks for more ask them how many more and if it's really high say you only have 2. And then only restock more until those 5 are gone. The ppl who aren't reselling can't buy a shit ton but if ppl ask you can give it to them and have it on display for the ppl who actually want them. If that makes sense. Though you probably can't do this.
BachStrad007 [OP] 1 points 3y ago
We try to keep the displays relatively small, but I’m in a Tom Thumb Starbucks, so our stock can’t fit in our tiny storage closet. So we had boxes loose in the parlor over by the back room. Granted, the seating area is closed, so they should be safe, but this idiot just waltzed on back there and dug through all our crap.

It’s greedy, but it’s just reselling as a third party. Price gouging only applies to necessities like food and gas. People don’t need color changing cups to survive.
BachStrad007 [OP] 2 points 3y ago
That’s understandable, but it’s still scummy whether it’s essential or not. If people want these cups, then they shouldn’t have to go through these third parties to get them. They should be able to come to us and pay normal price. Plus, us selling to them makes them more likely to come back and buy more coffee from us. One person buying everything up just makes the buying process more annoying for everyone.
