Any tips on making hand-off ANY LESS BORING!?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by MemesandSpeech
So noticing how many partners have left the company, I know I might be put on hand-off a little more than before. My opinion, being on hand off is very BORING! You have to be isolated in a certain area and can't truly move around. Also trying to avoid making too much eye contact with customers is kinda hard. (Like you don't wanna look like a creeper while the person is in a corner waiting for the order for the past..minutes.)
With that being said, what are some ways to make being on hand-off ANY LESS BORING & How to engage in conversation with customers frankly waiting for their order.

Make a ridiculous comment that only makes you laugh or just do customer connections.

Any tips on how to connect with customers? The most I get small simple answers, now much of a convo convo

It’s hard to do it with every single customer, because many people just want their coffee but asking them about summer plans or just casual conversations like that. Often times you will get an awkward response but just keep on doing it, complement them if you don’t have anything else.

I tell jokes or riddles to customers to pass the time, I also ask them what their favorite drinks are, if they tried anything new during quarantine, etc. I mostly just try to create a good, lighthearted mood and hope I foster conversation amongst customers.

Obviously, customer connections help, but not everyone is down for that. I try to come up with pretty generic questions (how’s the day going, got any fun plans, stuff like that). Most times it’ll be generic answers, but sometimes it connects with stuff I’ve got going in, and conversation ensues
That’s usually 1 in ten though. I do a lot of singing to myself if the window is closed, or play little games based on the cars/drinks
