Demoted due to store not making enough money (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by sevgi_
Hey Partners,
I recently was demoted from a shift supervisor to a barista. This was a big shock to me as I’ve never been written up, only have called out twice in two plus years and have been working really hard to uphold all the company standards.
When I questioned my sm about why I was being demoted and having my pay reduced they could only tell me that the store wasn’t making enough money to support all the shift supervisors we have. They assured me it had nothing to do with my performance.
Their reasoning confused me as without me and the other partner they demoted they would only have four shift supervisors. Since I’ve worked at the store they have always had six. It has been extremely busy in our store during the lock down and even more so now that everything is opening up.
I recently took the 120 day leave of absence option which they told me had nothing to do with me being demoted. They told me it would have happened if I didn’t take the leave of absence.
As I take this time off I wonder..why the hell would I go back to a company who punished me for working so hard and demoted me for doing nothing wrong?
Has anyone else gone through something like this? I’m livid.

Wow I'm so sorry that this happened. That has never happened to me, but if it did and that was the reason they gave me, that would likely be the last straw and I would immediately start looking for opportunities elsewhere.

Dang. That bites. I’m so sorry about that.

Unfortunately your SM can demote any shift if the business doesn’t need a shift and if other stores in the same district don’t need shifts.
Each store has to have a certain amount of shifts (usually between 2 and 5) Seems like your store was running heavy on shifts and your DM or RD finally had to tell your SM to get back to the right number of shifts.
I’m sorry about that.
Once you get back from your leave, I would contact your DM and ask to be a shift again. But if your store doesn’t need a shift, they might ask you to transfer to a different store to be a shift.

I've seen people get demoted from SSV to barista because they were a bad shift, or because they chose to do it, but I've never heard of anyone being forced to do that because of money.

It's absurd and alienating not just to you, but to all partners. And how much money are they really saving? If a shift makes $2/hour more than a barista, and you worked full time they only save $80 a week. If a manager can't find $80/week somewhere else they're a bad manager.

This is also a case for having a union to create more job security.

Contact your DM and call partner services. I'm not sure where you live and employment laws vary from state to state. This all sounds highly improper, if not illegal.

If that state allows for partial unemployment I would file for amount you would lose in wages.

My store is making more money now than before we shut down in April, and we were already a high volume store. Didn’t stop the 3 options thing from taking 15 people (nearly half the store), out of the schedules. Yesterday was gigantic shitshow of a shift that I had. Nowhere near enough time or people to do things.

Wow I'm sorry. I understand cutting a shifts hours, but demoting them entirely? Ouch, I haven't heard of that before. The only times I've seen a shift demoted was due to performance which the sm talked to them about several times. I've seen stores with too many shifts transfer someone to a different store, ive seen other shifts with as little as 12 hours, but not a demotion entirely.
