I get it... (self.starbucksbaristas)

If baristas can't refuse service to people not wearing masks, that will lead to a bunch of dead baristas, and then corporate can save way more money.

God, it's genius when you think about it.

You have higher chances of dying in a car wreck on your way to work than from the virus. Plus a short contact with a customer without a mask is not as high risk (for getting the virus) as you might think (unless you get super up close with your customers). Just follow safety protocols, close the window at the DT while you are waiting for their order, and sanitize/wash your hands if you are not wearing gloves and accidentally touched customers hand. Don’t touch your face and sanitize your work area. You’ll be fine :)

Just because it won't kill you doesn't mean you want it. You could pass it to someone who it could kill. Or you could have to deal with an aggressive flu. Best to not get it

The research on cloth masks is sketchy at best. The general population and media bullied the CDC into recommending masks. It can't hurt, but it's just giving a false sense of security to keep people moving along with life. It's an action you can take to "prevent" the virus, therefore you feel safer and get back out there. Realistically you aren't going to get covid from a maskless customer any more easily than you would get strep throat or the flu. Just wash your hands bro.

How often does a customer spit on you or cough in your face? This scenario has never happened to me. Maybe don't stand so close to people? I wear a mask because that's what I'm getting paid to do. I've read at least 2 peer reviewed medical articles suggesting that mask use by the general population is counter productive. They aren't links. They are from big medical journals I pulled off a shelf doing research papers I did in college microbiology classes. I can try and drag the papers off an old hard drive, but I'm never going to change the mind of angry redditor. My favorite thing is the whole "#science" post of the lady coughing on agar trays with and without a mask. Viruses don't grow that way or show up on agar. They are effective against bacteria. Whoopdiedo. Also these infographics shared around social media are bogus.

Here's a nice easy to find med journal entry:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4420971/

Also I found articles linking to 2 scientific papers stating masks were effective. Both have been retracted. https://www.acpjournals.org/doi/10.7326/L20-0745

I'm just saying as someone who had a degree in biology, a vast working knowledge of disease transfer, deals with medical professionals on a social level, and sees social patterns with government funded businesses like the CDC...the masks are bullshit.

I get spit/coughed on at the very least once a week. Sooooooo several instances since this whole pandemic started. And I can't do anything about it because they wont put up plexis in the drive window. Not that it would probably help anyways. People love to figure out how to get their head around those damn things 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

CDC literally says "may be effective." Not is effective. They spend most of the mask guidelines page emphasizing the importance of maintaining physical space, and point out masks are a voluntary special precaution. Source: their website.

I've never been spit on by a stranger. In all of my life. Not once. Never.

Clearly you haven't been at Starbucks long, or you are a 19 year old closer if you think people you work with are "just baristas." I've seen so many advanced degrees, PhD candidates working through school, retirees, and bored housewives. I've worked with a MD that was going thru a mid life crisis, couldn't deal with the existence of health insurance companies, and just cracked one day. Slinging coffee is weirdly cathartic to the extremely intelligent. Take a poll at your store, see how many people have an IQ over 135. Based on your critical thinking abilities and knee jerk reaction to conflict I'm guessing you don't.

You aren't getting my full credentials. Anonymity is a whole thing here. My "degree in general studies " is literally all about scientific research and problem solving. Lots of research journals. Lots of fill in the blank. I'm very good at finding answers to questions, and I take nothing at face value. In fact, when I worked for the CDC fresh out of college that's what I did. Looked for patterns. Used documented research to back it up. Not everyone contributing to science works in an epidemiology lab, but good job using your SAT words!

Go ahead, keep feeling superior, and read those peer reviewed medical articles you wanted linked....and conveniently overlooked because you can't be bothered to actually think. I'll stay over here with my "conspiracy theories" based on research.
