she’s a cop, and let’s just say i am pretty firmly in the ACAB camp. but whatever, that doesn’t mean I’m going to go out of my way to be rude to her on the clock. but she has this crazy specific drink that my manager has to make herself or else it’s usually made wrong, and apparently she’s “really nice unless you mess up her drink.” why do we put up with that?? leaving a small layer of foam on a skinny vanilla latte is not acceptable grounds for giving an attitude, regardless of your uniform.
I know this is a small complaint, it’s just been bothering me lately.
snidejenner50 points3y ago
I would just decaf her. Lmfao.
VentiEggBite49 points3y ago
We had a Karen cop last night that may or may not have gotten decaf 🌝
flwhrsss8 points3y ago
Karen cop sounds like the most cursed of combos wtf
VentiEggBite6 points3y ago
It is, trust me. She’s got the block brows and chunkily highlighted bob too.

We have tons of cops frequenting my store because we’re a high incident store and also it’s the kind of area we’re in. This one cop got this keto drink that one of the morning shifts made her. It was so insane and specific and she couldn’t even tell me what was in it. I ended up texting the morning shift during an afternoon rush and had to make this in a line of drink. Seeing that I was exhausted and not pleased with that, she got to the handoff, leaned over and got in my face, ‘hey?! Hey?! How ARE you?!’
Herry_Up7 points3y ago
Please continue the story, I’m interested
dancing_durian13 points3y ago
That was pretty much it. I basically looked up once and said ‘I’m good!’ and then turned away. If you were curious about the drink, it was 2 packs of peach tranquility, steeped for 5 minutes, then some SFV, heavy cream and sprinkle with cinnamon on top. She hasn’t come in again since. At least not on my shifts. She goes in the morning and my SM loves her.
Thirdatarian8 points3y ago
Ever since someone pointed out to me that peach tranquility smells like feet, I can’t shake that when I make a drink with it. Aside from that, I hate making drinks with steamed heavy cream because of the sound. Altogether this sounds like a disgusting nightmare.
EeePeeTee19 points3y ago
Make the drink as you normally would, knowing that this will upset her. Take the heat without flinching. Record it it and share it with your community. Maybe she will chill out.

True. Another customer could record it then. I wish you the best.
TheStateImIn9 points3y ago
Next time she is verbally abusive, give her a refund and ask her to leave the store.
I quit a year ago, but is that still something you can do when someone is being abusive?
SteampoweredClock5 points3y ago
Probably not. Karen always gets her way

In the interest of playing devil’s advocate - her being a cop really has nothing to do with this story. She’s a pain in the ass like many other pain in the asses.
This is like saying, “I saw this Black woman (not that race has anything to do within) do XYZ...”
libbythebard7 points3y ago
i understand what you’re saying but mentioning that she’s a cop is not at all like mentioning if someone is black. it clarifies that she is someone in a position of authority and not just a regular customer and also happens to be a socially relevant comment. saying that it’s the same is like saying that “blue lives” are under attack as much as black lives. one instance is regarding a profession and the other is regarding someone’s body and humanity. regardless, now is not the time to be playing devil’s advocate, or ever really, especially with cops who are being at best just rude or worst committing murder.
_Pulltab_2 points3y ago
That’s a totally valid point. I was using my experience (as a White woman) as a frame of reference on this, with the experience that we defer, always, to customers, regardless of how ridiculous the request or how rude they are. But my experience isn’t the default experience, and clearly that changes when looking at it through a Black person’s perspective. Thanks for calling me out on that.
rabbitmom1999 [OP]5 points3y ago
I think it has a lot to do with this story. I really don’t think we as a staff would be so nice to her and bend over backwards to make sure her dumb drink is always perfect if she weren’t a cop. I think saying “she’s really nice if you don’t get her drink wrong” is a result of this automatic and unearned respect for cops. and this post was just to share that frustration and the contradiction, because we complain all the time about difficult regulars but she gets special treatment because of her uniform, even in my “blue” state.
kamiko_k963 points3y ago
I don't know - I came across a lot of those people in my three years at Starbucks, and none of them were cops. I'm a POC and even I was wondering what that had to do with the story.
I try to keep as many advocates on our side, cops or otherwise. And in my experience, the cops I would serve at my store always treated me very well and were easy to make conversation with. I would gladly take an officer as a customer over a boomer who thinks they can tell me how to do my job.
It sounds like you happened to get a customer who was a Karen in a cop uniform. They exist, so I'm not surprised. I just don't think it's healthy, especially in this climate, to blame it on them being a police officer. We need less division, not more. 😔
rabbitmom1999 [OP]0 points3y ago
ok well I clarified what being a cop had to do with the story in my comment so if you’re still confused just read that part again I guess. and everyone else reading it seems to understand the connection lol. I was just pointing out that as a POC myself, it makes me uncomfortable how much we unquestioningly respect cops just because they’re cops. my original post was not just about her being a Karen about her dumb drink but also about the fact that my coworkers have this level of respect for her that they don’t necessarily have for other customers, and they let her get away with more rudeness and attitude because of her uniform.
Kaywin2 points3y ago
To be honest, I have regular customers like that who don’t wear any kind of uniform who come through my store. Most of the time the folx we get who have v specific orders are patient and understanding with us when we don’t get it quite right, but some of them are impatient. It sounds to me like this customer could be an opportunity to exercise those customer connection muscles. Ask her about what she likes about keto, or if she’s tried XYZ popular keto food/drink, or ask her about what she likes so much about her drink. Especially since you got a whole 5 minutes of tea steeping time to yak with her, why make it more awkward and frustrating than it needs to be?
The stats about being in uniform and unwarranted violence aren’t encouraging, but that doesn’t mean that we have to take this person’s bumbling w/ her drink order personally. Why not get curious instead?
rabbitmom1999 [OP]1 points3y ago
why is no one r e a d i n g m y p o s t lmao
Kaywin2 points3y ago
We are, actually.
I think where you’re getting stuck is people don’t have the same experience as you or/and fundamentally disagree with what you’re saying.
We may bow to unreasonable people because that’s the culture of Sbux, but that ain’t because they’re wearing a uniform.
nobullshitplz2 points3y ago
That still didn’t have anything to do with being a cop. Are you saying you don’t make drinks correctly for other customers? You’re not making a lick of sense here
rabbitmom1999 [OP]0 points3y ago
I feel like I’ve repeated myself enough at this point, and everyone else interacting with this post seems to more or less understand it lol so idk what about it you’re not getting lmao
ReroFunk1 points3y ago
There's a trump supporter regular who's similar at my store. He immediately peeved me when I first started working there because he was rude to me when I took his order for the first time and asked him to repeat himself because I couldn't hear. I didn't even know he was a Trump supporter then. He's apparently like that always and used to be way worse and more rude. So he's "nice" so long as he gets perfect treatment and ZERO inconvenience. He'll get huffy if you don't small talk with him either too. I truly hate it and avoid interactions with him now because it boils my blood too much at how he treats people.

Make the drink she’s asking for because SHE’S paying YOU? It’s honestly not that hard to follow instructions.
rabbitmom1999 [OP]12 points3y ago
oh but she’s not paying me! she’s paying the multi billion dollar corporation that exploits my physical and emotional labor and then gives me pennies in exchange. but more to your point, it honestly sounds like you’ve never worked customer service before.
kbdouluvvme-2 points3y ago
Actually, I work at Starbucks. And you sound like the partners that whine about fucking everything. You hate the corporation you work for? Quit and open one to compete with it. Stop being reactive and be proactive.
rabbitmom1999 [OP]3 points3y ago
uh oh we have a bootlicker 🙄
kbdouluvvme-1 points3y ago
Uh oh we have a snowflake
libbythebard2 points3y ago
lol you definitely don’t understand how capitalism works buddy
kbdouluvvme0 points3y ago
I don’t understand how capitalism works? This coming from the same crowd of people who complain about Starbucks giving partners the three “packages” in order to continue making money. The same crown of people who demand an entry level job is worth more money. Lmfao. Right.
libbythebard2 points3y ago
just because she is paying to have this drink made does not give her the right to harass the people who made it just because they made it a little wrong. it takes much less effort to politely ask for it to be fixed and you don’t make the worker feel like shit while doing it.
kbdouluvvme1 points3y ago
It takes little effort to make the drink right the first time.
libbythebard2 points3y ago
that’s extremely optimistic. it can be hard to get everything 100% right when your store is swamped, your stressed because the drinks don’t stop, and your manager is pushing for perfect times. and if the only thing wrong with her drink was that there was foam, that’s an easy mistake to both make and fix. mistakes happen, no need to be a dick about it.
