Apron! (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by maybeian
So I’m a lil green bean who is starting extremely soon and I had a quick question about the apron, should I come into the store with it on or should I keep it folded up until I actually start working? Thanks!

P.S. what should I bring to make my life just a bit easier? Like a sharpie?

Put it on when you clock in. Come prepared to have your spirit destroyed. Ask questions.

Alright! I have a coffee taste for about the first hour then I hop in to start learning!

Prepare for the modules, they're the worst part. Theyre super boring and its so much info thrown at you all at once, but dont worry, no one expects you to have it down as soon as you finish them. When I was hired my manager told me most people take about 1-3 months to feel properly established, so dont worry if you dont feel like you have everything after the first few shifts. In my experience most of the employees are pretty nice and are more than willing to help. Remember, theyd rather have you ask questions then do something wrong and have someone complain

Thank you! Yeah my manager said at my store there’s a 2-6 month period where you aren’t expected to get everything perfect every single time. I’ve met some of my fellow partners already and I’m already in a group chat with them!

You put it around your neck and throw it behind you like a cape, so customers know that you’re not currently in the clock yet. Then when you clock in, you swing it to the front and tie the back like you normally would.

Yes bring a sharpie, pen, and chapstick. And NON SLIP SHOES!! You’ll bust your ass if you don’t wear non slips. Keep the apron folded until you clock in :) don’t be scared! And ask questions!! Best of luck to ya!!!
maybeian [OP] 3 points 3y ago
Thank you! I just got some non-slip shoes last week in preparation for it!
asphyxiat3xx 4 points 3y ago
Honestly I was wearing non slips for a while but every single pair is so damn flimsy they fall apart within months (I also work full time so they get a lot of love). However, if you're looking for a more durable work shoe, I highly recommend getting a pair of Doc Martens. I've had mine for about a year and they're still in great shape (albeit a bit dirty lol).

Shoes for crews vans look alike have been my go to when I’m not in my docs.
finnjiman 3 points 3y ago
Doc Martens also has nonslip boots specifically for restaurant workers! They’re a bit pricey but super comfy and high quality

:O

I always wear my docs for work. I suggest getting dr. Scholls work insoles, it takes a lot of the pain and pressure off your feet.

And be territorial of your Sharpies or they'll be gone by your first hour. ALWAYS ASK FOR IT BACKKK

Don’t wear your apron outside of the store! Try to keep that thing as clean as possible.

Keep the apron folded up until you arrive and are clocked in. You'll receive a nametag, a sharpie and maybe a pen upon arrival. The sharpie especially is an imperative. You NEED to have one on you otherwise you'll always be looking for one. The store will always have a box, you just have to ask for them.

On day 1: Remember to breathe: Day 1 is customer support; brewing coffee a lot, cleaning a lot and restocking a lot. You're going to get a LOT of information thrown at you on day 1. It will get easier. If you forget something don't hesitate to ask. We all still can't remember day dot timelines to save our lives most of the time.

At the end of the day, it's just coffee. Don't worry. Don't freak out. Don't panic. you got this.

Put it on right before you clock in so you’re ready to go. Take a sharpie and pen for sure. You’ll do great!
maybeian [OP] 3 points 3y ago
Thank you!! :)

Bring it with you and throw it on just before you clock in! In terms of other advice? Prepare to be overwhelmed, there is a ton to learn and you’re not gonna get it on the first day, probably not even the first week! Ask questions and try your best and no one will be upset with you. Also just general work etiquette: don’t be on your phone all the time or sneak off to the bathroom to check it. I can’t tell you the number of young baristas we got that would be on their phones and really just made the older partners annoyed and not want to give them a chance.

I carry mine in, then when I go to the back to set down my purse and stuff I put it on, then clock in and grab my headset. I was told that's how to do it at my store.

And in my pockets, I always have spare Bobby pins (I have long hair so I keep them as a just in case), at least one sharpie, and an unloaded gift card incase I have to scrape sticky shit off something
perfecktenschlog 2 points 3y ago
keep a box cutter w you !! and like everyone else said : pen. sharpie, chapstick and make sure you always have a name tag (:
Gothicpsycho16 1 points 3y ago
Keep it folded until your in the back and ready to clock on make sure its on and ready before you do. Always take it off when going to the restrooms,
MAKE SURE YOUR SHOES ARE NON SLIP. Mine were advertised as non slip but werent and when i wemt to take my break the first day someone mopped the back and i fell flat on my back with a extra hot hot chocolate and a grilled cheese all over me and my arms. So just double check make sure you have a sharpie and a pen. And try to stay positive and dont be afraid to ask questions. Its better to ask then to mess up because you didn't. Much love and support and welcome to the fam!
