I am about to start my one on ones with my manager to start my training to be a trainer and then a shift. I was thinking of making little cards to put on a ring for green beans I train to keep in their apron so they have like a little cheat sheet for all roles and for beverages... Any one have any advice for someone starting the promotion process

This is super cute idea! I recently became a trainer myself. I’ve only trained one person so far and she said she really enjoyed the way I trained/helped her. But I think this little touch you’re talking about would really be helpful. I just told my green bean to go on the app and look at the drinks for the recipe. Lol

I’ve been a trainer for a couple years and I always like to give them one of each cup labeled with the size, how many shots come in it and how many pumps go in it to take home and study. I also like to have them taste a latte with a dead shot and one with a live one so they can taste the difference it makes on the quality of the drink! Your idea is super cute and I think it’d be really helpful, especially if you aren’t there when they come out of training and they have questions. I would definitely laminate the cards though, as a new barista my apron was wet like 70% of the time I was on bar and any paper I had in my pockets was destroyed!
Oh also if you don’t know how to answer a question they have it’s totally okay to tell them you aren’t sure, then you can both go on the hub and figure it out together 😄

Also try having them try a shaken iced tea vs an unshaken one. May mean a couple extra minutes but you can definitely taste the difference. As long as you're not in the middle of a rush dying on bar with no-limited "help"....

Yes planned on laminating for sure!!

Back when I was training, I would make a fill in the blank card for beverage components (i.e. shots, pumps, etc) for a bunch of drinks in different sizes. I found that helped a lot. However, you do need to keep in mind HOW your green bean learns best. Some people learn better through doing, some through listening, and others through writing. Try to tailor your training approach to their learning style and it will help tremendously.

That’s a good idea. I wanted to make them something that they could just always keep on them even after training until they are comfortable Gonna make one with the basic drink numbers Ie 122 345 123 346 And also one with shelf life’s for when there date doting

Do you ask your SM hey I want to be a trainer?
andersonm499 [OP]3 points3y ago
I mentioned it during a one on one. My SM likes it if you show interest and take the initiative.

You're getting actual one on one training to be a trainer?? At my store they had me watch like, 4 videos and read a thing and boom I was a trainer, which felt entirely insufficient because I still have no idea how to properly train someone with no experience in the store at all.

Trainer / and eventually a shift. We are going to start working on my pdp. Our SM is really good and trying to make time with us and get us to where we need to be.

Yoooo I'm on the same path and have trained about 4 people now! I did something similar and made cards for my trainees to collect after we finished training on something. So far they all really enjoyed them! Good luck to you!
In terms of moving up to SSV, my SM is similar. Show initiative and drive - get moved up. Our most recent SSV vacancy she held interviews for. After conversations w my SM i didnt think i had much to worry about & my interview went well. Ended up getting passed over this time (which is fine the new SSV is doing well!) and the big kicker was basically that I wasn't *seen* coaching or keeping things running smoothly or looking at the big picture for what's happening on the floor. I was doing these things, but my SM didn't think I was because they didn't *see* me doing them. Since then I've developed with another shift to run the floor, done the order and that kind of thing (hell only thing i havent really touched on is money bc of obvious reasons). I've made myself INCREDIBLY vocal about things on the floor (communicating what's going on or coaching a partner, etc). I made sure that these qualities and skills were actively being seen.
Now all the other SSV's know I'm next in line, and when my SM introduces me to someone she says specifically "this is x! she's our next SSV"
I hope that's helpful - not that I've actually been moved up yet hahaha! Basically push communication, do it all the time but especially if your SM is around and if possible I would try and talk with some of your SSVs now just to get a feel for how things work!
