Calling all partners!! SOS(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by starfishgobam
Hello fellow starbies partners! So my store is one of the busiest in our district (despite the fact we are the smallest). For the past year, we have had no AC. Yesterday our store temp hit 93 and the DM still refuses to fix our AC system. Now, we do have a portable AC in the corner, however as evidenced by the store consistently hitting temps of 85 and now 93 it’s pretty clear it doesn’t have the circulation we need. With happy hour tmrw many of the partners at my store are freaked out about working with such high temps (we had to call an ambulance a few weeks ago for one partner). Our SM is trying her best to advocate for us but I want to try speaking to partner resources myself. For those of you with experience, are there any specific terms or phrases I could use to get some action? It’s been a year and at this point some laws must be getting broken. Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Edit: Thank you to everyone for your awesome responses! I think I’m going to give it a day or two and talk about it with my fellow partners so we can present as a unified front on the issue. I am also holding out on the hope that my SM manages to break through to the DM. Again, thank you all so much!!!!!

Fuck, I'm so sorry you're suffering through that. Broken AC temps (esp in hot areas if you are) at my store are considered a Primary 1 response. Good luck, stay safe, and I hope someone gives you some useful advice.

Contact your DM ASAP, you want a good happy hour provides us with A/C and mask do not help in hot weather.

Google OSHA says temp must be below 76F

Just took a look at OSHA, seems it may be a safer route than partner resources (I’m scared of getting fired tbh or marked as a ‘problem’)

You can call osha, or even the state health department, at least in the USA. The store being that hot is a hazard to all the dairy and the food items, protein boxes and paninis. The store being that hot will allow bacteria to flourish within many food items, including ice! I have called the county health department before because a previous job had a ton of disgusting violations and they handled it well by making it look like a random visit. Also, call the PCC number! You cannot legally be marked as a problem because you report hazardous conditions in your store. I cannot implore you enough to speak up about this. The customers, no matter how rude, don’t deserve food poisoning and YOU and your crew don’t deserve to work in these hot conditions! Edit: TAKE PHOTOS OF THE THERMOSTAT

Dude Jesus Christ!!! If you had a partner go down to the point of needing an ambulance for heat stroke that is straight up dangerous working environment. Definitely get photos of the thermostat at that heat and share them with your store manager. Your store manager can circumvent your district manager with that evidence and take it to the regional manager, if they’re a real tough cookie. I’m furious for you that insuring the basic needs of employees is something that could get to labeled as a ‘trouble maker’. I’m sure it varies a lot from region to region, but I know my district it’s got to be pretty extreme for them to fire you and they definitely can’t get away with doing it based on this issue. If your SM is on your side in this issue then that’s pretty solid protection.

We have taken photos of the thermostat! I think I’m gonna keep collecting evidence and eventually make my move!

Best of luck to you hun, virtual hugs!

Call your board of health! It's not safe for customer or barista safety for about six thousand reasons, and have them call your district manager. Or have a walk out because that's insane and I'm sorry it's happening to you.

Go straight to the facilities manager in your area.

OSHA, and ASAP!!!!!

OSHA is your best bet, that’s unsafe work conditions. You could also have a friend bring in a local news team and see how fast your DM or SM gets it fixed with a little press coverage to encourage them.

This is a total deal breaker for me. I would leave. If they fired me, good.
