Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

The only thing getting me through happy hour today... (ventiii rant) (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by dm_for_bees
...is knowing I’ve applied for 3 new jobs with small, local businesses who will very likely care about me and value me more than a corporation/chain does. My city is also very dependent on and invested in the small, local business economy so I am excited to feel closer to my community. but let’s continue..

Seriously, a happy hour promotion during a global pandemic? They’re practically asking to overload cafes and DT and get partners sick with covid. I’m in a cafe-only and the maximum cafe capacity right now after counting partners on the floor is ~10 people. :(

Even though business is picking up fast, hours have been cut and we are almost always running 2 people only as early as 1pm, with a small overlap with the mid/closer baristas for breaks. I regularly don’t have a break until the last 45 mins of my shift. (We have a 3rd today for HH, thankfully.)

I’ve never worked a HH on bar but I’m hoping my ssv puts me there so I don’t have to be so customer facing.

And apparently we can’t require masks even though my county is mandating them...don’t want to ruin the Starbucks experience???

I love my team, my store has great partners and a wonderful, wonderful store manager but I’m just done with all the bs... and I need to make more money, honestly. I will miss my store family so much though and it’s breaking my heart.

Just double-checked my schedule for this evening and it’s thru happy hour — and audibly said “... oh god.”
I can’t believe I hadn’t even realized the possible consequences of HH during a pandemic. I’d been against stores opening up so soon as it is... Let alone I can’t believe corporate hadn’t realized it. 5yr barista here (degree’s taking a little longer than planned), I think we can expect to see a mass exodus of partners leaving the company in the near future for a collection of reasons.
Are you in the US? In New York, we require all persons entering stores to wear a face covering by law. We literally can’t let them in otherwise; worst case scenario we offer to bring the order to them curbside.
Most importantly though, congratulations on finding better opportunities — you deserve better than this. We all do.

my county has a mandate, but someone who gets paid more than me (probably my DM if i had to guess) insists that we can’t kick anyone out or tell anyone to wait outside when they aren’t wearing facial coverings. (meanwhile, every local cafe in my area has at least 3 signs explicitly saying they will not serve you without one. i’m so ready to be valued. lol)

The governor of my state is trying to pass a mandate that will hopefully demolish whatever third place argument my local corporate overlords want to make. :/ but money talks too so idk

Huh. I’d imagine your people would want to maintain the safety and health of the third place first and foremost lol. If they’re worried about people claiming they can’t wear a mask due to hEaLtH iSsUeS or sPeCiAl PrIvIlEgEs, it doesn’t hold weight due to the risk of public health if they DON’T wear a mask — that includes these bogus cards floating around online that anyone can print out, laminate and make it look official. Literally last night a dude comes in to pick up a mobile order, no mask, and I politely ask if he has one. He flashes this ID card on a lanyard and says he was “cleared by the city”(??) (we are not near any major cities as it is) and I said “ok well we still need you to wear one please lol”, said we could run the order outside when it was ready.
Turns out not only did we not have an order for him, but he was gone when my SM went outside 🤷🏻‍♀️
