Hi all, partner for several years, new on the sub. Found out tonight starbucks has donated tens of thousands of dollars to police foundations and funded the purchase of military equipment in Seattle and NYC. Frankly, I'm disappointed and believe this contradicts the proclaimed values of the company. (theguardian.com)

They aren't actually very progressive. They're just another huge corporation and their angle is bilking bleeding-hearts from their resources by using guilt and acting like they care about workers and progressive causes. They are a publicly traded company and they will only ever do things that make them more profitable.

If you don't like that, I have some bad news about prison labor.

It's an old business model that goes back to the mafia, companies buy protection with their donations. They get faster response times when they call, and better treatment from the police.

Do you really believe this? You think that when there is an incident at your store and your SM calls 911, dispatch is like “oh, it’s a Starbucks better get right over there!” and then when they arrive they are like “well, usually we would let this go but for you, we’re gonna lock this guy up”?

That’s not how it works. Starbucks gave money to police foundations because until recently it was positive PR to do so. Donating to police organizations was looked at like donating to veterans and fire departments.

You’re welcome to disagree with where Starbucks gives money but this is just conspiracy theory stuff that isn’t true. They weren’t buying protection, they were buying publicity 🙄

My SM has the personal phone numbers of about a dozen cops, and he texts them when we have problems. He encourages the SSVs to become friends with cops and do the same.

That doesn’t indicate a company-wide conspiracy to buy “fast response” favoritism from the police. Your SM may have developed a personal relationship with local law enforcement but that’s exactly what it is - a personal relationship.

I can tell you 100% that SMs around here access the police the same way anyone else would - by dialing 911.
