Anyone else regretting their choice?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by chom612
After a week of working. I'm beginning to wonder if I should have taken the LOA. Anyone else feeling like they were pressured into staying? Anything we can still do?
Coworkers are not following mask, hand washing, sanitizing surfaces routines and guidelines. Customers are not wearing masks, and not distancing. We have signs everywhere! Walked up to the counter this morning, the barista on pos couldn't hear the customer, so both she and the customer pull down their masks and talked AROUND the barricade! What exactly helps YOU hear better when you pull YOUR mask down? A CUSTOMER COUGHED INTO HIS HANDS THEN HANDS ME HIS CASH!! "IMMA GONNA GO FIND SOME GLOVES ...BRB" OH WAIT WE'RE OUT OF GLOVES.

Being in the middle of interviews for a hopefully team leader position at target only weeks after “the talk” I regret not taking the stipend and just riding through these last weeks before maybe getting this new job
mykotman1212 points3y ago
Good luck at target. You’ll have hell of a time there :)
GymLeaderFlame8 points3y ago
I mean it’s for a team leader position of the Starbucks and grocery department there 😂😂 but at least I won’t be at a high volume drive thru store
mykotman124 points3y ago
I worked at target at the grocery department and damn, it was stressful. I felt bad for my TL. With the new “modernization” the hours are so low and employees are excepted to do the work of 4 people. The launched “modernization” few years back so they can afford to pay employees $15. But everybody’s hours got cut. And the team lead was always soooo stressed (and he didn’t even cover Starbucks, he just did market). If your team can’t get stuff done in the 4 hours, it’s on you. High volume DT is a piece of cake in comparison to target market department.
GymLeaderFlame1 points3y ago
I mean the target has been reaching their goals and are actually hiring for a few new extra TL’s so it’s like an extra food and beverage TL to help be the “manager” for Starbucks and like 60/40 with going over to grocery and making sure everything is being done properly by the team members
mykotman122 points3y ago
Being an SM of two high volume DTs (back when I was an SM) was a lot less stressful for me than Target. But hopefully your target will be different.

I think getting the LOA was very difficult to get approved for. I tried for it because I live with my 70 y/o father who has cancer and was denied. I had no choice but to take the separation because I found that as soon as we went green most weren’t wearing masks or being careful.
Seanpat628321 points3y ago
This.
I was one of three that received it in my district and I only received it due to a health condition.
I'm sorry you weren't able to to stay with the company :(
ethompso621 points3y ago
I’m very fortunate that our manager is very kind and understanding. My 85 yo mom lives with me and I don’t want to put her at risk. She completely understood that. I wasn’t made to feel guilty or pressured.
blinkgreen37 points3y ago
Let's be fair, I feel like we didn't even have a choice. I live with my elderly parents and would have picked the LOA option if it was available at my store and if they didn't say that they have the ability to recall us at any point. I'm thankful that sbux wasn't my main job and didn't have to make a really tough decision based on income. Although, I am quite mad that this would have been my 10 year anniversary in the fall. I feel like we gave them loyalty, but they don't care about us.
aeboombooms4 points3y ago
My 10 year anniversary is in September. Everyone at my store was given all three options.. I’m not sure why your manager would try to influence you guys to believe otherwise. I’m sorry 😐 I am lucky enough that I could take the LOA, but it’s also a long time without a paycheck and I’m not sure I’ll even qualify for unemployment. Texas 👌
blinkgreen1 points3y ago
Our store didn't get option 2 because we had all our hours and didn't close. My SM and I have a good enough work relationship to where he helped me out until our DM told him that he couldn't.
shookbarista-1 points3y ago
They did give us paid month and a half off but yeah, they must not care about us.
sandycat55523 points3y ago
I didn't feel any pressure either way. I think that was because my manager did a pretty good job of presenting the options without any pressure. I could see there'd be potential to feel pressured though.
LaurenOhhh5 points3y ago
I work at a cafe without a drive thru so when everything happened our store closed down and I went to work at another drive thru. I had a shift there tell me that she told the baristas who decided to take the cat pay and not work that she was “disappointed in them” for choosing not to work. I can’t imagine how that store treated people who decided to take the LOA or quit....
dalenakitty14 points3y ago
I mean it wasn't really a choice. It was just a preference, which my manager didn't explain because all my coworkers didn't realize that they could be denied. Most people I know got denied the LOA because too many took the separation package and it is no longer on the table unfortunately.
soda_rain14 points3y ago
We can unionize.
chom612 [OP]17 points3y ago
We could. Then Corporate will shut down ALL of the so called "problem" stores that were involved. All those baristas get separated and put on the DNH list. And Starbucks hires new partners at lower wages ..win, win, win...exept you, we lose. I've seen it happen other places. Fuck, I've even made it happen
Bartender12xxxxx2 points3y ago
We can and should. But people aren't willing to take the risk and do the work required, unfortunately. So they'll keep complaining while being complacent.
lewabwee2 points3y ago
Unionizing is not remotely easy, especially at a massive corporation. It would take a highly experienced, organized and knowledgeable team to pull it off. This is especially true during a global pandemic when sales are lower than they normally would be and Starbucks could more easily afford to just fire people, close down stores and not replace them all without actually losing any business.
And this isn’t to be a complacent downer or to shit on unions but to make sure people are aware that being willing to do the work or take the risk aren’t the only factors involved here. Being experienced and organized before organizing really matters when taking on an international company. At this level even if you successfully unionized everyone it would be easy to fuck up and end up with a shitty union. People who are complaining aren’t lazy they literally don’t have the tools to do something like unionize.
jenkoct122 points3y ago
In that order at Stbx?
piratedashel12 points3y ago
Are you guys telling me that some of you were denied option 2? That’s crazy. I’m a shift and our store is really busy, but I was still approved. I haven’t worked since March. I do have an auto-immune disease, maybe that’s why.
mykotman127 points3y ago
Those were preferences, not options. And any preference can be denied based on store and districts needs. And you were approved because you are high risk.
piratedashel2 points3y ago
Well, either that or they figured they’d let me do it because I made it clear if they hadn’t I’d take my coffee break. I’m a 13 year partner. One other shift and a barista at my store also took option 2. I know of no one that was denied.
mykotman124 points3y ago
In my district not many got denied because we had bough people to cover the business needs. But many stores couldn’t approve all the preferences because their business needed the people. It’s all based on each individual store and district.
femalehomosapien1810 points3y ago
Yes so I took a LOA anyways a week ago and found a new job while doing so. Goodbye Bux
Trump_Rim_Job2 points3y ago
Customer here. When taking LOA, did you have a specific time to accept/decline (like a week) before the opportunity expired?
Btw, congrats on finding a new job.
femalehomosapien182 points3y ago
No. I had an family emergency I had to attend to and got a job offer during my LOA
frontlinesfrappucino1 points3y ago
I had two days, personally, but there was no expiration on making a decision because it was just a preference. So there were two between when I was told my options, and when I had to voice my preference. It was another two day before I was told whether or not I got what I preferred.
thedeadwillwalk9 points3y ago
I opted for the LOA but wasn't granted it. I was told my store was too busy and they needed me. 😐
PlurpleCacti4 points3y ago
Yes 😭😭 I"m a shift, and now I'm being walked all over. My availability isn't respected, and it's affecting other areas of my life. I should have taken the money and RAN
emofish914 points3y ago
I took option 2, leave started Monday, I got the call saying my mall bux opens on the 30th and I need to come back. I really wish I had taken the severance package.
chom612 [OP]3 points3y ago
I feel you. I'm in 7 years now tho. I didnt want to loose my store, position, my salary and all my profit sharing that's not vested. Still it feels a bit like the Kobayashi Maru...doesnt matter what choice you make, the game is rigged. We all gonna die.
sueberley4 points3y ago
I choose preference 2 but it got denied.
yahooanonbar3 points3y ago
Took option 3. Not regretting it.
kiivria3 points3y ago
I didnt feel necessarily "pressured" into staying but I did feel as though I had no other option. Especially being new. My manager told me I could do what I wanted but if I did 2 or 3 I probably wouldnt have been granted it. So my only choice felt as if I had to stay despite having a pre existing condition and now my store has closed twice for covid.
CriticalSheep3 points3y ago
LOAs weren’t approved at my store because we’re so low staffed right now. The only one who is out is because she was on medical LOA prior for some serious health issues. Otherwise we all have to work.
Beast_boy282 points3y ago
I honeslty regret not taking option 3 everyday has just been getting worse. Customers are getting too comfortable which everything going on
tregnoc2 points3y ago
I was told I would get the leave... wasn't on the schedule this week but am back on it next week somehow? So yeah, no, there was no real choice.
pretiburdi2 points3y ago
Call your board of health in your town! Mine was helpful in making sure my managers stayed on track, and took my concerns anonymously.
libbythebard2 points3y ago
i chose option 2 because both myself and some of my family members are high risk but then was denied at first because “i’m a source of positivity on the floor” (hardly lol) but was then approved when i voiced that i was having a hard time breathing while working because i have asthma and wearing a mask makes it worse.
Potential_Confidence1 points3y ago
I wasn’t pressured or made to feel guilty either. She told me they would be perfectly fine and understanding with whatever I decided and not to feel bad. I honestly just don’t see how my situation doesn’t meet their “requirements” for leave, but I’m trying not to dwell too much on it.
knifebitch1 points3y ago
I came in this morning to open with the shift supervisor who almost immediately started crying, explaining that she’d just had 4 friends diagnosed with covid, one of them die, and an aunt who she had recent close contact with was also diagnosed. She’s also a new mom with a 5 month old baby who couldn’t be left in the care of her covid infected family members safely, yet she was entirely unable to find coverage for herself and came in regardless. Not only was she potentially exposed, but her child is staying now with her mother who was directly exposed while she had to work in part due to very very poor management on the part of my DM. We have 4 stores with confirmed cases in my district alone, and they’re all gutted from partners self isolating leaving stores like mine that have 2 shift supervisors total due to the circumstances stretched to the maximum.
I’m upset at the company, I’m upset at certain people in my chain of management, I’m very very upset that I have had to witness so much of my coworkers’ pain caused by sbux. I felt inherently pressured to stay because I was being promoted as the company put a hold on all promotions, but that meant I knew most stuff that the shifts knew and could essentially function as a non-official extra shift supervisor (without the pay, of course) in a time of crisis where we’re writing full schedules with 2 shifts and 1 manager (no asm). It sucks, and I wish I would have known it would be the way it has been when I chose pref 1.
strangehunny1 points3y ago
i’m really sorry about your situation. the weeks i worked prior to the LOA were hectic and no one was washing their hands or wiping down headsets and i’m thankful i was able to leave. my regret is not leaving the company entirely when i could’ve.

What's funny is that my store manager mentioned the three options, but only because a friend of mine (fellow barista in NYC) asked if I'd had the discussion about them. And my SM told me she'd talk to me about it later. Come to find out that me and at least one other barista haven't had it discussed with us. We two are ALSO according to the SM the strongest baristas the store has. I don't think these two things are not connected.
chom612 [OP]2 points3y ago
You need to talk to your DM. Even if you think you would have chosen to keep working. I've head from many, many partners who were never given a choice at all

I didn’t feel pressured. I’m sorry that you experienced that. I took the LOA
