I’m definitely donating my extra wage from yesterday to the NAACP. does anyone else feel kind of weird keeping it for themselves given the context of the holiday?

A bit, tbh. I’ve been donating any extra cash I have to bail funds and gofundme’s these days, so I’ll probably end up doing the same here. I think the thing that makes it weird for me is that as a white person, I’m getting extra money from a holiday based on the anniversary of enslaved people being told they weren’t enslaved anymore two years after they’d been legally freed. I know financially I’m privileged that I’m able to make this choice, but it doesn’t feel right to keep the extra money earned for that day.

I very much agree with this. and I’m also not disparaging anyone who isn’t black and decides to just keep the extra cash, I know times are tough. but if I’m in a position where I can donate that money, and I am, then I feel like I should.

I’m so happy I’m not the only one who felt weird about it. I’m overjoyed that Juneteenth is getting the recognition it deserves but I’d rather sbux just donated all the extra money they’re giving to us for time and a half to the NAACP or some other organization.

I so agree with that. might as well just cut out the middle man. and if Starbucks made a huge donation like that I’m sure it would help with their image too lmao

I donated to the bail out fund for protestors. I am with you.

Yeah I plan on setting it aside & donating it or buying from a Black-owned business

Yeah, this! The extra will allow me to buy more books so I'm planning on focusing on black authors.

that’s a great idea as well!

I have been donating extra funds to a PayPal pool set up to go directly to the black moms in one of my Facebook groups. If they want their nails done or to order takeout or go on a retreat, the money is there to be used. They have put in a lot of emotional labor to help me be more aware of my privilege and for that I am thankful. I’ll use my dollars to help directly.

that’s such a great idea! I love just knowing that something like that exists

I also donated to the NAACP last week. I’ve been striving to buy more from black owned businesses, like I ordered BLM signs in bulk from a BoB.
