Vegan Frapp (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by mpk1012
Some lady came through our DT yesterday and asked if we could make any of our frapps vegan. I told her we could just use an alternative milk and not put any whip on it. So she asked for s’mores, anyways, we make it and the barista put the chocolate in the bottom of the cup and we rinsed the cup and then my dumbass forgot graham crackers aren’t vegan either. The lady overpaid for a vanilla frapp and it still wasn’t completely vegan because there were graham crackers. I didn’t realize this till I woke up this morning.

Honestly... if you're vegan and don't do more thorough research than asking a very busy barista, you fucked up.
snaileywhaley 66 points 3y ago
I completely agree. All the nutritional information and ingredients are listed online. Don't put the success or failure of your diet/lifestyle in the hands of another individual. If they fuck that up, it's on you. That's also why I hate, "What do you have that's keto?" or even more obnoxious, "Do you have anything paleo?" Ma'am, go home.
star_pants 36 points 3y ago
My favourite is "how many calories are in \*insert custom drink here\*"
littleedge 16 points 3y ago
I don’t even know what normal foods are keto or paleo.
miniinovaa 5 points 3y ago
I don’t think any are keto besides egg bites
littleedge 1 points 3y ago
No, like, legit normal, non-Starbucks food. What even is.
writersandweirdos 7 points 3y ago
I think because of Starbucks ~brand~ customers expect us to know the gluten free, vegan, nondairy (etc) options. We had a lady yelling at us on DTO because we didn’t have enough vegan breakfast options for her, like we had any control over that? People definitely should come with some idea or at least a back up plan in case the barista doesn’t know the nutritional content for everything we sell 😂😂
danslavraievie 35 points 3y ago
Vegan barista here. I agree that it's the customer's responsibility to research before going. There's so much simple info online to making a vegan drink.

That being said... an easy way to make a vegan smore's frap is to do a mix of mocha (not the smores chocolate bc it has milk), vanilla, and marshmallow syrup with non-dairy milk & no whip. Tastes great.

Yes, US mocha is vegan, no, java chips aren't bc they contain milk.
greenduffel 3 points 3y ago
are we technically allowed to sell marshmallow syrup to customers, though? it doesn’t seem to be an option when ordering on the app or ringing them up (i apologize if i’m mistaken)

edit: not trying to be the barista police/narc here. this is a solid alternative and would love to recommend it!
danslavraievie 5 points 3y ago
Honestly I work at a Tarbucks. We have Target registers so we don't have the option to add a specific syrup, I mean we can charge extra for someone adding syrup but we don't add what specific syrup it is. We just write everything on the cups 🤷‍♀️

And no worries! It's good to hear the differences that you guys have in your systems!
greenduffel 2 points 3y ago
wow that’s niceee. i’ll have to try it out!
dalenakitty 24 points 3y ago
Vegan barista here. I feel like as a vegan you should always do your research and ask questions when ordering something that is not normally vegan. Like people should just ask or look it up. All our nutrition info is online. They should know not to rely on someone who is not vegan tbh. It was an honest mistake on your part and if they care they need to research before ordering.

Thank you! That makes me feel better. :) I’ve been with the bux for almost a year (one month until my anniversary!) and have never had someone ask me that lol
dancing_durian 18 points 3y ago
I’d recommend a DCCF or JCF with non dairy and no whip. Anything mocha based tend to be the go to for people that are vegetarian/vegan or don’t do any dairy at all. GTF or STCF with non dairy and no whip are also good options. Tbh, I’d rather someone ask for a vegan frap than a ‘sugar free’ frap.
cou_ntrycrock 32 points 3y ago
our mocha is 100% vegan however java chips are not!!!!
danslavraievie 20 points 3y ago
Java chips contain milk.
anonymous-blob 3 points 3y ago
Our mocha has milk powder tho so it’s not vegan
dancing_durian 32 points 3y ago
It doesn’t. Which mocha are you thinking of? If it’s the regular mocha sauce, it doesn’t. If it’s the milk chocolate use for s’mores then yes.
AndrewtheRey 6 points 3y ago
Yeah mocha is vegan. I think java chips are
anonymous-blob -16 points 3y ago
All of our mochas have dairy, white mocha and milk chocolate are dairy based but our mocha sauce that we make has trace amounts of milk powder in it, my vegan coworker has looked into it a ton and it’s not much but it is there making our mocha not vegan.
Schmuckenzie 20 points 3y ago
Basically anything you buy says "may contain traces of milk, peanuts, blah blah" because it's made in the same place/on the same equipment as things that contain them but that doesn't make it not vegan friendly! Mocha passes the test 😊
dancing_durian 6 points 3y ago
Where did your coworker find this information? Just out of curiosity.
star_pants 5 points 3y ago
Are you in the US or Canada? There's a possibility that the recipe is different between each country. I know in the US there is no dairy in the mocha ingredients but it may come into contact with dairy/tree nuts.

She deserved to be over charged if she doesn’t have the intelligence to look at the menu ahead of time. She can go on the website and find whatever combination of stuff is vegan. Customers need to stop thinking we’re nutritionist, why the hell they can’t come prepared
mpk1012 [OP] 1 points 3y ago
😂 I didn’t even think of the charge until after lol. I’m there with ya on customers thinking we are nutritionists 😂
dvrude 6 points 3y ago
As a vegan to other vegans/people with dietary restrictions, just do your own research beforehand. It's so simple. You have Google at your fingertips and the Starbucks app makes drinks super customizable. Don't expect baristas to know what's good for your diet. It's common sense really.
callmebyyourdadsname 5 points 3y ago
the s’mores frappuccino is genuinely one of the most pointless drinks when it’s “vegan.” You have to remove all the things that make it a s’mores (milk choc, marsh whip, graham topping), it’s straight up just a coffee Frappuccino with vanilla. any time someone orders it with no dairy I’m like we can do that but it literally will not be a s’mores frappuccino and they usually end up getting something else.
mpk1012 [OP] 2 points 3y ago
I didn’t think of that until they pulled away and then I was like... uhhhh that was basically a vanilla coffee frapp with almond milk 😬😬😬
mmilkybread 4 points 3y ago
I was recently told by a vegan barista at my location that the frap bases aren’t actually 100% vegan. If anyone has any info if that’s true or not.
mpk1012 [OP] 1 points 3y ago
Oooo I didn’t know that. Gelatin maybe???
danslavraievie 5 points 3y ago
Vegan barista here, I've looked at the ingredients myself and it includes "natural flavors." I've also heard from some vegans that the way the syrups are processed makes them not vegan??

However, a credible vegan news source, called VegNews, regularly posts different vegan Starbucks drinks/recipes, and a lot of them are frappuccinos. So I trust that honestly.

Being vegan isn't about avoiding something that possibly might have looked at or touched an animal once, it's about doing everything in your power to not contribute to animal cruelty.

So I'm not gonna get all twisted up inside bc it says "natural flavors." I trust VegNews and if it ever came out that the frap bases weren't vegan, I'd simply stop drinking fraps. It's as simple as that.

Honestly I feel like often, a lot of vegans who get all anal about that stuff give a bad rap to us vegans in general bc it makes it seem like we're just crazy and over the top with things. I promise 99% of vegans are chill humans who do their best to not hurt animals.

My best friend from college is a vegan and she’s fine with baked goods and such, just doesn’t eat meat or cheese or butter on her toast or whatever and always chooses a vegan baked good if it’s an option. So she’s vegan but not strictly vegan.
juiceyluicy 3 points 3y ago
There is so much cross-contamination; if I was a vegan I would probably go literally anywhere else for coffee. Nothing can be guaranteed. The same blenders and steaming pitchers and tea shakers are used for everything so.
colonade17 3 points 3y ago
There's lots of different kinds of vegans in the world. Some are stricter than others. Some actually know what is and isn't vegan while others are more into veganism as a spritual/lifestyle choice than as a strict set of rules.

You can clearly see the graham cracker topping on that frap, so if she didn't care, then it's probably fine.
DerSnowBunns 2 points 3y ago
I just feel like you shouldn't go to chain joints if you have harshly specific dietary/ lifestyle needs. I was vegan for a few years and going to restaurants was a lot of me asking them to make very specific dishes and I fealt like an ass every time...
drinkliquidclocks 3 points 3y ago
It's not a problem at Starbucks as long as you know what your ordering. Most baristas don't care how custom you make your drink as long as you know what you're ordering and are nice. There are plenty of vegan drinks you can order and most of them are simple

I don’t think it does. It’s mostly sugar and xanthan gum. YMMV if you’re not US-based though.
