Demoting from shift to barista (self.starbucksbaristas)

I regularly think about stepping down to being a barista again. The thing that always stops me is remembering how bothered I get when I'm on the floor and someone else is shifting. There's really only one other shift I'm okay with running the floor. I get really frustrated because I know that I could be doing a better job if they would just turn the shift over to me.

If I step down I'll always be at the mercy of someone else's decision making.

10000% this. My biggest peeve is when the baristas are drowning in bar and the shifts just chill out because they don’t have anything to do or are on their phones. Maybe a transfer isn’t looking so bad. I would just hate to butt heads with shifts at a new store because they are lazy. I’m always trying to help and support my team.

I am a shift, and sadly I can’t even get time off the floor for scheduled admin tasks. I do orders and pulls and counts as my breaks. I see the company praising the ones one AirPods on the floor, or hiding in the back on the phone (not work calls) and I see my output and that of some other partners, and I really feel bad about myself. It is toxic. I am now blaming myself, and participating in my own abuse. It will change soon, or I will break.

THAT is how they get us (the people who care) to give more than we get back, while they will hire incompetent crooks off the street to run a store. Does wonders for one’s self-worth. They might have finally burnt me out.

To be honest, I don't know how anyone could be a shift during this whole thing. The dynamic has changed completely. What does "customer connection" mean anymore? Enforcing standards seems like useless busywork now. The real question is, who would replace you? I imagine anyone thinking of stepping up is in for a rude fucking awakening once they realize that meeting the SM/Corporate's expectations is impossible given the circumstances.

I fucking agree. If I’m being honest I don’t necessarily need the money. I’m doing the ASU program and I much rather work on school. My car will be paid off by September and I’m thinking by then I’m done with being a shift. Everything seems chaotic every day I go in, something is broken, someone called out, it never ends. Thankfully I have a vacation coming up in 2 weeks so I’m hoping to get my head right by then. Ugh just venting.

Sorry I need to scream because I need this to get some attention

DO NOT BELIEVE A SINGLE WORD YOUR SM SAYS

I know there are good SMs out there who go out of their ways to do right by their partners. But among all the crazy things that have cemented my doubt about certain SMs in the past, this recent one really got me. We were also told ‘no outside hiring’ because of COVID Blah Blah. And words got around that 2 people would be promoted since 2 shifts were moving away. I wanted to leave this toxic store so I went on the Starbucks careers website and look for jobs. Lo and behold, 2 postings for my store - one for shift and one for barista.

Ughhhh thank you. I needed to hear this. I’ll have to bug my manager and see wtf is going on. It’s a very stressful time and him being lazy is not helping. Thank you for chiming in!

My store had a similar situation as yours, but we hired on 6 new baristas, your manager is wrong.

Honestly knowing my manager you’re probably right. He’s a great person but not the best at his job. Also doesn’t help that my DM is a bitch and whenever any of us shifts or store managers ask her for help we just get yelled at. He’s too scared to ask her for anything.

That sucks, sorry your DM is a bitch... Hopefully things get better soon

But when you demote you lose your pay don’t you ?
lilBalzac 1 points 3y ago
At my store, it is basically only us shifts left. We work shifts with no baristas and give the tips all to the couple baristas who work part time. Every shift ya short staffed, we can’t hire baristas, we get nothing we order from the warehouse, I am literally crying. Breaks? Hah! You mean punch -out and pull pastry?
acy26 2 points 3y ago
Do you work at my store?! Lmao. But seriously, I feel this! And then we get bitched at by customers because we don’t have this or that, I’m sorry let me just run to the warehouse and grab it for you?? Customers seem to be so much more rude and crabby since this pandemic started. I just don’t understand how people don’t see there is WAY bigger things going on in this world. I’m sorry you had to wait 7 whole minutes for your damn Frappuccino.
