Question about how to charge for “grande in a venti cup” (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Cassiefaithfully
My store is in a debate on this. If a customer orders a grande frappuccino with extra ice and a shot of espresso, can they put it in a venti cup? Or “put the extras in a tall cup?”

And if a customer orders a grande brewed coffee in a venti cup with extra cream or milk, do you charge for milk? My team and other stores in my area are charging differently for these things and I’d like your opinions.

Several of my partners worked at Starbucks in grocery stores and movie theaters so I think they may have been taught differently. I’ve tried looking on the hub but can’t find any clear answers for these types of orders.

Licensed stores can price things differently and charge extra for some add ons that corporate stores don't. Most licensed stores add on for anything that uses ingredients. So those baristas probably got taught the correct way to do it at a licensed store, which is different than a corporate store. Not sure why corporate allows licensed stores to do this since it annoys and confuses customers.

Adding milk to coffee uses the 'with milk' button, however if it's the base of the drink (i.e. frap made with breve) then you use the other button which has a charge. Generally if it's 4 oz or less we don't charge.

A single drink must fit in one cup. So if a customer asks for the "extra" I explain that when we make the drink correctly that there's no extra. So if we put that extra ice and whatever else in the blender, the customer only gets what fits in their cup.

I only ever really upsize the cup is for extra whip or if Karen just REALLY needs the extra ice in a large cup, sure whatever. But I NEVER give the extra on the side. If whoever’s on reg makes the moment right by “ask me” two tall cups on-a venti frapp I give them their Frappuccino with two tall empty cups on the side because if you wanted two tall Frappuccino’s you should have ordered them that way. And now I don’t charge for milk unless it’s over 4 oz like tall in a venti with almond milk to the top. If it’s over 4 oz and steamed I charge the customer for a misto. Most people will exclaim “they never charge me that!” Well they should. Because I don’t need to send your pike down my bars line to get steamed milk unless it’s a misto because that’s labor we’re not getting compensated for.

Sure you can put it in a venti cup, but don’t give the extras in another cup. They’re paying for one drink, they get one drink. Toss the extra that doesn’t fit.

I usually wouldn’t charge for a brewed coffee because they can also just do the same thing at the condiment bar and it’s not over 4 oz.

We’re supposed to charge for anything over 4oz I think so that’s a base point.

i don’t put frappuccinos in larger cups unless asked, i also don’t give out “extras in a tall cup”.

my store doesn’t charge for extra cream in a grande in a venti coffee because policy is to charge for over 4 oz, and there’s exactly 4 oz of space.

So for hot coffee, you won’t charge for extra milk because we give 4oz of milk for free and the difference between grande and venti is 4oz. If customer wants tall in a venti, you would charge for milk because it would be more than 4oz if milk.

For Frapps, (from what I remember), we can’t put grander in a venti (if there are left overs in a blender) or extra left overs in a different cups. Customer gets what they are paying for. So if they are paying for grande Frapp (no matter if they get extra ice or an add shot) they will get it in a grande cup and left overs will be tossed. I’m pretty sure it was in beverage manual before.

And if you measure right.. the shot of espresso and all the normal grande measurements fit in a grande cup!

Yeah, I was mostly taking about if they get extra ice. If you put a shot first, then roast, then milk to the bottom line, you shouldn’t have any extras.

At our store if they order a grande frap, they get a grande frap regardless of modifications. They can get it in a venti cup, but it'll still be the grande amount of frappuccino.

If a customer orders a grande brewed coffee in a venti cup with cream to the top I probably wouldn't charge, since it's a 4oz difference between a grande (16oz) and a venti (20oz) and they're at the free 4oz limit? But I could see going either way on this one.

You should never give extra drink in a separate cup for a customer. There really shouldn’t be so much extra of a Frappuccino that it could fit in an entire tall cup anyway, even if there’s shots of espresso as long as you follow the recipe correctly. (Sure, there could be some extra but it really isn’t much and should be just thrown out).
A man came through my drive-thru and treated me like I was stupid because I refused to give him a venti Java chip with 3 shots of espresso and “the extra in a separate cup”.

As for a grande in a venti cup with extra milk in a hot coffee. I give them extra milk and leave room at the top of their cup still. That’s generally what the customers I’ve helped have wanted, and I’ve never had a complaint about doing it this way. You shouldn’t charge unless there’s more than 4oz of milk.
