Anyone else here have ADHD and hate micromanaging higher ups? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by ritadere
I’m having a bit of trouble at my store: I’m a six year (in August) Bux barista and our manager has decided to ‘keep tabs on night crew’ when we get all our work done and to standard. Anyway, he’s switched things around so a shift supervisor I don’t normally work with is now working with night crew. I wouldn’t mind this if it weren’t for the fact that she hovers and micromanages behind me when making drinks instead of helping me. Im thinking of outing myself as someone with ADHD and telling her and my manager what I need from them (to trust me as a seasoned hire and to please help me on bar when they notice me struggling instead of pointing at a mess and saying clean immediately. One of the problems with ADHD is trouble diverting attention from one task to the other, so that would help me greatly.... With my time working for the company, I have worked on habits to help this, but one can only do so much.).

If you have my friends have recommended I just call HR/Partner resources instead of outing myself and my ADHD, but the whole situation has me so stressed out that I’ve had anxiety triggered nausea on days where this shift supervisor in question keeps hovering instead of helping (I found this out after having 3 tests from my GI doc, including an endoscopy that cost me $1k with insurance.).

Main thing to consider is I need this job for at least 6 more months. I am going to school with our ASU program and I can’t lose the help Starbucks gives me for my education. I have six months till I graduate with my bachelors. Is outing myself and my ADHD the right step? Or should I go right to corporate?
Ps: if I missed any info you have a question about, don’t hesitate to ask! I tried to offer as much info as possible. Thanks.

Can you talk about the issue to the supervisor without mentioning that you have ADHD? Saying something like, “I appreciate that you’re reminding me to keep my workplace clean, but I would be much more productive at the bar if you would let me clean when it makes sense in the flow of drinks. I’m an experienced barista and I understand e standards, but when you remind me it can distract me from the flow of drinks and makes me lose my place.”

i came to this sub to post pretty much the exact same thing!! i’m a lot less experienced (almost a year lol) and one of the youngest partners in my store. and yeah ADHD. i struggle more with my flow of “customer connections” and being able to start conversations. i have common decency and respect and i can be a very very chatty person but if it doesn’t “come naturally” to me with a customer i’ll just avoid it since i rely a lot on scripted lines i’ve pre-rehearsed that make sense in a customer service context to reduce my anxiety. i’m working on eye contact and general socially acceptable cues but it’s still something the customer can take badly so i’d rather just not engage at all

my SM lowkey kinda called me out during a store meeting in front of all my partners when i made a joke saying i would hate to be the concierge since 90% of it is actively connecting with customers saying that “maybe starbucks isn’t the right job for you” and maybe she’s right but ouch lol. i work and communicate well with my partners but now i’m even more hesitant to disclose that i have ADHD to her in case that gives her more of a reason to micromanage me

sorry if this was kinda really off topic but it’s nice to see someone else voice the struggles of working at a job like sbux with ADHD

No it’s ok! If my post can help, awesome! It is really difficult to work here with ADHD sometimes. If what people respond with here helps us both, then that’s fantastic~

So an update to those reading and following this: I had to out my ADHD. My shift supervisor put me in a position where I had no choice but to tell her. I hated having to do this, but a few days ago when I was working with the shift supervisor, she really got in my face and tried to make me do way too much at once to the point where I felt nauseous. I also have really bad generalized anxiety that has slowly been developing since my last relationship. Anyway, so I had no choice but to out myself, as she was getting in my face even when I was feeling physically ill and unable to stand much (went to the bathroom 6-8 times that shift due to nausea. She should have sent me home. This never happens to me.....). Not how I wanted to handle it, as I wanted to instead mention parts of the ADHD as someone mentioned before....instead of the mental disability itself as a whole.

If anyone feels trapped and like it’s the only choice, send them this video: https://youtu.be/jhcn1_qsYmg . It explains literally everything about ADHD and helps them learn a bit. I’m praying it works out for me, but so far so good?
