Is it a good time to ask for a promotion from barista to a shift? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by chokinmychikin
Hi,

I started working for Starbucks at the beginning of the year (286...) and shortly after I left on cat pay. During this time, I learned POS and drive thru (very little bar experience).

Now that I’m back, I’ve re-mastered a lot of forgotten stuff on bar and drive thru and even started to make a good amount of drinks (machiatos, lattes, refreshers, lemonades...the easy stuff).

Due to the loss of my other tutoring job due to Covid-19, I’m struggling a bit financially. Nothing too bad, I just am used to more money coming in and want to make repairs on my car, have more in my savings, buy my sister a car. I can’t to this making $13.02/hr and would like to be promoted to an ssv for the money.

I’m wondering if I should ask my manager about promoting me to a shift. All the other shifts love me and would vouch for me. I’d like to have the extra money. I love Starbucks and am even exploring corporate careers in the company and being promoted to a shift may help that. I’m just apprehensive if right now would be the right time? Should I master everything on bar (like Frappuccino’s and the harder drinks) before asking for this promotion? Should I wait until the virus situation is behind us?

I don’t want asking for a promotion to backfire.

I’d really appreciate some help.

From my experience you’re not nearly ready but never be afraid to start the conversation of the next step! In my area the next process would be for you to become a barista trainer before you can become a shift. That typically comes after you show a mastery of all the areas in the store which is after at least 6-8 months for a fast learner. Make sure you’re showing leadership and initiative. COVID times should allow you to step up and find unique ways to share the third place experience with partners and customers. But the biggest thing is to have the conversation with your manager and fellow shifts and ask what the next steps are and what you need to work on. Good luck!

Okay thanks for the the input! Yes I know I’m definitely not there yet. I didn’t even know about the barista trainer position? Does it come with a pay raise? For all shifts have to be trainers at one point? What do they do that’s different from a regular barista?

Thx

All of everything they said!

One note though: barista trainer no longer comes with a pay raise. You do still however get a small bonus for every barista you train that stays atleast their 90 days.

Sorry about the misinformation! I forgot about that. I’m now a manager of three licensed stores and we still do a pay bump and I forgot! I became a corporate barista trainer in 2010 so my memory is rusty. Whoops 😬

It comes with a pay raise. Most shifts are trainers first. They train new baristas. It shows they have a mastery on Starbucks knowledge and can help mold new baristas. Most managers want to see that their baristas know most things and can teach it before they move up. I should say- they should- it doesn’t always happen that way.

I say "go for it". I've been at starbucks for 8 weeks and I am being promoted to shift at a neighboring store, simply because I asked about being a shift ONCE and that store needs a shift. It seems to me that in these turbulent times, they are looking to fill any gaps in the area so if a store needs a shift, why not you? You sound responsible and as though you give a damn which are two qualities that a lot of people just don't have. Go for it, you have nothing to lose.
