Is it normal to feel like this?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by dumbshawty
I started working at starbucks in April. I get along fairly well with the other partners, one of my shift managers is really dope and the other is okay, etc... But my job makes me feel stupid. The people I’ve talked to both at work and outside of work have said it’s normal to still be getting used to things, but it feels like I’m expected to know a lot. Like when I ask how many pumps of ___ goes in ___ I’m given an eye roll and a snappy attitude. When I didn’t know how to do a pour over, all I got was “did they not show you during training”... things like that. I feel overwhelmed and inept like 80% of the time, or like i’m in someone’s way or simply taking up space. I have a lot of closing shifts coming up and I feel useless because I still don’t know how to do much. My “okay” shift manager gets outwardly annoyed when I ask questions or if I ask for another task. It probably sounds silly but sometimes the work environment is so condescending and unsupportive.

Exactly 100% this is on the dot I feel the same exact way it makes no sense. I just want to let you know that you are not alone and I have been struggling with the same thing. You are valid!
I don't understand how this comes SO SO SO easy like some of my co workers expect it to. But I honestly have taken it upon myself and I just kept trying to study the cheat sheet and get familiar with all the product recipes and I just recently figured out that things like lemonade and mocha have the directions on the actual packaging which is something I must've totally skipped over in training. Another thing I've also been doing is just dealing with the attitude and asking questions anyway no matter my co workers response and if they keep giving you an attitude repeatedly after asking questions then I just try my best at that point.
Don't ever let a coworker drag you around or make you feel stupid because I promise that you're not. And yes you might feel stupid right now but remember that you're doing your best everyday and the fact that you reached out to a forum shows that you care and you are willing to learn so take that into consideration. Pretty much I'm at the point where I'm learning through my mistakes and would recommend that approach to you as well.

Also, it just doesn’t help that some of my co-workers pretty much seem like they never had a learning period and were just born with these skills ???

I’m honestly SO nervous to start DTO 😭 The system so confusing and hearing myself through the headset stresses me out hahahaha. But thank you soo so much!! I’m just excited to be at the point where I’m comfortable in any position and not feeling like someone has to hold my hand all the way through. I really should study the cheat sheets and stuff...

I started in November and I felt like an idiot for the first few months. I don’t think the holidays helped because everyone was running around trying to get drinks to customers so it definitely impacted my training. But I promise it gets better as long as you stick it out and work hard. As long as you’re trying your best the other baristas should be understanding that you are new. Everyone’s been there when they started. I’m sure you are doing great!
I know what helped me was just constantly going over the drink recipes and practicing in my head. Also just being on bar as mush as possible really does help. It’s intimidating when you aren’t super confident making the drinks but I feel like it’s definitely the only way you’ll get better. I remember when I started i would dread when they would tell me to go to bar; but now it’s my favorite place!
So don’t give up and I’m positive you’ll feel better about it soon! 🎉

I’m sure starting right around the holidays made it muuuch more difficult to learn. Most days I do enjoy being on bar, but other times I’m just clumsy and scatterbrained haha. Starting DTO is making me really nervous but I guess so far i’ve proven i’m at least somewhat capable lol. Thank you so much though!! I really appreciate it (:

Good! I’m glad you feel better about it! Really just takes time. I was super nervous when I started doing anything on drive but now it’s fine! As long as you know the order screen it’s not too bad!
Happy to encourage!

Its normal to feel anxious about learning bar, or generally remembering the pump numbers- but having a condescending workplace is not.
Ive been with SB for over 3 years and I still ask for clarification if Im unsure. I dont make a sb doubleshot everyday so its better to ask if its got classic rather than get it wrong. Your coworkers arent perfect, and they ask questions too (if theyre doing their job right, if they dont than Im worried about their performance).
I genuinely hope youre just getting a bad read out of anxiety, because this is a problem. You deserve to be trained properly.

I hope I’m getting a bad read out of anxiety too lol. It’s weird being just one hire in a store full of longer term partners. Honestly this comment made me feel a lot better, it’s hard to put things into perspective like that sometimes.

3 year partner here and I still feel stupid sometimes. This job is just hard, full stop. You’re doing great, honestly.
dumbshawty [OP]2 points3y ago
I’m sorry to hear that for you, but that makes me feel better haha. Thank you (:

There is absolutely a rough point about 3-6 months in. You aren’t getting a ton of positive feedback, but they still have to coach you and make sure things are right. It absolutely SUCKS, but it definitely gets better! You learn everyday and you learn how to learn efficiently. That said, you are still learning and that is okay! You and your questions are valid! ♥️

That’s really helpful and kind 🥺 It’s reassuring to hear that the period of uncertainty and constant learning is much longer than the amount of time i’ve been working there haha.

I felt like this at first!! Now a year in I barely learned how to make cold brew. Don’t beat yourself up this is totally normal. You’re amazing and you’re going to get the hang of things. You are smart and are gonna be okay ❤️❤️
