It could be being taxed at a “bonus payout” rate which is 35-40% depending on the state. I genuinely have zero idea about how they are classifying the payout but if they submit it as a bonus payout (I realize that’s not what this is but that may be how they submit it on the payroll side) then it’ll get taxed at a stupid high level which would be fucked up. No other payroll reason comes to mind for me as to why you would have been taxed so heavily for that payout.

You can ask for a statement from the PCC and maybe that’ll tell you what happened

If you just got paid on Friday, and that was your regular pay cycle, then that should be your normal paycheck from the hours you worked prior to being separated.
