Am I wrong? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by montezio
Some background first.
I've been working at this Starbucks for about a year and a half now, (counting the Rona months) I just got promoted to shift about two weeks ago and haven't finished training yet technically but I have closed the store a couple times.
Anyway I've been looking for better employment for a while now. Over the last few months we've lost a closing shift and 5 other baristas. I'm putting in my two weeks soon because I was offered another job that pays more but I feel really bad leaving the store since I'm technically the only closing shift left.

Am I in the wrong ?

Edit: I didn't expect so many replies, you guys made me cry😂 thank you so much for all the much needed positivity.

Ya that’s not your problem. Don’t worry about it, honestly. They know starbucks has a high turn over rate.
EileJean 52 points 3y ago
No you're fine. It's not wrong to go off to bigger and better things. Don't beat yourself up. Just do you ❤
GoldTurds- 44 points 3y ago
Turnover is expected at starbucks, it is part of the job. Do not feel bad.
golden_pinky 27 points 3y ago
Dude you just need a lil validation and that's okay. Here you go, here's a reminder that you don't owe starbucks anything, u good.
Kyenne_Pepper123 19 points 3y ago
You’re fine. My store had a shift demote himself then quit after working for 5 months. Your store will just have to deal with it.
garlicrotini 10 points 3y ago
Not in the wrong!!! I’m putting in my two weeks on Friday, too. You got this!
scoot_the_poet 9 points 3y ago
You’re not in the wrong at all. Do what’s best for you, starbucks and your partners will miss you but they’ll be fine.
f0rneus 7 points 3y ago
You have no responsibility to support a giant company that ultimately doesn’t care about you. Yes individuals (I.e. coworkers, managers) might be sad or upset you’re leaving, but ultimately SB is constantly hiring and training bc of this very reason. Have fun at your new better paying job, can’t wait til I get there too 🎉

Nah don’t feel bad. You’re putting in a two week notice and that’s the most polite thing you can do. Never feel bad about leaving Starbucks. They treat all employees like they’re instantly replaceable, and that’s why they have a very high turnover rate.
TheYesExpress 5 points 3y ago
Just remember that Starbucks is *always* going to look out for itself. If you found a job that better suits what you need in your life, you cannot possibly be wrong. Don’t let yourself miss out on a better opportunity for the sake of a company that will replace you within a week.
Goodluck!
Theotar 4 points 3y ago
They pay as little as possible, having high turnover is therefore the cost of that.
MatchingColors 4 points 3y ago
Homie, you are NEVER in the wrong when you put yourself, your life, your sanity, happiness, etc. first.
verkruuze 3 points 3y ago
First, you should always look out for yourself. If not always first, at least with a good degree of regularity. You cant look after others if you don't do good self care.

No corporation will ever give a single fuck about you beyond the store level. Maybe district if you are some legendary superstar.

Your new offer sounds great. What are you waiting for???
burberrybradshaw 3 points 3y ago
They’ll find someone else. It’s Starbucks. I left after they worked me 40+ hours when I was 38 weeks pregnant and they had me closing my kiosk alone and expected me to get on my hands and knees to clean. There’s no reason for you to feel bad or guilty for moving on from it.

You need to look out primarily for yourself. Look at it this way, the company is never going to put you first. Heck, they barely care about your welfare at all. That leaves all the responsibility for your own welfare firmly in your own hands. Yes, you can feel guilty for the people who will be having to handle the fallout, but that is hardly your responsibility. If the company who has the power to makes the changes to better working conditions refuses to make those changes, there is simply nothing in your power that you should be doing, do nothing that puts your own well being in question.

Bruh just leave. I did. Best thing ever. Stand for you because no one else is gonna have your back as much as you got for yourself. Proud of you! Hope everything goes well for you on your new job! :)

You gotta put yourself first

Not your problem. Do what’s best for you. Wherever there’s high turn there’s poor leadership unexposed.
Alefur 2 points 3y ago
You do you. Some of the crew may be upset about it but you have to take the opportunities that come to you if they're what you want or need. It's nothing to feel bad about, and even though you may for a bit, doing what's best for yourself is what each and every person will do at some point or another, many many times.
barista_antifascista 2 points 3y ago
Do what you have to do for you, friend. Starbucks ain't what it used to be, and the Rona ain't helping anything there. I hope the new job is a thousand times better than sbux

Thank you

This isn't the 1800s where you're forced to work for one person and the employee-employer relationship is one of the most important dynamics ever. Starbucks is a multi-billion dollar corporation that doesn't know you and honestly doesn't care any more about their workers than any other huge company. You have no obligations to stay in this job and you shouldn't feel guilty at all for leaving, just like I'm sure you don't look badly upon those other 6 coworkers.
G37_is_numberletter 2 points 3y ago
Do you feel bad when you sign a new lease and worry if someone else is going to rent your old apartment or not? I'd just make sure to give proper notice and continue to be a good partner up until your last day.
cheven20 2 points 3y ago
Don’t ever feel like your doing something wrong when you find a better opportunity for yourself in your career or job. At the end of the day the company will be fine and even though you can be loyal to the bone, they can and will replace you if they want to. It sucks but I’ve been through that a couple of times with only one private business owner that has helped me for being loyal with promotions and friendship and great letters of recommendations.

How can you be wrong for wanting a better paying job? Especially if means you might be properly trained and not forced to handle responsibilities that aren't yours? I totally understand how you feel. I hate being the person that puts someone else in a tight spot. But you have every right to find a new and better job, especially if that is what will make you happy.
subpar-barista 1 points 3y ago
A part of me wants to emphasize that you should move on to better things and not let things hold you back. Another part of me is like, maybe stay to help out until they get another shift bc I had 7 people leave my store. I feel bad for the two shifts left but I also understand why the other 7 left.
No you’re not wrong, you’re human with feelings.
Urathis 1 points 3y ago
Honestly the shift supervisor thing is what I aim for just to make my resume look all the better. We just got slapped with reduced hours and while I like to believe we have been having awesome sales we are left in the dark more than I’d like to admit. Congrats on the job offer and the promotion though and hope the new job works out well!
Simplyroro 1 points 3y ago
Shifts should technically have fairly open availability.... in my store all the shifts can close and all can open, not every single day but we all can work every day part. It eliminates the stigma of opener and closer.... ensures we all know how to set each other up and the consequences of leaving a shit close or shit open.

Good luck to you and do NOT FEEL BAD! our company does not pay a living wage its their own fault if they can't keep good workers.
seafoamislander 1 points 3y ago
Please do it. It's a whole business and you (like literally everyone else, your government officials, etc) are replaceable.

Happy for you and be happy for yourself!
WildcardBuffalo 1 points 3y ago
Don't feel bad in the slightest. If the store closing is entirely dependent upon you, then you should be making a manager's salary since you're the one putting in more work than they are. Take the new job! Best of luck to ya.
