Help for partners with ADHD? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by kellseyrae
I was hired back in December 2019, and I love my job. I was off to a good start, but after about 2 months my progress started to plateau. Then I was diagnosed with ADHD, with most of my work problems stemming from difficulty regulating attention, lateness/time management, and forgetting aspects of recipes/task. My team and manager have been supportive, but with the added stress of Covid-19 regulations and reduced hours everything has intensified and my manager informed me that I am not where she needs me to be and that I am slowing down my team rather than helping. I am really trying hard, but it seems like it has not been enough. I have made an appointment with a therapist that has experience working with ADHD, and I’m hopeful. Are there any partners with ADHD that can share tips or resources that may help? I’m desperate at this point. Thank you!

For me I use timers on my phone for everything. I use it to time my breaks, how long a task should take me (usually 15-30 min) and when to begin tasks. Having an alarm for when you have to get ready for work and when you have to leave the house is also really helpful. I also asked my manager to have me on a set schedule when I was first starting so I had a routine to follow. Like if I went in at 5pm everyday I worked then I knew exactly what to do and what time things needed to be done for closing. As for the routines and recipes, take pictures and notes of everything. When you get a new recipe card on the IPad snap a picture of it to study, have a small notebook in your back pocket to write down procedures so you can study those too. There’s also giant binders in the back by most manager desks that have all store procedures in them. There’s a cream colored one that’s particularly helpful for cleaning equipment properly without breaking i it that I referred to a lot. The only down side to all this is you might struggle with the organization.

I know things have been super stressful lately but I really hope this helps in someway.

One thing that helps me because I can't ever remember how many pumps or shots go into a drink, i made up a little chart and write it on my hand. Super frustrating bc one shift treats me like I'm an idiot and is constantly sitting me down to go over it. My manager has no problem with it. I'm currently trying to figure out what kind of accommodations i can get for my adhd. My other biggest issues are just getting overstimulated or frustrated easily and my hearing can't focus when I'm doing DTO so I can't understand customers at all but that same shift sees that as "me not being confident enough on DTO and just need more practice" and puts me on it for my whole shift which usually results in meltdowns in the back. Hate being viewed as dumb or not able to do it instead of that i have a disability and need adjustments

I get the same thing with DTO. When it's a slow night (rarely happens on dto as I work at a high volume store but sometimes I'm lucky) I do fine because I can focus on one order but when there is a line, I panic. I cant put the drinks in order and take an order AND remember what the person said whenever I can actually understand what they're saying. My coworkers are supportive and help me but I have had one get pretty irritated and call me out on it. I'm not sure what to do on this issue either. I'm trying but sometimes it doesnt feel good enough to just "try." So I always discourage myself about it. I do way better at window lol.

I'm a green bean and have adhd (inattentive type) as well. Honestly I was just upfront with my trainer and manager (who I also learned has adhd!) And they were both super sweet and understanding. While I let people I work with know, I still get discouraged with myself. My biggest problem is my memory. Adhd causes me to forget things extremely quickly and my time management with pumping things out fast is hard to do because of my lack of energy.

Honestly the best thing that has helped me is just letting my co workers know that I am trying and to please be patient with me. When I go home I study Starbucks recipe quizlets so that I can keep repeating it to get it to stick. I even have my boyfriend quiz me sometimes!

Best of luck, fellow adhd barista! We got this and we can do this. We just have to learn that while we ask others to be patient with us, that we are patient with ourselves as well!

Edit: my apron is filled with notes as well. I made a simple flashcard for hot bar pumps and shots that I can quickly pull out and look at. And then I have notes of recipes for when I completely forget one!
