What to do about a hypocritical manager? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Konannos
I have a manager who's fairly new who's an outside hire entirely. She keeps forcing her standards and her ways of doing things onto us while restricting growth for baristas. For ex. we're not even allowed to do refunds even if we know how to. Another thing is she doesn't even follow the standards most of the time; even the most basic ones such as wearing a hat on the floor. It's high key driving me insane and it's not as though I haven't tried approaching her at all about it but she continues to be unchanged by even a millimeter.

I think the refund thing is more about monitoring theft or keeping baristas from accepting returns for things without a receipt more than it is about restricting growth.

Wearing a hat on the floor is a standard? It’s a choice in my district haha

That's a health code thing per district. We can't be on the floor without a hat by state law in Louisiana.

health code varies because it's usually regulated at the local level. Hats are only required if local health code requires it.

My advice would be to go to the District Manager, you should have access to their contact information. If she is violating health code that's a huge deal. Also things like not allowing people to do things like ring up refunds if they already know how to sounds controlling, evidence of a toxic coworker. Document more examples of behavior like that, that dishearten the workers or make them unhappy.

The refund thing is more of the keeping track of theft/money than being controlling. Refunds should be done by a shift or approved by a shift first. That way managements can keep track of it and know the exact reason for a refund.

We don't make a big deal about doing refunds at our store, but they are honestly a blue moon sort of thing. Most people are happy with a remake and upgrade. My barista's do tell me when there is a refund, but I don't take note of it anywhere or manage to remember to tell my SM most of the time. I only take note of some confusion if I think it will put the till off and then I record that...So I guess it can very much be a localized sort of thing, because what you pointed out does make good sense.
