SM Responsibility (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by rememberthegreatwar
What exactly is the SM responsibility for getting shifts covered?

When we have more than 24 hours notice of a call-out for a 1045-6 pre-closing shift, and the only thing the SM does is ask the group chat if anyone wants extra hours, does not the responsibility for making sure the baristas on shift aren't left in the lurch fall to the SM? His assurance that "we won't be busy" notwithstanding (as though he would know!), does not an SM assume responsibility for staffing his store, and not screwing over the baristas in the event of sickness, or a rush of Karens and Frappuccinos?!

Your manager isn’t required to come in and cover the shifts of baristas that call out, if that’s what you’re asking.

I don't mean that's he might be required, just that he might do something more than the absolute minimum to help.

In the example you have, the partner gave over 24 hour notice, which means they should have done their due diligence in asking their coworkers to cover for them. Your manager is going to assume they’ve at least done that much, in which case there’s not much more they can do then reiterate that help is needed to cover the shortage.

Especially right now, it’s unrealistic to expect your manager to look outside your store for coverage to avoid potential cross contamination between multiple stores.

The SM is responsible for creating the schedule.

If someone calls out sick the responsibility falls to the SM.

If it's just a matter of being short a barista, the SM has the option of letting you be short staffed, delegating to the SSV to decide if they want to try to find coverage, finding someone else, or coming in themselves.

There are sometimes labor laws that limit how the SM can put out a request for someone to come. In NYC if they ask a specific person to come in then they have to pay an extra bonus to them, but if it's a generic call then they don't have to payout that bonus.

It depends on where you live/work. My state has a sick law that protects the worker and puts the responsibility to find coverage on the people at work. I’m a closing shift and had to answer a call out for an opening barista. Guess what? I had to find the coverage. I mean, the manager should be informed and so should whoever is the opening shift but it’s not the responsibility of the person calling out sick. Not anymore at least. I don’t k on how it is in some other states but at least in Oregon that’s the law.

Edit: typo

I know our manager reaches out to managers in the district to try to find coverage from other stores. Or they will ask someone to come in early, leave late, etc to cover as much of the shift as possible. Often it’s unsuccessful and we work short staffed.

If partner called out with more than 24 hour notice, it’s on that partner to find coverage.
