Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

My ssv told me that my entire shift was being removed 40 minutes before I was scheduled to clock on, is that legal? (self.starbucksbaristas)

I get profits are lower and hours are lower because of that, but this feels ridiculous. I can guarantee that I wasn’t given a 24 or even a 12 hour notice, nor was the SBUXPartnerHrs app updated beforehand. If the paper schedule was altered, I wasn’t given any communication.

what state are you in? some states say you need 24 hour notice

CA, LA County

It looks like in CA they can do that :/ I’d still call PCC and ask though

You can come work in my store, we constantly have call outs and hours available but nobody in the area wants to take them. 😭😭😭

If you showed up for work and they cut your shift, you’d be entitled to half of your scheduled hours. I believe they only need to give you a “reasonable” amount of time to let you know you’re not needed, which would be your start time less the average commuting time. Since not many people should be commuting 40 minutes to work as a barista, I would argue they’re within a reasonable time.

I commute 45 minutes to work and I have 5+ other partners at my store as well as our SM that makes a similar commute 🤷🏼‍♀️

Then I would argue that 40 minutes isn’t reasonable for you.

I don’t think so. I don’t know if it’s state specific but I believe you are guaranteed your scheduled hours unless you agree to take an hour cut

It’s state specific. OP is in CA and In CA they can cancel your shift on short notice. If latter were to show up and clock in and few min later they told OP to leave because they don’t need them, OP would be entitled for 2 hours of pay I believe.

In most states and cities it's legal. Most locations do not have legal protections for the store to honor a posted schedule. It's a violation of starbucks policy which you can take up with PRC.
