I don't know what managers need to hear this but....(self.starbucksbaristas)

DON'T SCHEDULE YOURSELF FOR COVERAGE in an all day 4 person play when the store right up the road has the covid and shut down. We know your asses don't actually work on the floor. It's not cool to leave 3 people on the floor when a 5 person play would be optimum then wonder why there were no breaks, lunches, prep, dishes, stocking, sanitizing done. When did you expect this to happen Karen? OK cool, now you are leaving early? Great. Have a fantastic fu@&ing day.

Hey, gotta make a quick call to the DM. Hey, gotta run up to Staples for a label maker. Hey, gotta check my email about block schedules. Hey, gotta start writing the next schedule. Hey, gotta send a few texts about coverage. Hey, gotta call around and find coffee base.

Did we work together today? Did you yell f*** the siren as we left?

My new manager at our store worked from 10am - 6pm the same shift I was scheduled she worked along side all of us. The only time she left was to do the tips...amd take a call other then that she was right back out there with us. I honestly have never felt more relief then having her around. And alos she was supportive.. I was on DT and it got sooo crazy and one point I kept my cool and continued to do my best after we were done she paused said okay everyone take a breath and all of you dod a good job..and then complimented us individually. She said I was doing amazing by keeping the guests happy while waiting and interacting and learning 3 new regulars and there drinks...which i didnt think she would notice...we were all doing pretty even the petty bitchy partners who have been the bane of my existence have even started to become nicer.. Im so sorry that your SM is being shitty.. but not all SM are bad.. I couldnt love mine more.
shizgettingworse [OP]15 points3y ago
Also, SM shouldn't be doing tips. Big no no.
Gothicpsycho161 points2y ago
( im sorry im still green around the edges....just pasted my 1st year mark... ) why cant store managers do the tips?
shizgettingworse [OP]1 points2y ago
Store managers should not ever be touching the tips because they do not belong to them. Only a barista or a shift supervisor should be doing the tips. In a perfect world a different person does them every week to keep it honest.
Gothicpsycho161 points2y ago
Ah....I see..thank you for taking the time to explain that to me... I didnt mean tips as in giving everyone there tips but like collecting them all and putting them in the safe thingy but she also did her "store walk" at the same....is that not good or do you mean just splitting the tips into the bags for everyone...
shizgettingworse [OP]6 points3y ago
Internal promotion or external hire?

She was on maternity leave from somewhere else and my manager was leaving to get another store closer to home we had a temporary manager and then her...shes so amazing!..

I’m confused, don’t schedule yourself and work on the floor when you need more people on the floor? Not all managers are created equal. Honestly I’d rather be on the floor 40 hours a week rather than having to do manager stuff.

My manager will work on the floor a maximum of 2 hours per day. Which means if they schedule themselves as "coverage" we are down a person from 830am when they decide to disappear until 3 when they are scheduled to leave. This time they just left at 1, without even saying anything. The opening shift supervisor was scheduled to leave at 1 with no mid. This would leave 2 baristas alone and in a 2 partner play until 3 when the next group came in. After drowning through a 2 partner play most of the day in attempts to at least run lunches while the manager did God knows what. If called for help in desperation they would ring maybe 1 customer on front then wander off. Past the line of food items in need of prep, past the sink of dishes, around the overflowing trash while shouting over their shoulder to have someone wipe down the lobby.
Trust me the baristas here understand exactly what I am saying. Managers DO NOT WORK AS COVERAGE so the days where they are scheduled are a disaster to plan and execute.
Also you seem to be a store manager. Our slowest 30 minute period of the day was 25 customers. With 2/3 partners. In a drive thru that also has a cafe open for sit down. We definitely could have used the tiniest bit of support. But, you know, that schedule for the week of the 27th ain't gonna write itself! Certainly not during the 18 hours of non coverage time that they typically just do from home.
This is not unique to my store.

I’m glad you’re familiar with half hour transactions. Take your busiest 4 half hours in a row, that’s how to calculate partners. It should be one more partner than the 10s. So if 4 half hours in a row you have 20-29 it’s 3, 30-39 it’s 4 partners, 40-49 it’s 5. There a little more involved but that’s a good starting point. Managers typically should be expected 8 hours of non coverage and 32 of coverage a week. The only justification I could see of more non coverage is freeing up coverage for partners who need hours, but that doesn’t sound like the case. I’d encourage you to contact PRSC if you suspect time theft. Please don’t group all of us together though, your experience with your manager or managers in your district is not indicative of all managers out there.

I've worked a with 10 managers in 4 states over the past 14 years. 2 good managers out of the lot, neither were external hires and one was promoted and moved to another state to take a district. I'm very familiar with the scheduling thanks. I know how to calculate partners and breaks. Are you that condescending to your shift team? We had 2 people on the floor for those 25 customers, because lunches are required. The surrounding half hours had 30+ customers and during peak, which is i think what you were trying to refer to when you said to take the 4 busiest half hours, which were 39,41,49,43. With a 4 partner play. My point, which you are missing, is the 4th person was on their phone in the back doing "manager stuff."

Hey, can you support me stepping off the floor for a few hours? I gotta play on my phone, but I will hurry and look at the laptop screen if you round the corner to stock lids. Then I'll let you know how grateful I am that you let me get this suuuper important action done (that doesn't sound important, time sensitive, or like it should take longer than 15 minutes) while you walk away.
