Advice on becoming a Shift Supervisor (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by MemesandSpeech
So I have been working for SB for almost a year and throughout that year I have heard nothing but good stuff about me. How I interact with customers, take charge on what to mark unavailable / handle complaints, having less voids / errors, etc. And hearing all this stuff about me, I feel like I should try to step up to SS since it seems like I know what I'm doing. (When in reality I am just doing my best to help my partners & store as good as I can.)

With that being said, any advice on becoming a Shift Supervisor? Anything important that I should know about that position and the works of it? One thing I do know is that I need to study up on drink recipes (I often forget how many pumps / shots most drinks need) but besides that, I think I got everything else down.

Any advice, tips, anything is much appreciated. Thank you!

Major skills you need is time management, situational awareness and adaptability. As long as your shifts and manager consider you a strong barista, try talking up how you like customer connecting and stuff like that.

Don’t get to comfortable as a supervisor. I was demoted not based on my work performance, but because the store wasn’t making enough money. I was never written up, only called out twice in two years and was constantly praised by management. I’ve learned to not try TOO hard. Just do what’s asked of you and nothing beyond that.

$1 is a very helpful chart you can tape to one of the espresso machines. I had one like that when I was training and it really helped me visualize it in an organized manner. I think it got taken down when we closed for COVID and were deep cleaning the store and I miss it.
