Things you wish you knew as a green bean?(self.starbucksbaristas)

I get the privilege to train starting in 2 days! Yay! What’s something you wish your trainer told you when you started? Go!

i wish my trainer taught me how to disassemble and reassemble the pumps, they also never told me how to make an espresso macchiato or double shot on ice

I still don't know how to make an espresso macchiato 030) Double shots get ordered enough that I had to learn.

When I train green beans, the things I focus on are the things that they won’t be doing as often as actually making drinks. Things like correctly disassembling pumps, making kegs, the whole CS role. Stuff like that. When I first started, my trainer skimmed through that stuff and focused heavily on bar training. Obviously that’s important, but the CS cycle is something that took me FOREVER to understand because we just went over it like once.

Totally agree, im a week into being a barista after training and it’s not the drinks that confuse me (if I really don’t know a recipe someone will just tell me and then I’m good from there) it’s all that OTHER stuff ESPECIALLY CS!! stuff like dishes, what gets cleaned during close, what to do if it’s not busy, where stuff is in BOH, etc

I’ve noticed that green beans (within the last year) don’t know that Matcha Frapp gets classic. Also, if you are activating 10 gift cards with the same $ amount, you can do it faster by clicking “quantity” then activate, and just slide/scab cards one after another.

lmao I found out a matcha frapp gets classic two months in..

One of the things I like to do is make my green beans super familiar with the back computer. Partner Hub is a great resource if people know how to use it, and it’s surprising how much of that gets skipped when it’s really important for people to be familiar with it.

I wish my trainer had discussed the CS cycle a bit more, it took me a while to learn that.
Another thing that is more specific - when I first started training on bar, I found sequencing very difficult .... until my supervisor mentioned something about “replacing like with like” .... so once the milk for one drink is done steaming, start steaming your milk for the next drink right away. Once the shots for one drink are done, start pulling the shots for your next drink right away, that kind of thing.
idk if that’s the best explanation but hope it helps a bit!

This just blew my mind and made me understand sequencing so much better.

I’m glad it helped! It’s definitely one of the most useful pieces of advice I’ve received in bar training.

Honestly, I wish someone taught me an efficient way to do disruptives as well as a good way to deal with CS when it's busy as a mf in this joint
