Venti Rant no.3 in E minor (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by yellowhearted
Hi y’all, me again :)

This rant concerns a regular patron at my store. I will call him George. He’s an older white man who’s pretty conservative and likes to cause problems as often as possible - every time he comes in, he has an issue with how his drink was made (pike with whip on top) or with one of our partners. He makes a big fuss and usually ends up stomping out of the store.

When my California location opened on May 4th, wearing a face mask was optional, though many of our customers would wear one anyway. At this time, George would order while wearing a mask.
But now that CA law requires everyone to wear a mask, George has taken issue with it and refuses to wear one anymore!

The first day the mask order was put in to effect at my store, my SM tried to explain why George needed to wear a mask, and to either put one on, or order at the door.
He waves his hand at her and ignores her, continuing to order his items.

My boss wasn’t refusing service to him... she just said we’d help him outside... but he complained and argued about his “rights as a citizen”, and asked for our DM’s contact. Eventually a policeman who my boss knows had to act as the mediator to settle the argument outside.

Later that day, George called our DM seven times!! And threatened to sue for harassment.

The following day, after George’s pro-Trump, anti-mask tirade, partners at my location were told to serve him at the door.
That entails the partner on POS going to the door, taking his order, taking his card, reloading his card and giving it back to him. THEN we are forced to DELIVER the entire tray of drinks and food items to this entitled man baby when the order is complete!!! George comes in approximately 3 times a day, and will complain if service is not prompt enough.

I don’t see how this is fair or okay. George has been coughing outside lately when we take his order and it’s really freaking me out. I also don’t think it’s okay for us to enable this man, because he’s still getting what he wants, and we have to service him. He’s rude to all of us, he touches our hands when we give him his items and he causes the same issues in the neighboring stores in our complex.

Thanks for hearing this one. He comes in every day and acts like we owe him because he gives us $5.40 for his items. Big fucking deal.

Anyways. Thanks for hearing me ✌🏼

George is an ass. I hate ppl.

My sm told us today that starting (xyz date, couldn't hear this part over ambient cafe noises lol) that sbux is giving us permission to actually refuse service for non mask compliant customers. So, maybe there's hope on the horizon??

Sorry your store has a George. He an ass.

My SM doesn’t want to refuse service, though we do reserve the right to. She’s afraid that our store will end up on the news and be “cancelled” lol. Her words, not mine.
Thank you for the encouragement. There are a few George’s and Karen’s in my community and they are all exhausting. It just makes it hard to come to work.

Yeah, now that I'm scrolling on the rest of this and sbuc subs, I'm wondering if my sm interpretation is correct? I didn't actually read the update yet. Bcs y'all are already sending him out and taking his order, which I agree: he is still getting what he wants, at y'all's expense. Ugh.

It just encouraging the culture of “I’m the customer and I can treat minimum wage workers like shit and still get what I want”.
It’s perpetuating an entitled and delusional mindset. Honestly, this is how assholes are created, and how they evolve.

How is this guy not banned he’s causing more trouble than it’s worth to keep putting up with him
yellowhearted [OP] 7 points 3y ago
My SM doesn’t want to ban people because we may get “cancelled” and boycotted. She kinda forces us to put up with bullshit because she doesn’t want negative repercussions against her. But it’s totally ok that her baristas have to deal with his behavior though hahahaha

While I don’t have a lot of overall advice, I would talk to your manager about the possibility of setting a table outside you front door so you can place unmasked customer orders on it. Just because George doesn’t want to act correctly doesn’t mean that you or any of your coworkers should have to come onto direct contact with him, especially while he refuses to wear a mask.

this honestly makes me so fucking mad. if you can say "no shirt, no shoes, no service," purely for propriety's sake, then why can't you say "no mask, no service" for the safety of your patrons and employees? tbh if i were an SM i would be way more concerned with my employees' safety and morale than with upsetting someone who obviously already looks down on starbucks and starbucks employees. like there are legit so many (usually old white men tbh) who look down on us as some fru fru liberal mochachoca frappachappa nonsense and say all this condescending shit right to our face and then go and spend their own money here and then whine about the price. and now they have something else to whine about and victimize themselves over and make a big scene about because their lives are fucking boring and empty and the management allows it because they don't want to lose a customer or whatever. but customers come and go all the time, it's the employees that really keep this nonsense chugging along.
