ICED! YOU WANTED YOUR DRINK ICED, SAY YOU WANT IT ICED! Why do people assume that because it’s summer, our default has switched to iced. It has not and never has. I’m throwing away WAY too many drinks because Bob wants a latte but is too careless to mention he wants that iced.
lettersfromowls107 points3y ago
Don't forget the part where they act like you're the idiot for thinking they'd want a hot drink during the summer. That's a response I used to get all the time.
Like, I don't know your life, dude. Maybe you work in an office that blasts AC all day. Maybe you just like your coffee hot. Don't give me an attitude because YOU didn't specify what you wanted!
luyuun101 points3y ago
it’s always the caramel macchiato too
43richierich4318 points3y ago
Ikr!! Ugh. I've actually started trying to verify from people before they order caramel macchiato if they want it iced or not and dang 90% of the time they always want it iced but never say it before.
VectoredClarinet1 points3y ago
I feel this on a spiritual level
molecularcoffee2 points3y ago
Or the white mocha
zooweemama5590 points3y ago
Ugh I feel this. I just as everyone now. As much as it pains me to ask "hot or iced" 567 times a day, it pains me more to remake a drink because no one clarified.
eat-reddit-tv5 points3y ago
Same! It’s always easiest to confirm the order at the POS
LittleEagle1559 points3y ago
I just repeat back "hot" when I read back the drink. Most of them correct it and/or apologize, and once in a while I get someone who sounds deeply offended that I couldn't read their mind.
I'm good either way 🙃
Assiqtaq30 points3y ago
And people get irritated if you ask. Of course you wanted iced, sure sure. But Frank down there wanted hot *even though* it is 100 degrees outside, and standard is hot Alice. So I'm going to assume hot UNLESS YOU SAY DIFFERENT!
I'm also getting a bit irritated at people thinking you are saying "what" when I ask "hot?" even though I KNOW I should be saying "is that hot or iced?" After ordering your drink 100s of times you should be AWARE I need to know that.
MonstrousGiggling6 points3y ago
Yo same with whip and non dairy, they'll be like "WHY WOULD I WANT WHIP I ORDERED NON DAIRY" and its like bruh, the last 5 people before you wanted extra whip on their non dairy bullshit, like everyone isn't you.
VectoredClarinet6 points3y ago
I have been asking “that’s hot, correct?” when they don’t specify. This way I get the info I need while reinforcing/teaching customers that our standard is hot.
snaileywhaley5 points3y ago
Yeah, I’d always say, “okay, I have you down for a venti hot caramel macchiato.” Then when they say, “no, iced.” I’d say, “oh, caramel macchiatos are hot. So you wanted an iced caramel macchiato?”
VectoredClarinet2 points3y ago
Exactly! Gotta reinforce the behavior that we want to see from customers.
eat-reddit-tv1 points3y ago
I gesture to the windows and talk about the summer weather if they seem confused my my question. Most people realize I’m just being helpful
wonderess22120 points3y ago
i typically ask people if they want their espresso drink hot or iced. it’s gotten rid of quite a bit of the waste but there are still people who decide to change their mind before they get their drink and magically “i said that was supposed to be iced” when they said hot.. idk
MariasGalactic16 points3y ago
The worse is when they suddenly decide they ordered a different size too. Like, I’m sorry you want a venti iced caramel macchiato with extra extra caramel drizzle, but you said tall and hot.
Urathis16 points3y ago
I’m right there with you. It’s become second nature to ask if they want it iced. They either act annoyed because obviously it’s supposed to be hot or obviously it should be iced because it’s summer. No winning either way.
Kaywin7 points3y ago
I never understood people getting pissy when the barista asks clarifying questions. I once had a person come through my DT ordering some sort of unusual espresso drink, I don't remember exactly what. But she got SO snippy with me when I asked if she wanted it hot or iced. "NO. I want it HOT. OBVIOUSLY. I didn't SAY iced." In my best customer service voice, I explained that we wanted to make sure we were making the drink the way she wanted. But it was still an unusual drink, so my SM (who'd been listening in) took it upon herself to double-check at the window that she wanted the drink made the way I'd rung it up. You'd think that we'd taken a shit on this woman's front doorstep. She got super angry and started berating my SM. "I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY YOU ALL ASK SO MANY QUESTIONS." Geez, maybe y'all should mobile order if you hate human interaction that much. Or better yet, make your own damn coffee at home, where you don't have to talk to anyone.
honeydreamgirl11 points3y ago
CEO of making an iced cloud even when the tag says hot
sunshine45511 points3y ago
I always ask hot or iced many many times until they give me an answer. I'd rather annoy them and get their drink right than have them get annoyed at me for assuming and spoiling them thinking we can read their minds. We do not condone bad behavior.
burberrybradshaw10 points3y ago
I alwaaaays ask if people want their machiattos hot or iced because 99 percent of the time it’s iced. People just think we are mind readers
sizzlethizzle8 points3y ago
I learned to *always* ask if they want it iced but even then I’ll have people order it iced, then say they “meant” hot

charlenebean3 points3y ago
🤬🤬🤬
mudpuppy2457 points3y ago
I always ask if they want it hot or iced, as well as if they want the sweetener or whipped cream that comes standard.
aimsthename886 points3y ago
I know standard is to not ask questions when someone orders a drink, but I always ask Hot or Iced because it saves us time, especially mid rush. If I’m on bar and I think a hot drink is supposed to be iced, I’ll call out the customer’s name and double check just in case - and majority of the time it’s supposed to be iced. I know it’s not standard, but we’re usually super busy and I don’t want to get behind because Suzy meant for her drink to be iced and we never asked.
Kaywin1 points3y ago
>I know standard is to not ask questions when someone orders a drink,
Huh? I've never heard this before, and was trained exactly the opposite.
aimsthename881 points3y ago
I believe it’s supposed to “save time” if we just put in exactly what the customer ordered and not ask any questions.
charlenebean6 points3y ago
I hate when I ask “hot or iced” and they reply “what?” Like what do you think I’m asking!!! Plus the sizes too, customers never specify 😤
hellopie76 points3y ago
I have to idiot proof my customers by asking "cool, now would you like that hot or iced?" Which I think will annoy regulars I'm not familiar with.(high traffic store) But it must be done with how often it happens.
hopelovepeace336 points3y ago
I work at a store in Florida & I’ve gotten to the point where I ask for every drink that normally comes hot if the customer wants it hot or iced. Like you I was having to toss to many drinks because Becky didn’t remember she wanted her latte iced. I still get those asshole customers who will get to the window after I’ve checked with them while ordering saying that they wanted to drink iced & it’s like WTF DO YOU NOT LISTEN TO ME WHEN IM TALKING TO YOU! So I’d say your best bet is to start asking asking the customer if they want the drink hot or iced, I know it’s annoying but once you do it it will become apart of the routine in taking an order. Obviously your still going to get those people who whisper or will say ohhh I wanted it ice but it will cut back on the drinks that you’ve got to dump out.
One_Hundred_X4 points3y ago
Maybe there should be a Sign somehow stating along the lines of Ice only by request, or let Customers ice their own Drinks.
Gucci031311 points3y ago
People don’t read most signs. We have a ton in our store regarding where to stand and wait. In store vs. mobile, like herding cats 🐈😂
One_Hundred_X6 points3y ago
Well it'd be as if they didn't read the Menu board either
Kaywin3 points3y ago
If this rotten pandemic has taught me anything, it's that customers are either incapable or unwilling to read.
One_Hundred_X1 points3y ago
So no-one reads, no-one can't ice their own drinks, no-one is capable of anything. Management must be the enforcers.
snidejenner1 points3y ago
Well a hot latte cannot just be "iced" by a customer themselves....
One_Hundred_X1 points3y ago
so then seek 1st option
infinitypluspi3 points3y ago
On the flip side, my barista made my mom an iced caramel macchiato instead of the hot that I ordered on two separate visits yesterday. It was kind of comical. They offered me the iced mistake one the second time, so at least it didn’t go to waste.
MrBeetSoda2 points3y ago
I don’t know why its hard to confirm a drink though? Sure blame the customer all you want but if the person on register is not asking and confirming drinks again you’re gonna waste time.
This will literally even cut down on assholes that want free drinks, “cause it was made wrong” “well you and i confirmed it three times before you came to the window Judy, now you look stupid”
AndrewtheRey1 points3y ago
I literally had a customer the other day say to the DTO girl “my car says 87 degrees why would I want a hot drink”. Thankfully she had a response for him
stonerscout4551 points3y ago
my SM was on DTO yesterday and i had to remake so many caramel macchiatos bc he wouldn’t clarify. JUST ASK
snidejenner1 points3y ago
I remember one time a couple came through drive to pick up their moble orders. We handed them their drinks and the woman goes "these are supposed to be iced" we just stared at her.
Ma'am. You ordered these yourself.
MonstrousGiggling1 points3y ago
I mean it should be habit for you at this point to clearly ask, would you like that hot or cold? Obviously some customers will still fuck up though.
But tbh idc if I'm being annoying by repeatedly asking, hot or iced until I get a 100% confirmation, I'm not looking to waste animal product or any food product.
EggoDeath6661 points3y ago
I’m not sure why but I’ve always asked if customers want their drinks hot or iced. I wasn’t really trained to but most people at my Tarbucks do it. I guess it’s prevented a lottt of thrown away drinks.
rszdemon1 points3y ago
I will ALWAYS ask hot or iced.
I always say because I'm not psychic
goplur1 points3y ago
Yeah I always asked iced or hot now
NOTcreative-0 points3y ago
It’s simple, we need to anticipate customer needs. People are creatures of habit, all of us. If we’re used to ordering a hot drink because of winter we will continue to do so. Barista taking orders just needs to ask “hot or iced?” And the problem is solved. If a customer forgets and we remake it for them, the habit persists. If we catch them at the ordering stage and ask for clarification they’re more likely to learn.
CuriousPersonGuy-45 points3y ago
You supposed to ask hot or iced
pillsburypothead42 points3y ago
I was trained that drinks traditionally hot are still hot unless they tell you otherwise. So I agree with OP- specify iced, especially when it’s busy.
I read an order back 3 times today, & they STILL claimed they specified iced. I was like, HONESTLY what the fuck
LeBran_James15 [OP]23 points3y ago
That’s exactly right. It’s supposed to be assumed hot unless specified otherwise. And YES you can say ICED latte 3 times with them confirming all three times, and once they get to the window they’ll say it’s wrong
CuriousPersonGuy-28 points3y ago
Only if they’re retarded. I find clarifying prior helps to avoid confusion. You’re only making it harder for yourself by not asking.
_Pulltab_13 points3y ago
Hey there! Please don’t use that word to describe people. It’s offensive and unnecessary. ✌🏼
snidejenner1 points3y ago
Do you even work at Starbucks??
pleasesurpriseme3 points3y ago
I was fuming during happy hour last time because someone ordered a few lattes the same way and I asked hot or iced and they specified hot. I was having a hard time hearing them order from the passenger’s side so I asked, I shit you not, three times if the screen looked correct after small clarifications. They, on camera, eyeballed the area where the order is and said yes. They got to the window and said “two were supposed to be iced” MOTHERFUCKER-
potterlyfe2 points3y ago
Standard is not to ask. Just like You don’t ask if they want their ice coffee sweetened. You only make it harder for other baristas who follow standard dealing with customers saying ‘well the other store always asks me.’
_Pulltab_10 points3y ago
Regardless of what’s standard, it makes MY life easier just to ask. “Is that hot or ice today?” “That normally comes sweetened, is that ok?” It’s also standard to not batch blend Frappuccino’s, too, but... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
potterlyfe2 points3y ago
Well it’s nice that it makes your life easier but that’s how you become ‘the other’ Starbucks. Not easy for other partners when those customers go to different stores and expect their hand to be held while they order.
CuriousPersonGuy0 points3y ago
Cool. Have fun remaking drinks then.
potterlyfe1 points3y ago
I don’t remake a lot of drinks. Once you set the standard, most customers fall in line.
