Too many of you are negative about a company that does so much for you.(self.starbucksbaristas)

You are so blessed to be speaking from this standpoint. Some people’s livelihood balances on exposing themselves to a pandemic or being homeless. Let them express their frustrations while you be grateful you can benefit from a situation and don’t call out others for having a different experience.
jchbegg21 points3y ago
There's no such thing as unskilled labor; you sound like my dad.
Being able to view this from your point is a privilege and other people are in worse financial situations than you. A lot of us have to work more than one job just to pay the bills bc minimum wage is so low. I don't have a choice but to work 60-80 hours a week between two jobs and I'm not even going to school.
Corporations, as a part of capitalism, are evil, and no, they dont *need* to be making money if that money comes at the expense of putting employees in harm's way. A corporation that can't survive this pandemic without exploiting us doesn't deserve to survive.
Grow up. The Siren doesn't need you to suckle at her breast like she's God's gift to earth; she doesnt care about any of us. Hopefully they actually teach something at ASU.
mykotman12-10 points3y ago
Starbucks is not responsible for min wage. Starbucks pays according to the min wage. The reason why barista job is min wage is because it requires no skill, education, or experience to get (therefore it’s called unskilled labor). If you want to get paid more, you gotta fight the government to raise min wage.
Are you against capitalism? Are there other systems you wish this country had?
rabbitmom199917 points3y ago
“are you against capitalism” yes lmao
Blackout624 points3y ago
Mood.
Siren's loaded. They could comp me for the rest of the year and I could still probably make that back in profit to them once I'm back in under six months and while still getting paid at my last regular rate.
And don't even get me started on how capitalism has failed me even though under just about every lie told about it I should have been able to succeed.
mykotman12-3 points3y ago
So what system do you propose we use?
rabbitmom19992 points3y ago
well if you must know i am an anarcho-socialist. but just so you know I am not going to get in a debate about capitalism on the Starbucks subreddit lmao
TheBlueSuperNova19 points3y ago
They are a corporation, but making money over people’s lives is never okay, no matter what organization you are. And let’s not act like they’re bleeding money, they’re just worried about not beating last years profits
meezy9216 points3y ago
Every barista is entitled to feel how they want to feel about their job because all our experiences are relative.
Just bc we’re provided with opportunities and a job doesn’t mean we should praise the company for doing what any other decent big corporation should be doing.

The cool thing about being a human is that you can choose to be empathetic. Other people have different experiences than you, and this is their safe space to vent.
cfuqua-1 points3y ago
make no mistake, a public internet forum is not a "safe space"
[deleted] [OP]1 points3y ago
You’re so insightful

Thanks

I agree insofar as saying other companies are just as bad, if not worse. but that doesn’t mean people aren’t allowed to complain about their working conditions. all the problems people have with Starbucks are a direct result of late-stage capitalistic exploitation of workers, so all the critiques of it as a work environment can function as a critique of the wider system as a whole. this platform can serve as a valuable space for people to critique and analyze their workplace and maybe recognize some of the systematic problems that exist within it by reading others’ experiences. positivity is not an unquestionable virtue; it pays off to call out problems and injustices when you see them.
ihateyousoymatcha8 points3y ago
I agree, there's a lot of negativity on here, but it's not the only thing. A lot of posts are made in humour or something good that happened that day as well, and people asking genuine questions (like drink recipes).
I just focus on those ones and scroll past the complaining 🤗

shut up

This is my favorite comment. Everyone else had genuinely good comments that made me see other perspectives.
Yours is just so silly

So mature of you.

It’s not unskilled though. They train you. And then they do their best to keep you with heath benefits, tuition reimbursement, PTO, sick time, free food & bevs, markouts, etc.. It costs more for them to hire & train someone new who *does not* have the skill.
Anybody can fold shirts at a retail store. There may be training, but it’s minimal compared to Starbucks. It took me 3 months when I first started to finally feel like I was good at the job. Having worked customer service the last 10 years, Starbucks is the most challenging.
That’s really the only qualm I have with your post. I fe pretty kindly towards Starbucks these days after they gave me 2.5 months off with pay. My mom is a healthcare worker, and I don’t know what she would have done without me at her house to help her. I’ve learned and grown a lot with this company. It has its flaws, it could be better, I’m not trying to be complacent— but I am grateful for this job.
jaredperez023 points3y ago
Nah man. With you on this. It’s important to point out where the company lacks (there’s so much I could say). But quite frankly, I’m still glad I’ve got a job, despite this stupid pandemic. That being said, wear a mask, social distance, and let’s be considerate towards others. :)

We're in the middle of a pandemic. Corporate took quite a while to realize that encouraging our customers to flock to Starbucks for happy hour is a bad idea during a pandemic. Especially considering many locations are understaffed as hell.
And speaking of understaffing, most of my shifts have been a mix of training people in the middle of rush hour. I have to teach all these new people how to make drinks while our parking lot is filled with cars.
Ive been promoted to trainer. Its been a month or so. Ive had multiple of these shifts where Im literally training people during the worst times and havent seen a cent for it. Shift supervisors arent supposed to be training people (came out of a SSVs mouth to me) and hes training people right in front of me. Then after he goes over the basics, Im the one that has to actually help them practice. He just goes and does his shift stuff, and still gets to collect the bonus.
I worked for this company about 4 years ago and left for a bit. Now Im back. The only bump in pay is a mere $0.50. Many other companies that arent even overpriced as Starbucks is has raised pay considerably compared to Starbucks.
We have a Store manager who barely knows how to do anything efficiently. She gets overly fucking upset over super small mistakes. Yet shes barely contributed shit to the store's success during the time that Ive been here. Shes mostly sat in the back doing schedules, and then will be on drive thru. Customers actually seem incredibly uncomfortable talking to her. Yet shes the one pushing for customer connection AND drive thru times to be under 45 seconds.
Job isnt that complicated to really warrant high pay, but $9.50 is ridiculous. If Starbucks can afford to throw out a fuckton of food every single day, they can afford to pay us a lot more.

I’m with you. This sub (and the other one) became so negative. It’s interesting to see how so many partners on here say that they gonna quit and go work for a different company that gives them more/better benefits for min wage job but nobody can even name a company that does that.
I don’t think people on here realize that being a barista at Starbucks is min wage job. It requires no skill, no education, and no experience to get therefor it pays min wage.
Companies need to make money to survive and to be able to pay their employees, but so many partners on here think that a company can just shut down all business and still be able to pay people for doing nothing. There are so many partners in this company that even if Starbucks had a magical stack of cash, that stack wouldn’t last very long before company will force to shut down permanently.
mr-potatohead_1 points3y ago
If you dont like it get off the sub 🤷🏼♀️
mykotman12-1 points3y ago
If you don’t like working for Starbucks, quit 🤷♀️
mr-potatohead_3 points3y ago
I'm not the one out here telling my partners what they should and shouldn't say. I'm allowed to both complain about my job and appreciate it.
mykotman12-1 points3y ago
I’ve never said anything about what partners should or shouldn’t say. I simply said that this sub is becoming too negative. You can rant all you want. You can say whatever you want. I don’t care. But I’m also allowed to agree with somebody and share my opinion about what is being said here aka the sub becoming too negative.
